Technically speaking, at least, Watch Dogs Legion is an objectively better game on PlayStation 5 than PlayStation 4. It runs better, it looks better, and it loads much faster. That all does wonders for creating a much smoother experience on Sony's latest console, making sure you spend a lot more of your precious time in the thick of London's grittiest action. However, when we delivered our PS4 verdict of Watch Dogs Legion last month, our issues lied more with the monotonous gameplay loop and disappointing "play as anyone" concept rather than technical setbacks. Those criticisms remain true on PS5. Watch Dogs Legion looks and runs better than ever, but it's still not particularly fun to play.
While Ubisoft has pushed its other holiday release, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, to run at 60 frames-per-second on PS5, the same cannot be said of this lesser counterpart. London and its boroughs still run at the same 30 frames-per-second as the PS4 version, but at least the city looks more life-like than ever before. Lighting really pops, particularly when neon signing and ray-tracing are involved. It helps to bring more colour to the mean streets of England's capital, impressively brightening surroundings during the day and keeping clarity once the sun goes down. A noticeable improvement over the last-gen version indeed.
That carries over to visuals in general even when moody lighting doesn't try to set a certain tone. Character models actually look quite like normal humans being on PS5, rather than some of the atrocities captured on PS4 served up by the game's random NPC generator. Environments are more detailed too, especially when it comes to stonework and the more minute details that make up a location. They're aspects you may pass on admiring in the middle of a gunfight, but wrap back around and there's a lot of beauty to take in.
Better yet, the lighting glitch that reared its ugly head in our playthrough on the previous-gen console is now nowhere to be seen. That doesn't mean the updated undertaking is devoid of any bugs, however. Vehicles and objects continue to fade in and out of existence at random, even if the act happens right before your very eyes. It's not a good look.
Load times were another source of frustration on PS4, but they have been dramatically reduced on the new machine. The initial load into the open world takes just 16 seconds on PS5, a gigantic improvement over the 67-second wait on Sony's now outdated system. Fast travelling across the map can now be done in eight seconds rather than 33 while switching between Operatives take up 11 seconds of your time. That one's not quite as big of a reduction — 15 seconds on PS4. Where there was a load screen or fade to black in the PS4 version, there continues to be one on PS5. But they're nowhere near as lengthy this time around.
Supporting the DualSense controller is very quickly becoming an important facet of a next-gen title, and Watch Dogs Legion probably doesn't do enough to get a pass. Adaptive triggers simulate the pull of a weapon's trigger in a rather basic manner and that's about the only implementation of the feature we could find. Haptic feedback, meanwhile, is nowhere to be seen. Ubisoft's lacking attempt to make use of the DualSense pad is disappointing, but then it's impossible to tell how much time the publisher actually had to incorporate much support. The real test will be placed upon the shoulders of next year's releases.
PS5 allows Watch Dogs Legion to look and run much better, but at the end of the day, it's still very much the same game. The ability to play as anyone quickly falls by the wayside as you find comfort in a select few Operatives who always get the job done, meaning the concept never finds time to develop. Every character plays the same, with menial perks and skills not enough to convince you into switching multiple times throughout missions. That’s what Ubisoft wants you to do, but ends up giving you absolutely no reason to do so.
And then there's the general gameplay loop — one which rests on the laurels of past entries and actually strips the experience of a lot of hacking. Gunplay is serviceable at best, exploring the open world is more frustrating than it should be with poor vehicle handling, and traversal is generally rather dull. The best thing about it continues to be the hacking puzzles and Spiderbot minigames. At least they're pretty fun.
Conclusion
Watch Dogs Legion might look and run better than ever on PS5, but that means little when the game itself struggles to break the boundaries of mediocrity. This next-gen version remains unchanged from its PS4 counterpart as far as gameplay goes, so the boosted performance does little to hide the title's underlying issues. No matter how well it runs, Watch Dogs Legion needs to sort out how it plays.

It's a shame cause I loved watch dogs 2. But this game looked uninspiring from the start.
Is a shame as I thought the second one was decent...
Will give this a miss me thinks
@God_of_Nowt I know what you mean, I haven't tried Legion yet, but in both WD1 and WD2, my issues began the moment I could use guns. I so wanted to play a hacker, not a cold-blooded killer shooting everyone.
It was especially difficult for WD2, where you play as a San Francisco hipster, but can still carry enough weapons to make Rambo blush... I've tried not using the weapons at all, just the yoyo (WTF!), the taser and the drones, but some parts of the game clearly expect you to go guns blazing...
They should embrace the hacking thing and focus on just that part of their games, on the voyeuristic pleasure to watch and listen private lives, to be unseen and unknown and the rush of power that comes from it.
Got the platinum the other day and quite enjoyed my time in London. Sure, it does nothing new but it's jolly good fun with all the hacking techniques. Bagley was a good laugh, too.
@Olmaz Yeah, I think ubisoft is scared to make games without killing, it's so jaring to play as good guy hacker in watch dog 2 but we still have to kill people, wd 2 should have non lethal weapons rather than normal gun, wd series can be ubisoft open world, gta-like, non-violent games rather than just another open world games.
Probably won't bother with this. Valhalla and Cyberpunk will take up enough time this side of Xmas, Legions doesn't seem worth the time really.
Personally I find every game by Ubisoft entirely skippable
Pretty much as expected, Alex on the Angry Joe show gave it a 4, said it had potential but it has very repetitive quests and the characters don't matter as it just boils down to using the spiderbot
Glad I swerved this. Belongs in the last gen.
