@CJD87 The ability to easily manipulate the framerate and on-screen refresh rate is one of the coolest aspects of the device.

I think the successor will largely be iterative. It's insane to think is the current environment that they'd do anything else tbh.

I'm not sure it'll be a day one at all for me, but if it's reasonably priced and fully backwards-compatible, I'll be a lot more tempted to grab it sooner than later. I have a TON of Switch games to play, so I have no use for a Nintendo device that doesn't allow me to play those until it has a suitably large collection of exclusive games.

My family has had a Switch for years, yet I've never actually played anything on it other than party games like Mario Kart or Mario Party. Thanks to losing access to my PC recently, I felt there was no better time than now to check out some singleplayer Switch exclusives. In the end my decision came down to Xenoblade Chronicles, Bayonetta or Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. I ended up going for that last one. Why didn't I start with Kingdom Battle? Well, partly because I had heard the gameplay of the sequel was improved, but mostly because I couldn't resist getting straight to my favourite Mario character, Rosalina (who upsettingly hasn't yet shown up in the nine-ish hours I've put in so far)!

I had always been casually intrigued by this spin-off franchise, but it's not until recently I looked into it more. You see, I just watched part of a full playthrough by one of my favourite YouTubers of... X-Com 2. Ever since, I've been aching for something to try out that has that turn-based style of combat. Mixing that recent feeling with the want to play something on Switch, this seemed like the perfect candidate all things considered. And so far, I think it has lived up to that expectation.

I've been having a great time with it. Sure, it's fairly easy up until this point. I've cleared three of the big Darkmess puddles you need to get the purified whatever, so I've practically finished 1.5 planet. Maybe the difficulty ramps up from here still, but if I'm honest... I prefer when my gameplay is leaning towards easy with the occasional challenge. I don't need to steamroll anyone or anything, but I don't usually get fun out of getting my ass handed to me and replaying sections. Cuphead was probably the one notable exception on that front and I think the fact that I played it in co-op probably had a lot to do with that. Point being, the difficulty or lack thereof has not been an issue for me in any way. I find it highly satisfying to plan out my approach and watch it all unfold gloriously (or occasionally incredibly stupidly).

I will say I'm a bit overwhelmed by the amount of Sparks available in the game and upgrading them. It just seems like there keeps being more and more of them and I honestly can't keep up with what I have and am getting anymore at this point. I also made it a point to switch out characters constantly on the first planet, but on the second so far I've just been playing an endless Peach + Luigi + Emo Rabbid tag team. I've found those three a very effective pairing. Peach for the protection and short-range, Luigi for the long-range snipes and overwatches and Emo Rabbid for taking out multiple enemies at a time from wherever. I know Emo Rabbid has a name, but I've forgotten it and this is now the codename he's taken up in turn.

I do worry that the planets are filled with a lot of side content. Okay, maybe not that much all things considered since you can clear it in a few hours, but it does essentially just repeat the combat over and over. So far I've not had a problem with that necessarily, but I fear it might start feeling repetitive sooner rather than later. I hope they keep introducing new mechanics and enemy types to keep things fresh and interesting, which I would say has been the case so far. I have the curse of feeling the compulsion to 100% whatever I do in games, so if this takes a turn for the worse it could really affect my enjoyment of the game. I'll just have to force myself to mainline the main content then, I suppose.

Anyone else played this and can either assuage my fears or confirm them?

Tiger Woods 2004 has RetroAchievements support now. RIP my life, already having a blast.

@BeerIsAwesome Have you played the 3DS version of Generations? It’s absolutely brilliant and a different game all round.

@RogerRoger I’ve been playing through 08 on the PS3 but that requires hooking it up to a TV rather than just emulating so it requires more effort! PS3 emulation isn’t quite at the level yet where it’s as scalable as the PS2 so you need a pretty good machine to get it running well.

@RogerRoger My PS3’s definitely starting to die, had some overheating troubles with it so the thermal paste probably needs replacing.

