Topic: Who loves some Dreamcast?

Well today I received my black sports edition Dreamcast from the Goodwill auction site.  It works just fine came with two controllers, all the cords and Sonic Adventure.  I have to say after playing it a few hours this console was seriously underrated.  I think all the backlash that this console got was backlash from the Genesis/Saturn debacles.  I don't know maybe its me and I have only played this game (Since its the only one I own) but so far I am enjoying the system.  I never owned one when they were first released since at that time I only had enough money for one system and I went with PS2 that gen, by the time I had enough for another one the DC was already discontinued and I went with the Gamecube instead so I can't really go into the games untill I get some.

So anyone else out there enjoyed the Dreamcast?

Dreamcast never really got much backlash, it just got overlooked because of all the hype that surrounded PS2. I'm a big fan of the Dreamcast, it was easily the most forward-thinking console of its time and for the 2 1/2 years on the market amassed a pretty impressive library. In fact, I'd put its lineup easily ahead of Gamecube's and the original Xbox combined.

Yeah I remember the Gamestops around in my area at the time had huge sections for the Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox but very small Dreamcast section, which when Sega announced the discontinuing of the Dreamcast it came as no surprised to me.

Just one question what are the VMU's exactly used for?

VMU's were the memory unit. It had a screen and I guess for certain games you could use them to for mini games, like raising Chao you collected in Sonic Adventure. I never actually owned a VMU though. I had generic third party memory cards with no screen.

Ah ok so they were the memory cards for the Dreamcast good to know if I want to save my games.  Might have to pick up a few.

Still got mine. Put it away a couple of months ago but its always available if I feel the urge for some good ol' gaming. So many classics on the Dreamcast, what are looking at trying? I may be able to give you a heads up as Ive played quite a lot of titles on the system over the years.

The system actually sold really well at launch, selling out in the states I believe. Most people attribute its demise to the Sony hype machine for the Ps2 that started up not too long after, not sure if thats the case but its a possibility. Theres so many neat features for the console that were groundbreaking at the time, Sega Net for example was a unified online system that was clearly the influence behind Xbox Live. Id also recommend seeking out a VGA cable. While expensive these days (Around £25 for VGA box on Ebay) its worth it as most games actually have 480p output. It'll amaze how crisp the graphics can be on it

I am pretty much willing to give anything a shot game wise.  Although, I will probably pass on Marvel Vs Capcom 2 since I have it on XBLA and I here it can be pretty pricey on the DC.  Other then that I am open to any suggestions.

Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia and PSO were so much ahead of time =). And do you remember Outtrigger? I really liked it, meh. I liked Sega style in the past. Also Maken X =).... OMG, so many good and innovative games. Skies of Arcadia was great example for other RPGs, but they followed FFX example and now JRPGs have become a joke, mostly =(. Only Nintendo and Ubisoft took some ideas from Skies of Arcadia with Skyward Sword and Black Flag, LOL =)))).

I have yet to play Shenmue (I have a copy but it's packed up for my move) but I did play Skies of Arcadia but it was the Gamecube port, since at the time I didn't have a DC and I will agree its one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, right up there with Legend of Dragoon.

DREAMCAST!

One of my all-time favourite consoles. It's such a damn shame it flopped the way it did - it was such a fantastic bit of kit.

My favourite games are definitely the Shenmue duo. Utterly brilliant pieces of software that had me glued to the TV. I literally played them days on end. I have fond memories of being shocked upon seeing the sunrise outside the window whilst engaged with Ryo Hazuki's adventure.

Other games I enjoyed included Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 (though the first one has aged pretty badly), Soul Calibur, Chu Chu Rocket, Space Channel 5, Seaman, Crazy Taxi, Omikron: The Nomad Soul & Powerstone.

If you can afford it, pick-up a copy of Samba De Amigo with maracas. The price will make you cry, but you'll be in for a good time, lol.

Well I got a chance to sit down and try out the Dreamcast I bought everything works fine and I played some Sonic Adventure.  So I guess time for what I think since I have never played a DC before.

OMG!!!  The graphics, the voice acting (as bad as it is but that's not what I am getting at it's just the amount), the soundtrack to Sonic Adventure I can say I can see what all the hype is about this machine.  Honestly if this system had the support and the library that the PS2 had Sega probably wouldn't have probably left the console industry.  This thing at the time of the PS2 release clearly blows the PS2 out of the water.  While I am not saying that the PS2 was bad the DC clearly at the time of the beginning of that Gen was miles ahead of Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.

Now to get a few more games.

Library wise, it did have one of the best ratios of good/great-to-bad games that I've ever seen.

Moi. I have though, as of November 2013, gotten rid of thou Dreamcast.

It flopped because Sega gave up too soon. Pathetic. There was a lot of hype surrounding PS2 and Xbox. I believe if they had let it carry on as was it could have picked up within 3 to 5 years. It was an awesome console with no faults other than poor sales. Also I think that EA dumping the Dreamcast didn't help. Pigs.

Sega probably would've gone completely out of business if it stuck with the Dreamcast though. It wasn't in a great place financially and the hype for PS2 was too strong, Nintendo had the Gamecube on the way and MS was entering the business with Xbox. Too many players and despite having awesome games it didn't seem like Sega could give Dreamcasts away for free. Lack of EA support definitely didn't help. The most unfortunate part about that is Sega's sports games, were actually better. Madden was still good back on PS2 but NFL 2K was better, NHL 2K was better than NHL and NBA 2K vs. Live wasn't even a contest. But, consumers loved them some EA. I'm not sure how much great EA support would've helped the DC in the long run though, EA was very much in bed with Sony back in those days and even if it was giving Sega some games, it still likely would've made sure to make PS2 versions the ones to get.

Ok so I have to ask this.  Other then ebay what are some good online places that I can get Dreamcast games at for a decent price in the US?

Probably nowhere other than niche retro gaming shops. If you haven't played nomad soul then give it a go if you can find a copy. You'll either love it or hate it, it's worth buying just to witness the wondrous David Bowie as an uploaded human consciousness living in the network. Totally awesome game that flopped and got cancelled for PS. I believe it got a re release on steam last year.

Yeah I have a couple of retro gaming shops near where I live but I haven't had a chance to check them out yet.   Might go there this weekend if I get a chance in between moving.
