Anyone here have this phone? My trusty W810i is finally on its last legs (the fact I had Pokemon Blue on it is probably the reason Ive stuck by it so long lol) and its time to get a new phone. Im quite interested in the Xperia as its a Playstion Certified device n obviously the slide up game pad would be great for games. The Xperia would also be a gameing on the go stop-gap for me till I get a Vita in a few months time. An iPhone is outta the question (overhyped to me) but ive had a windows phone before n it was good. Only downside is I find touchscreen cumbersome for games so it really only leaves the Xperia Play. What are the games like on the Xperia and which are the best/ideal games available?

*Ive put this in the gameing section as im mainly interested in the gameing aspects of Xperia Play.

I've had one since they launhed, enjoyed having it but if I'm honest since I got the Vita I've barely touched it for games. It's a decent phone, but the included Sony Ericsson bloat-ware cripple the system memory. It's specs were fairly average on release and a pretty low in comparison to new phones. The controller is good.

Android games are hit and miss, and very few are really good. There are gems out there but not a lot that will hold your attention for long. It's a missed opportunity in a lot of ways, and the PlayStation 1 games available are limited and expensive, and won't transfer previously purchased PS1 games from your PSN account.

If you're going to buy a Vita don't bother with getting an Xperia Play. Sony have confirmed that it won't be getting the ICS update, this coupled with the limitations of the hardware will make you feel like you've got a very outdated phone. I'm due to upgrade in November, I'll go for an Xperia S probably, having the Vita puts the XP games to shame really- and as I've said, I barely use it for games now.

Mojang made an awful choice, making Xperia Play the only Minecraft-compatible Sony device.  Minecraft would be heavenly on PS Vita, using the dual-stick setup for moving and turning the camera, using the touch screen to mine and attack, or something like that.  Once PlayStation Suite launches, I'm sure many people will send lots of Minecraft ripoffs into the store.   Now, back to topic, I'd rather a top-tier phone and and top-tier handheld on hand if I were you, with an old phone to hold you off until you get enough money for a better phone.

This signature is an awful waste of time

I don't own one and don't plan on it. Though it's nice that it can play PSone games anywhere you go. Which usually isn't possible, until the next update for Vita releases.

@KALofKRYPTON Just thought id let you know I took your advice n picked up a different phone instead of the Xperia Play and wait till I pick up a Vita for gaming on the go. Seen as I weren't too fussy I opted for the Xperia X8 at a reasonable 50 quid. Considering its tagged as an 'entry level' android phone it isnt half full of suprises lol It manages to handle everything II throw at it quite well.

If you interested Ive come across a few top notch games. New star soccer you've probably already heard of. ProjectINF is suprisingly feature rich in the online aspect considering its a phone game. Its a 24 player online top-down shooter complete with unlocks, leaderboards etc but best of all its free. Without a doubt the best Ive come across is a gem called The Infinite Black MMO. Its basically a simplified versoin of Eve Online for android. If anyone here is on android you should give it a try, Its completely free and has a sizeable player count too its fairly popular.

@MadchesterManc - Thanks for making this thread, as I've also been thinking of purchasing an Xperia Play!

I'm tempted to buy an Android/Sony phone because of the upcoming Playstation Mobile service (what with Sony owning Gakai and all that).

Hey man. No worries.

My Play is having a mini renaissance at the moment.I traded my 60 GB PS3 and the Vita (sadly) for 320 Slim in red.

Games on the Xperia Play tend to be exclusives/optimisations only. It's odd I suppose that moving from the Desire HD to the Xperia Play made me really not want any touch screen games, If it doesn't use the controls I don't tend to play it.

It's a shame we won't see another Xperia Play really, even the same form factor with some shiny quadcore/Tegra innards would do. Perhaps PlayStation Mobile will make them think twice . . .

I'm sure y'all have noticed this thread looks very different -- all reference to emulation, rooting, modding, and hacking has (to the best of my knowledge) been removed. That portion of the discussion falls under the 'Unacceptable Content' portion of our Community Rules. Please, there are plenty of other forums out there to discuss doing whatever you like to things you've purchased; Push Square is simply not the place, I'm afraid.

We appreciate your understanding, and as always, the Contact Form is available if you have any questions. Thank you! :3