FM24 is yeah, more of the same, but the ability to import 23 save files is fantastic, managed to get the 1998 mod working. Signed Southgate and an 18 year old Robbie Keane for Liverpool, had no idea that they had such a dreadful back line that year. It’s bizarre, Michael Owen is one of the best players in the database, McManaman and Ince are great too but they have such gaping holes too. Steve Staunton is probably the best defender they have but he murdered his wrist so had to bring in Southgate. I do love how it has modern valuations though, fat Ronaldo is worth £300 million!!

@nessisonett I don't know if this will work for you, but when I had overheating problems with my PS3, which led to it shutting down whenever I tried to boot up a game, I lowered the resolution output in the system settings. I used to have it on 1080p but then I lowered it to 720p and now my PS3 doesn't shut down while trying to boot up a game.

@LtSarge That could maybe sort it, it’s bizarrely enough happening way more with early PS3 games which makes me think that the PS3 just had the worst optimised games on the planet!

@nessisonett Try playing Skyrim on it and report back!

@JohnnyShoulder Hahaha, I tried to go into my Skyrim file a couple months back and forgot how insane that port was. It’s obviously what I played first, but I’d say it was a worse experience than me playing it on the Mac through a Wineshell, which was about as silly as you’d expect.

Playing through Dead Space (2023) is just pure bliss for me. I already thought the original was exceptional and the remake is so much better. Improved graphics, better atmosphere, more side content, it's just a fantastic experience altogether. Not to mention that I absolutely love horror games with a fun gameplay loop. This series along with Resident Evil are my favourite horror franchises. They're scary and they're fun to play, it's just horror perfection.

was just playing my old SNES Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars game a half hour ago. old save file still works which is awesome.

had to backtrack from Smithy Factory all the way back to the earlier places mostly Forest Maze to finally go through that maze part to check up on the tree stump secret treasure stash. Had to watch a youtube video for that since the in game's advice is crap

Been a long long time since I played my old Super Mario RPG game.

Started Ratchet and Clank Into The Nexus (I skipped the widely-panned spin-offs). The camera is DIRE. It accelerates which is a baffling decision for a first person shooter. The strafing controls are also much much worse. And the framerate is painful. At least it’s not supposed to be very long. I dunno, it’s just mad to me how much Insomniac dropped the ball in the PS3 era considering how prolific they’ve been since Sunset Overdrive.

@nessisonett into nexus and all 4 one were the only mediocre ones ; i wouldn’t say they dropped the ball when they supposedly dropped the best r&c game (crack in time) and had another banger - tools of destruction & released a collection of the classics. i’d say they dropped the ball with the ps4 era since it was only one game , and that one game was a terrible remake and one of the worst r&c games of all time

@nomither6 Crack in Time was not good. It was bloated with the Clank sections being some of the worst sections in any game I’ve played. The pace of the PS3 games makes challenge mode fundamentally dull too, it’s way too slow with their focus on ‘cinematic’ elements. The HD versions of the PS2 games also just introduce bugs and the audio is broken. The PS4 Ratchet and Clank might not be great but it’s also a lot better than anything they’d done in years and they had Spider-Man come out too. Tools of Destruction was pretty good but it’s also a big step down from the PS2 games.

@nessisonett can’t argue with that . i guess i should tell you now that i’ve never even played a crack in time 😂 & i do remember having issues with the collection as well. i still need to finish it one of these days.

@nomither6 A lot of people love ACiT but I’d argue that it’s possibly because they haven’t played it recently or immediately beside the original trilogy to compare them. PS2 games really do hold up a lot of the time, they’re mostly 60FPS and have immediate gameplay that isn’t broken up with a million cutscenes or feel like they’re on rails with ‘cinematic set pieces’

One thing I love about the Dead Space remake is that they give you all the weapons for free compared to the original where you had to buy them. Why would I want to spend a scarce resource on something that I might not even like? At least this way, I get to try all of them out and see which ones I like. I remember playing through the entirety of the original with only the Plasma Cutter due to this. Now I've discovered new favourites, such as the Line Gun and Contact Beam. The former is basically a more powerful Plasma Cutter and the latter just eviscerates everything. Very awesome weapons.