I quite enjoyed it. I thought they captured the look and feel of London (or any UK city) really well. Driving through the streets at night felt very authentic. Just a shame the story wasn’t more interesting or hard-hitting.
I expected the political aspects to be much worse (?) but it wasn’t anything like I imagined. Quite inoffensive really - not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing? I’m generally against real-world political issues in games but for all the hype and the marketing, I expected more controversy and scandal - would have made for a more interesting game tbh.
Highlight for me was escaping the underground bunker with The Prodigy’s ‘Light up the sky’ blasting through the speakers, bullets flying everywhere. Wish there had been more moments like this.
Overall I thought it was a very polished, authentic, open-world - with a poor story. Worth playing just to explore the map.
4 pros and 6 cons = 5/10
... what a math...
@djlard As @JapaneseSonic said, that's not at all how it works.
@Kanji-Tatsumi Ubisoft singlehandedly ruined open world games for me.
I can still enjoy certain ones, but many times when I see an open world game, it just looks like the same regurgitated formula.
@djlard *maths.
I gotta tell you this game...I just can't touch it after having so many great ones to play on PS5. I should've bought Dirt 5 or COD
This score is 2 or more below the average score for this game.
@blacklivesmatter To be honest I thi k that 5.5/10 or there about is quite fair for Legion, and this is coming from a huge fan of Ubisoft games. I even loved WD1 and WD2 so much that I had pre ordered the £75 a gold edition of Legion since I assumed I would love it, but am now wishing I had waited until it was below £30 or £20
Just really hope they do something fresh with far cry 6!! (Hated far cry 5)
I think they should just give up on the franchise. The first was ok, second slightly better bit at least more fun to play, particularly in co-op, but this one held zero interest for me from day one.
The quick swap character feature just reminded me of the one Battlefield Modern Combat (first console Battlefield) feature of hotswapping soldiers on the Battlefield.
It was cool sure, but ultimately not a bid deal.
This seems to be the same, only with the added feature of characters being able to be more unique. But I dont want to control tons of different characters, just give me one good pre-made one or let me create my own.
@Diani_beachboy
FarCry 5 had the best implementation of co-op im the series at least, and planes, so that was nice. The setting was ok, the story was lackluster and I honestly just didn't care. It was miles better than 4, I just did not like 4, well except for the wing suit and the gyro copter/grenade launcher combo that made the game incredibly easy! 😈🤣
Oh, I surprisingly really enjoyed fishing in Far Cry 5 with my brother. So I hope that comes back. Heck, id even play a fishing game with him if it had co-op and was as fun as it was in FC5.
Its just hard to beat FC3 for me. Vaas, while unfortunately underused, was an amazing villain, and the tropical setting is almost a must for FarCry.
"Cons - It's still Watch Dogs Legion"
That got a bit of a laugh out of me
There's another issue i bought the watchdogs legion gold edition on ps4( digital edition) so on ps5 shouldn't i get same version because its gave me standard edition on ps5 instead but get ps4 versions season pass
I loved the first game not the sequel ,this one I gave a miss IL pick it up on games with gold , ps+ freebie or a steam sale.
I'm no rushing to get it.
@Kang81 yeah the co-op was great! Sure the next one will have the whole thing co-op as well as opposed to 4s odd free roam only approach.
Have never done the fishing co-op!
3 was awesome, imagine they’ll capture that with the setting of this new one (I hope). Would love a return though to Far Cry 2s grittiness (minus the malaria!). I was hoping this new one would be set back in Africa - but imagine the next one will. So much untapped potential!
This game is so bad y’all
I genuinely liked some of my Dedsec operatives, like my Clan Kelly 18 year old recruit. She was a proper cocky little chav who called everybody 'fam' but she had a good rapport with Bags. I didn't think the voice acting or writing was that bad either to be honest.
Oh dear. I really loved 2 on PS Now so was looking forward to this. Might be worth waiting till it’s cheap or free.
I've only played about 2 hours of it so far, but it feels a bit claustrophobic compared to WD2 - the tall buildings make everything feel very enclosed.
Combat is a bit annoying too - when you're in a scrap and you need to flee in a car, triangle throws an uppercut instead of opening the car door. I'll obviously give it more time but I don't have that "must continue playing it now" feeling I got with the second.
@AFCC yeah I kinda wish I bought sackboy instead of this now,I might give it a proper go when I've finished demon souls and miles
the reviewer is cleary a hater. the game is good (not amazing) but good and entertaining
@nessisonett I would give it a try, I liked it as much as the second... though i admit the missions are a tad more repetitive
Yet another reason why I always wait for Ubisoft games to drop down to $20 with all DLC included.
I love how nearly all reviews of this game from YouTubers who'd played alphas/betas and reviewers were all raving about this game and how good it was to be multiple people yet when the game comes out officially all I hear are crickets
I'll pick this up web when it's £25.

(Cheap Arse Gamer)
Only a matter of time....
It's already been reduced to £38.99 in the Sony black Friday sale. That's saying something so soon after release.
For anyone in the US you can get it right now for$29.99 with a $10 reward certificate at Best Buy!!!
@Olmaz I finished WD Legion without killing anybody unnecessarily using stealth melee and non lethal weapons. All the goons that you take out are hospitalised. It has much better stealth gameplay that the first two games.
@ApostateMage Good to know, I'll maybe give it a try it then when it's on a deep sale. The city of London in itself seems worth it for a low price.
@fabisputza00 nope. I like Watch Dogs 1 more than this and that's saying something
... It's such a poor review... The bias in language and tone is shocking... And it's against the grain of so many other reviews... Very poor show...
