Death Stranding 2 Release Date and Platforms - When Is Death Stranding 2 Coming Out and What Consoles?

This first section of our Death Stranding 2 guide focuses on when and where you can play the game, covering topics like its release date and what consoles it might launch on.
What's the Death Stranding 2 Release Date?
Kojima Productions has confirmed Death Stranding 2 releases on 26th June 2025. You can gain access two days earlier, on 24th June, if you pre-order the Digital Deluxe edition.
What Consoles Will Death Stranding 2 Be On?
At the time of writing, Death Stranding 2 is only releasing on PS5. It's been announced as a PS5 exclusive.
Will Death Stranding 2 Be on PS4?
While the first game debuted on PS4 and was later updated for PS5 via the Director's Cut version, Death Stranding 2 will only come out on PS5 as far as PlayStation platforms are concerned.
Will Death Stranding 2 Be on PC?
Death Stranding 2 is only announced for PS5 so far, but the chances of it coming to PC are extremely high. It may stay exclusive to PS5 for a limited time, but the first game came to PC less than a year after its initial PS4 launch. There's a strong chance the same will happen with Death Stranding 2.

Will Death Stranding 2 Be on Xbox?
While the game is being marketed as a PS5 exclusive, there is a fairly good chance Death Stranding 2 will come to Xbox at some point in the far future. The first Death Stranding came to Xbox Series X|S in November 2024, five years after the original PS4 release. This was a result of Kojima Productions buying the rights to the IP from Sony.
Will Death Stranding 2 Be on Switch 2?
Kojima Productions has stated it wants to bring the Death Stranding IP to "more platforms and audiences", so may that include a Nintendo Switch 2 release? Potentially, but the power of Nintendo's next console is going to be a large factor in whether a port is possible or not. The first Death Stranding title hasn't come to the original Nintendo Switch either. Of the possible platforms Death Stranding 2 could release on, the Nintendo Switch 2 feels like the least likely.

Death Stranding 2 Story and Characters - Who Has Been Cast in Death Stranding 2?

For the third section of our Death Stranding 2 guide, we are covering the plot of the game as well as the characters you'll encounter and who's playing and voicing them.
What's the Death Stranding 2 Story and Is It a Sequel?
Death Stranding 2 will indeed act as a direct sequel to the first game, though most of its story remains a mystery. Here's the official plot setup from Kojima Productions:
Embark on an inspiring mission of human connection beyond the UCA. Sam – with companions by his side – sets out on a new journey to save humanity from extinction. Join them as they traverse a world beset by otherworldly enemies, obstacles and a haunting question: Should we have connected?
How Will Photo Mode Affect the Death Stranding 2 Story?
One of the more bizarre but fascinating details that has been revealed about Death Stranding 2 is that the game's Photo Mode will have an impact on the overall story in some way. Obviously, this is probably only going to be a minor affect as Photo Mode is an optional extra traditionally just for taking pictures in-game. However, Hideo Kojima has confirmed the Photo Mode has an impact on the Death Stranding 2 story and it "would be better to take good pictures" of the cast.

Does Death Stranding 2 Have Any Returning Characters?
The entire Death Stranding 2 cast has not been confirmed yet, but based on the two trailers we've received so far, there will be some returning faces from the first game. Main character Sam Porter Bridges is back after the events of the first game, and so too is Fragile and big bad guy Higgs.
What's the Death Stranding 2 Cast and Who Are the Voice Actors?
Hideo Kojima absolutely loves his celebrities, and just as he did with the first game, Death Stranding 2 will feature many well-known faces and voices. Given how impressive the cast already looks, click through to our own dedicated full cast and all voice actors guide for the complete list.
Will Mads Mikkelsen Be in Death Stranding 2?
Hideo Kojima has confirmed Mads Mikkelsen won't feature in Death Stranding 2 as Cliff, following the events of the first game.
Death Stranding 2 Gameplay - Will You Deliver Packages and Build Bridges in Death Stranding 2?
This next part of our Death Stranding 2 guide touches on how the sequel will play, discussing whether the gameplay will be similar to the first game and if we'll still be delivering packages and building structures.
Will the Death Stranding 2 Gameplay Be the Same as the First Game?
When it was first released, much was made of how a lot of people didn't really understand the Death Stranding loop. Coming off of Hideo Kojima's previous franchise Metal Gear Solid, the game was met with questions like: "What do you actually do?" It turns out that delivering packages and working out how to traverse the environment really was the gameplay focus, with combat not as important.
Six years later, though, it seems the general consensus on Death Stranding is far more positive. The sequel is expected to play similarly to the first game, with journeys across its map again the focus of gameplay. As a sequel, however, the gameplay loop may be expanded with new features and mechanics.
Death Stranding 2 FAQs - Why Is Sam Old and Who Is the Puppet in Death Stranding 2?

