We had expected the PlayStation 4’s price to settle in sub-£300 territory by Boxing Day, but Sony seems utterly determined to maintain its market share in Britain this Christmas. As such, GameStop UK has now dropped the price of the standalone Glacier White system to £299.97, which is considerably cheaper than its RRP.
This is just the latest in a long line of promotions on Sony’s system of late, with GAME also lining up some outrageous bundles online. This has all led to speculation that the Japanese giant may be about to drop the price of its console on these shores, but we reckon that it’ll be happy simply watching retailers compete.
Still, the situation does make the platform holder’s silence in North America seem a little strange. Microsoft had the most success with the Xbox 360 in the UK and the United States, so we’re surprised that SCEA has allowed the Redmond-based manufacturer to release a slew of seriously cheap holiday bundles in the USA uncontested.
Perhaps it still yet has a master plan hidden up its sleeve...

Game usually isn't the cheapest, but they have some insane bundles available right now.
Maybe they are testing price drops in areas that they historically have a bigger foothold in to see if lowering the cost (and eating the difference even more) results in a sales increase that makes it worth it and will follow suite in the US (where they can't slip up for risk of giving the US to Microsoft) if the results are a net positive. Just theory crafting...
I said it would go sub £300 so many times by the end of the year and I was right.
Careful if you buy a ps4 from gamestop uk -my one turned up with no padding in the parcel.Faulty of course..I decided to a get replacement from sony, instead of a replacement from gamestop because it'd be more likely packaged properly..which it was.Big sponge box thing.
Has SONY USA gone on Xmas holiday already it seems Where are the USA PS4 deals SONY?!?!
@thedevilsjester I certainly hope that's the case...Sony would be crazy to not drop the price in USA this Christmas.
Lots of variables on the Sony price drop. Maybe they just don't feel they need to? Supply and demand and all that? Maybe they are just waiting for the big Vegas Experience next month to announce something for last minute shoppers? Maybe they are so far over their yearly prediction for PS4 sales - what could they have realistically expected, 10 - 12m? - it's all gravy to them now? Can't imagine their marketing wouldn't do something though?
I really don't know how retail works, and every time this website writes something like "Sony is offering..." I wonder how much of that is Sony's doing and how much is it just the retailer having a sale? Sony offering it's usual BF family bundle like all those PS3 $199 deals the past few years makes sense, but maybe they figure they'll just let the retailers do it for them w/ GC and bundles of their own? Why should Sony get less money when they can just let retailers eat the cost? The last few years GC have been everywhere, not expecting them to go away anytime soon. The B&M stores are too afraid of Amazon, they need the foot traffic of redeemed GCs. And Sony needs all the money it can get.
Damn that's cheap!
If they keep this up, I might get me one of those glacier white PS4's for when Mrs Cat is hogging the launch day PS4 I bought. I was going to hold out for a PS4 slim but, damn, that price is tempting.
@Jazzer94 but u know this isn't sony lowering the price right?
@sampson3121 Where did I imply it was?
