What are all Resident Evil movies and where can you watch them? As one of the more popular video game franchises to branch off into cinema, the Resident Evil series is watched on TV screens just as much as it's played on consoles. In this guide, we are going to reveal all Resident Evil movies and where to watch or buy them. Since there is no obvious ordering to the films — they lack a number in the title — this page will be presented in release order of each movie.

All Resident Evil Movies and Where to Watch Them
There are 7 Resident Evil movies spread across two series. The first series consists of six films starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, and then a rebooted saga which only has one movie at the time of writing. Below you'll find key details on all Resident Evil movies, including a plot synopsis, prominent actors, and how you can watch them across physical media and streaming services. This guide will focus on the live-action movies, not the animated films.
How Many Resident Evil Movies Are There?
In total, there are 11 Resident Evil movies spread across the live-action and animated instalments. Below you'll find detailed information on the seven live-action films, as well as a quick look at where you can buy the four animated entries — which represent a different story — a little further down the page.
Resident Evil (2002)
Hitting cinema screens in 2002, the first Resident Evil movie adaptation told an original story, and borrowed little from the actual games. Here's a plot synopsis, as per IMDB:
A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.
The film was directed and written by Paul W.S. Anderson, with Milla Jovovich (Alice), Michelle Rodriguez (Rain), and Ryan McCluskey (Mr. Grey) starring. Resident Evil has a 33 rating on Metacritic and released to "generally unfavourable reviews". Richard Harrington of The Washington Post said: "In the end, it all looks and plays like a $40 million version of a game you're more likely to enjoy on a computer."

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Two years after Resident Evil, a direct follow-up very loosely adapts the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 with a visit to Raccoon City, and the introduction of S.T.A.R.S. hunter Nemesis. Here's a plot synopsis, as per IMDB:
Alice wakes up in the Raccoon City hospital after the area has been overrun by zombies, and must now make it out of the city before a nuclear bomb is dropped.
Paul W.S. Anderson returned to write the sequel, but it was directed by Alexander Witt. Milla Jovovich (Alice) reprised her role, but new faces to the cast included Sienna Guillory (Jill Valentine), Oded Fehr (Carlos Olivera), Sophie Vavasseur (Angie Ashford), and Jared Harris (Dr. Ashford). The film was received ever so slightly better than its predecessor with a Metacritic rating of 35.

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
The Resident Evil movie series gained its third entry in 2007, titled Resident Evil: Extinction. Having left Raccoon City behind, the film sees a group of survivors — including main character Alice — travel across the Mojave Desert in order to escape the zombie apocalypse engulfing the world. Here's a plot synopsis, as per IMDB:
Survivors of the Raccoon City catastrophe travel across the Nevada desert, hoping to make it to Alaska. Alice joins the caravan and their fight against the evil Umbrella Corp.
As always, Paul W.S. Anderson took up the main writing role, with the movie this time directed by Russell Mulcahy. Milla Jovovich (Alice) was back in the starring role, and Extinction saw Ali Larter (Claire) join the cast. Oded Fehr (Carlos Olivera) returned with Jason O'Mara (Albert Wesker) playing the famous villain. Resident Evil: Extinction continued the upwards trend of the series' positive critical response, earning a 41 Metacritic rating. At the 2008 Scream Awards, the winner of the Best Science Fiction Actress went to Milla Jovovich for her performance as Alice.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
The fourth instalment in the Resident Evil film saga took another three years to hit cinema screens, titled Resident Evil: Afterlife. Chris Redfield featured in the movie franchise for the first time as Alice and co hunted down Albert Wesker and tried to rescue any survivors in Los Angeles. Here's a plot synopsis, as per IMDB:
While still out to destroy the evil Umbrella Corporation, Alice joins a group of survivors living in a prison surrounded by the infected who also want to relocate to the mysterious but supposedly unharmed safe haven known only as Arcadia.
For the first time since the original movie, Paul W.S. Anderson both directed and wrote Resident Evil: Afterlife. Milla Jovovich (Alice) played her usual starring role and was joined by Ali Larter (Claire Redfield) and Wentworth Miller (Chris Redfield), best known for his role in Prison Break. This time, Shawn Roberts (Albert Wesker) played the villain. Resident Evil: Afterlife saw the film series take another quality dip, with a Metacritic rating of 37.

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
Resident Evil fans only needed to wait two years for the penultimate chapter in the series' first saga, named Resident Evil: Retribution. In this tale, Alice has been captured by Umbrella in an underwater facility, where the T-Virus is being tested. Naturally, she'll need to escape. Here's a plot synopsis, as per IMDB:
Alice fights alongside a resistance movement to regain her freedom from an Umbrella Corporation testing facility.
Paul W.S. Anderson once again returned to direct and write the series he started, with many classic characters from the games making their first appearance. Bingbing Li (Ada Wong), Johann Urb (Leon S. Kennedy), and Kevin Durand (Barry Burton) brought them all to life alongside the usual appearances from Milla Jovovich (Alice). Michelle Rodriguez (Rain) also returned for the first time since the first Resident Evil. The film didn't do particularly well with the critics, given a 39 Metacritic rating.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
The first Resident Evil movie saga was brought to a close in 2016 with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which saw Alice have to survive one last attack from Umbrella and Albert Wesker. Here's a plot synopsis, as per IMDB:
Alice returns to where the nightmare began: The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
This was the last Resident Evil movie Paul W.S. Anderson directed and wrote, and also signalled the conclusion of Milla Jovovich (Alice) in the series. Her story ends here, with other credits from Ali Larter (Claire Redfield), Ruby Rose (Abigail), and Shawn Roberts (Albert Wesker). Of the first six films, The Final Chapter is far and away the best-reviewed entry, with a 49 Metacritic rating.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City represents a brand new start to the series' movie adaptations, bringing Johannes Roberts on as director and writer. The film aims to stick very closely to the events of the original Resident Evil PS1 title in the Spencer Mansion, accurately retelling what happened there. Here's a plot synopsis, as per IMDB:
Set in 1998, this origin story explores the secrets of the mysterious Spencer Mansion and the ill-fated Raccoon City.
Since Welcome to Raccoon City closely adapts the story beats of the game, long-time fans got to see some of their favourite characters brought to life. Kaya Scodelario (Claire Redfield), Robbie Amell (Chris Redfield), Hannah John-Kamen (Jill Valentine), Tom Hopper (Albert Wesker), Avan Jogia (Leon S. Kennedy), Lily Gao (Ada Wong) were just some of the lucky actors tasked with playing these classic roles.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is one of the better-received movie tie-ins, garnering a 44 Metacritic rating. "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City sticks admirably closely to its source material, but an overly stuffed story and rushed third act hold it back," said IGN. Meanwhile, CNET said: "With a barrage of Easter eggs and fascinating takes on classic characters, the film's a gleeful trip back to the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon Police Department aimed squarely at fans."