This final section of our Death Stranding 2 guide answers any outstanding questions about the game, its development, and certain elements that don't belong anywhere else.
How Close to Being Finished Is Death Stranding 2?
With a release date now confirmed for June, Death Stranding 2 is very close to being finished. Kojima Productions will now be working on the final few parts of production, including polishing and fixing any bugs. The developer will likely look to produce a final 1.0 version, known as "going gold", in late May.
What Engine Does Death Stranding 2 Use?
Death Stranding 2 uses the Decima Engine, which was first crated by Guerrilla Games for the PS4 launch game Killzone: Shadow Fall. It's since been used for Until Dawn and the two mainline Horizon games.
Why Is Sam Porter Bridges Old in Death Stranding 2?
As opposed to his appearance in the first game, Sam Porter Bridges appears much older in one specific scene in the original announcement trailer for Death Stranding 2. This could be due to a time skip that takes place during the sequel, or it could be the result of something that happens in the game. Remember the Timefall phenomenon, where rain touching a human rapidly accelerates their ageing. We see its affect on Fragile in the first game, and this could be one possibility for why Sam appears old in one trailer.
Who Is the Doll / Puppet in Death Stranding 2?
The doll / puppet we see in the second Death Stranding 2 trailer is called Dollman, and they're a man trapped inside a puppet. We don't know how they've gotten themselves into this situation yet, but it appears Dollman is a companion of Sam Porter Bridges, and is on his side along with Fragile. What's impressive about the character is whenever they're on-screen, the frame rate is purposefully lowered to give Dollman a stop-motion effect.

There will certainly be an overly long, tediously drawn out cut scene which'll have my eyes rolling into my head leaving me perplexed as to why Kojima is put on a pedestal. Then there will be a gameplay mechanic where I'll understand why I should put up with his many flaws.
I’ll offer something different:
Kojima is creative, pushes boundaries, has insane attention to detail, and is genuinely one of the only talented visions in the game industry these days. I can play tons of other games that I shoot people and they fall and I loot bodies, etc. I appreciate his offering of something different in this shooter/Ubisoft-open-world/metroidvania/turn-based/dialogue box filled landscape.
This is currently my most hyped game at this point in time. Alongside that on the same list is Dragonyhm, Petal Runner, The Transylvania Adventure Of Simon Quest, Twilight Bastion… a few others.
The first game was great as it unfolded and we learned the story and plot and there were a lot of points where I was like “WTF JUST HAPPENED.” Genuinely confused sometimes but always realizing what was going on. Very interesting, on-brand Kojima stuff.
I can’t say I have that excited reaction for many other games.
When I first played DS I didn't like it at all, I thought it was just a walking Sim, so switched it off and left it alone, I went back to it in 2024 and I got really into it although the story was confusing to me, I ended up enjoying the game overall, I'm really looking forward to DS2 but as it plays like the first one I might find myself playing it and dropping it only to come back to it later and enjoy it. We shall see.
I completed the DS1 and look forward to then sequel. I loved a lot in then first one and could really escape when playing it (for hours).
All that said I really hope the second installment have a lot of refinements when it comes to the GUI, Map and the constantly BT interruption of game flow when traversing the landscape etc.
@Brundleflies21
Those aren't flaws, those are features.
That being said, I did feel like I was "liking" DS1 because of the pedigree and not that I was truly enjoying the experience. Toward the end, it was just Inventory Managment: The Game.
@ChromaticDracula
But I also agree with you about the creative nature of Kojima games. His work truly is visionary.
I'm always excited for a Kojima title. There are always bits I dont care for, and I'm not sure I've ever actually understood the story, but there's always so much invention and vision I'd forgive almost any sin.
@MikeOrator It's a subjective view but to me he's as flawed as he is talented. MGS4 is as bafflingly terrible as it is occasionally genius.
Loved the game. The style was very engaging, even though some lamented the story driven cut scenes. The game has plenty of action but it's spaced in a way so you don't feel overwhelmed. Yeah it has some tedious parts but what game doesn't? If you played thru to the second map, you know exactly what I mean.
I replayed thru on the Xbox release focusing on achievements and found so much more to the game than I did the first time. Eagerly excited for the next one.
I put a good 10 hours into the first game and just couldn't get into it. Maybe it was the former mailman in me, but I thought it was just incredibly boring and bizarre. I've been a Kojima fan for decades, but I think he really needs a producer or co-writer to rein in some of his wacky ideas.
I reckon this will release around September. GTA6 will probably be out in Q4, and they will want to get this out before then.
I need to know more!
Crazy how it's an exclusive I feel that type of game is dead in the water now as competition is no longer like it used to be. Yet since Sony don't have anything right now for PS5 themselves it's a decision I understand but why it's not coming to PC at the same time baffles the hell out of me even more.
The only game, where having completed it i wrote a 2,500 word review to help me process what i had just played!
I still have my sealed Collectors Edition of the first game, and now have pre-ordered the Collectors Edition of the sequel too. Really looking forward to this. Right now, it could well be my most anticipated game, along with Expedition 33...
Do we happen to know whether you need to have played the first game to enjoy the sequel, @LiamCroft? I played the original when it first came out, and have forgotten the story, so basically I'm asking whether I need to zip through the first game again in order to refresh my memory. Thanks...
@Fiendish-Beaver The story is a direct continuation of the first game, so while you may be able to somewhat follow the events of the sequel, the chances are a lot of things will be lost on you. Obviously, I haven't played DS2 yet so I can't say for certain, but I would recommend at the very least watching a YouTube recap of the first game's plot.
For some reason I cannot order the collectors edition in the US Playstation Direct Store. I have been trying for days... I'm not the only one with this problem it seems. It says in stock.
"Thank you for your interest in the direct.playstation.com experience. Unfortunately we are unable to process your transaction. Please visit one of our retail partners."
No idea...
Thank you for the response, @LiamCroft. Tis appreciated...
