At a recent DICE talk attended by Polygon, Sony big-wig Dave Ranyard spoke at length about the firm's upcoming virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus. In particular, he spoke about whether or not the dapper device has the potential to be as revolutionary as sound was for silent films.
"Is virtual reality a disruptive technology?" asked Ranyard. "I think that it is; I think that it could be. All of the ingredients are there." The executive continued by stating that the tech is at an early stage, and still has a long way to go. In truth, we're of the same mind. However, until the Japanese giant can demonstrate a long-term commitment to the hardware, we won't be holding our breath. Oh, and some quality software certainly wouldn't go astray.
What do you make of Project Morpheus? Do you think that it has the potential to be game changing? Give us your professional opinion in the comments section below.

I'm really excited for this VR headset. I hope that Silent Hills works with this.
@Demi_God I think you're absolutely right! If Silent Hills ends up being closer to P.T. (less gameplay, more interactive story-type-thing), then I think that would be the perfect game to sell it - at least to the "hardcore" crowd.
I wanna be like sword art online type of game with the vr head set. I would play for hours if I could be in a jrpg type game I would pay alot of money for this if it happens
Until they demonstrate to me that "presence" (aka the point of VR) works just as well in third person games (a lot of them, not just niche games catered to the device) then I have zero interest. First person games do not interest me in the least bit.
@Demi_God : you are a mad man!!! silent hills in VR would give me a heart attack lol.......BUT THERES NOTHING I WANT MORE! (silent hills with morpheous, NOT a heart attack) its going to be such a long wait for silent hills i sure hope its first person with cut scenes so they can show off there stupid holy wood actor. i HATE known actors being in ANYTHING, it just takes me out of the experience. high profile actors are ONLY used to get people to pay attention. i hate it lol. i hope norman reedus is playing the part of lisa
ps-incase my reply to demi god didnt work, how do i reply to people?
@thedevilsjester well I actually feel the exact opposite. I've never been a fan of third person games but if they get The Order to work on this I'm sold
This is the most exciting advancement in video games since 3D games broke loose on PS1 and N64.
Can't wait to "Ohh" and "Ahh" at being in 3D worlds now. Day1.
Still needs improvement. Refresh rate was too low when I tried it last month.
Tell us more......
they need to make sure they do everything possible to have it running the best it can when it releases including but not limited to waiting a couple years to perfect it. they will only get one chance to do this. i for one am praying that it turns out amazingly. ive been waiting for VR for like 20 years.
I'm definitely going to get it, not sure when though but i am going to try.
Of course he'll big it up, he's hardly likely to say "You know there's been a long, long line up of crap add-ons for consoles over the years? Add this to the list! Best start queuing now so all your friends can tell you what a prat you are for wasting hundreds of pounds!" are they? It's when people not connected in any way to Sony start saying its a game changer that you should start taking note. PS Move was the future once. And WonderBook, Mega CD, 32X, 64DD...
@tonyp1987 Maybe someday with headsets like this emotiv.com
Currently they only work brain to computer, not the other way around. Once they can send info to your brain though it could work like SAO. I've seen demos of their original model(EPOC) and it looks hard to use. I don't know much about their newer model (Insight)
I would get this if for no other reason than being able to lay and play games comfortably. That is assuming you can use it as a screen for games that don't support it's other functionalities.
@thedevilsjester I can't understand this. I get that you don't like first person perspective in games. But have you used an oculus yet? It feels very different to playing a first person game on a screen.
Still think MS bought Minecraft to keep it off Sony and Facebook's VR devices.
@Morrowbie too late for that, mods have already been made
I might be interested in the article, but I don't read anything Polygon puts out anymore.
To the broader point, yes, I'm hugely excited! I hope PS chooses quality over quantity when releasing software for Morpheus. The last thing the fragile future of VR needs is a bunch of half-baked duds.
VR, and I'm one of its biggest supporters (You know, the kind that sits at home and writes on message boards how much he's looking forward to VR without contributing meaningful to its success or creation in any way), has a lot to prove before one can say it's like going from silent film to talkies. Talkies were a new, superior way of telling stories on screen. Can VR be a new, superior way of gaming? The commitment to R&D, to promotion, and to making really good games, has to be there first. This can't be another half-assed Sony project they forget about in a year if it's going to succeed.
@MoleZandor not that the general public would notice, though, surely? Also, I think it's the potential sequel they would want more control over.
It's good to see positive and constructive comments on this much better then the comments in last weeks Morpheus article
I'm getting this shiz no questions asked ya digg 😚💨💨💨💨💨💨
