Below is a list of all shields locations and upgrades in God of War Ragnarok. In addition to an overview of each individual shield, we've also included a wealth of supplementary information, so you can better appreciate the cost of levelling up each defensive armament and the impact it'll have on your abilities.

Guardian Shield

You unlock the Guardian Shield at the beginning of the game, during Surviving Fimbulwinter, but it is initially listed as Broken Guardian Shield. You get the fixed Guardian Shield after speaking to Brok at the beginning of The Word of Fate. The official description reads: "A shield gifted to Kratos by his beloved wife Laufey. Wielded by the Just."

• Shield Check: Double tap L1 to quickly Shield Check an enemy and break their guard. Parry and then immediately press R1 or R2 to do special counterattacks.

All Guardian Shield Upgrades

Dauntless Shield

You unlock the Dauntless Shield by crafting it at the Huldra Brothers' workshop. The official description reads: "A shield crafted for a warrior focused on their foe's intentions. Not for the faint of heart."

• Shield Bash: Double tap L1 to Shield Bash for high stun damage. Parry to deal stun to the attacker and empower your next Shield Bash. Time the parry perfectly to significantly improve this effect.

All Dauntless Shield Upgrades

Stone Wall Shield

You unlock the Stone Wall Shield by crafting it at the Huldra Brothers' workshop. The official description reads: "A shield moulded after the great wall in Asgard built by the giant Hrimthur. Protect the realms."

• Shield Slam: Double tap L1 to Shield Slam, launching enemies when fully charged. Block attacks to absorb the hit and build up the charge. Guard-break attacks can be blocked when not fully charged.

All Stone Wall Shield Upgrades

Shatter Star Shield

You unlock the Shatter Star Shield by looting it from a Legendary Chest in Vanaheim during The Reckoning. The official description reads: "A shield bathed in the radiant light of a thousand dying stars. Force of the Cosmos."

• Shield Punch: Double tap L1 to Shield Punch and blow enemies backwards, increasing in power when fully charged. Hold L1 to charge up your shield. Blocking an attack depletes some charge. Shield Punch right before an attack hits you to absorb it and gain a burst of charge.

All Shatter Star Shield Upgrades

Onslaught Shield

You unlock the Onslaught Shield by looting it from a Legendary Chest in Helheim during Reunion, immediately after fighting Garm. The official description reads: "A shield inspired by tales of the Aesir steeds trampling battlefields. Stampede into battle."

• Shield Rush: Double tap L1 to Shield Rush forward into an enemy while blocking incoming attacks. Use from a greater distance to launch enemies on impact.
