10. Tekken 7 (PS4)
Though showing its age a little these days, Tekken 7 remains a great fighting game. Its super-crunchy combat is arguably better than ever here, with its overhauled rage system giving even novice players a fighting chance. There's an OTT story to follow and a solid suite of modes to enjoy, including local and online multiplayer of course. An all-round excellent fighter.
9. Firewall Zero Hour (PS4)
Of all the first-person multiplayer shooters on PSVR, Firewall Zero Hour seems to be the one to have really caught on. This is an objective-based game in which teams contend for control of a map, completing tasks while taking out the opposition. It's intense and tactical, with matches not lasting more than a few minutes, and it's received tonnes of post-launch support, making it one of the most fleshed-out shooters on PSVR.
8. Minecraft (PS4)
Arguably one of the most culturally significant releases of modern times, Minecraft is up there with Super Mario and Space Invaders in terms of its impact on the industry. It also happens to be an absolutely superb game that’s ever-expanding thanks to Mojang’s live service model, which sees new content packs and gameplay mechanics added relatively regularly. With the boundless creative energy of LEGO and a genuinely engaging survival core, this is a title that can be almost whatever you want it to be, which helps underline its overall longevity.
7. WipEout Omega Collection (PS4)
The granddaddy of anti-gravity racing makes a triumphant return to PlayStation with a gorgeous remaster that brings together content from WipEout HD, Fury, and 2048. The fast and fluid racer plays beautifully, looks gorgeous, and runs like a shiny, metal dream. The recently added VR support is incredibly well implemented too, making this an even better package for PSVR owners. While we’d have preferred an all new entry in the franchise, this serves as a great reminder of why WipEout is so beloved by fans.
6. Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4)
Rise of the Tomb Raider takes Crystal Dynamics’ reboot and greatly raises the stakes, with more equipment and combat options than in the previous instalment. While structurally it’s largely familiar, and there are some serious question marks over the voice acting and script, the game offers a real rollercoaster of set-piece moments, taking heroine Lara Croft across the globe as she continues to evolve into the wise-cracking heroine we all know and love.
5. Dreams (PS4)
If you can imagine it, you can probably make it in Dreams. Media Molecule's latest is an unbelievable creative suite that lets you build practically whatever you fancy. The toolset is intuitive and seamless, allowing users to make truly impressive things with nothing more than a PS4 controller. But that's only half the story; if you don't want to build things, you can happily spend hours and hours simply exploring what others have created. The game is chock full of amazing stuff, including the developer's own Art's Dream story. It's hard to condense Dreams into a single paragraph, but just know it's among the very best PS4 has to offer.
4. Beat Saber (PS4)
Beat Saber is easily one of the most successful virtual reality games, and for good reason. Its intuitive gameplay puts a pair of laser swords in your hands, and all you need to do is chop blocks to the rhythm of the music. The direction of the cut, as well as various obstacles, give you a fair amount to think about as you swing your arms around, but it all feels very natural and deeply satisfying. With a large list of tracks (and diverse DLC packs available), there's plenty of music, too.
3. Tetris Effect (PS4)
Tetris is a timeless title that’s appeared on virtually every console to date. For such a ubiquitous game to appear on the list of best PS4 games is perhaps indication of just how special Tetris Effect is. Evocative environments are paired with an ever-changing soundtrack, which stirs emotions ranging from sadness to suspense to sheer euphoria. Played with PSVR this is a revelatory experience, and its underlying gameplay is as addictive as it’s ever been.
2. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (PS4)
Following a string of disappointing releases, Capcom got its beloved horror franchise back on track with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Set inside the dreadful house of the Baker family, Ethan Winters (that's you) must fight for his life and escape his captors. It marks a return to true survival horror, and ups the tension with a first-person perspective. If you want to make things even more claustrophobic, you can strap on a PSVR headset and play the entire thing in VR. Resi 7 drags the series back to its roots and sets the mood for what would come next.
1. Astro Bot Rescue Mission (PS4)
Team Asobi has refined the potential teased in The Playroom VR with the staggering Astro Bot Rescue Mission, a virtual reality platformer spread across 20 fantasy levels. By building its stages around you in 360-degrees and stereoscopic 3D, the title manages a level of immersion impossible on a standard display, all the while delivering best in class gameplay and some of the most charming art you’ll find on the PS4 full-stop. A sensationally strong effort, and by far one of the best games on PSVR.
