The first Shenmue III screenshot released didn't exactly capture the imagination, but the project's been in development for a little while now, and is slowly beginning to take shape. These images, deployed to coincide with a Shibuya Productions hosted event named Magic Monaco earlier today, really impress, showing shots of Shenhua's home, as well as Bailu Village.
The game's obviously far from being finished, but it's definitely beginning to show signs of that thick Shenmue atmosphere which fans fell in love with over a decade ago. Shenmue Dojo actually put together some comparison images between the latest game and Shenmue II, which we've included below. You'll also find a short video showing off-screen footage of an environmental flythrough.
We still have to pinch ourselves every time we write about Shenmue III, to be honest.

Reminds me that I'm still waiting for my japanese garden Wii U game, very similar graphics. And I think I've now seen more of Shenmue 3 than Zelda U. And more this week of Shenmue 3 than Ratchet & Clank (I'm still mad it wasn't in yesterday's "Greatness Awaits" commercial.)
@rjejr Ratchet & Clank is rad. Really fun, though I agree that Sony's not really getting behind it as much as they should be.
@get2sammyb I also find it awesome that its half the price of a normal game
@SKC_Diamond Yeah, without wanting to go off-topic too much, it doesn't feel like a "cheaper" game. It's definitely more of the same, but it's great fun, and the graphics are some of the best I've seen on PS4.
@get2sammyb You going to cover the Critics Choice weekend sale?

Funded this game, and it's looking great!
@rjejr
It's gonna be a Zelda blowout this E3.
While it sucks we haven't seen much of it, it will only serve to make the reveal this E3 that much more impressive, where it will basically be a finished game. And when they announce it as a launch title for NX you may want to reconsider even getting it on Wii U
@MadAussieBloke It's not finished yet. Besides, we already know it's not the Shenmue most of us waited for; instead of giving us a proper ending he sees a business opportunity to make 'another' trilogy out of it so 3 will just be filler. I hope the gameplay is fun, else we're totally screwed.
I hope when it launches you'll be able to say "I told you so" to all nay sayers, but I must admit I'm afraid it'll be those critics that are right.
@rjejr @get2sammyb Isn't there also an actual proper ratchet and clank movie coming out around the same time as the game? yes, here. Given that, shouldn't there be much more of a hype train, or at least any marketing at all? If not for the pre-order icon on my ps4, I would forget the game exists!
@JaxonH They can't reveal Zelda U at E3, they did that 20 months ago. And if it's going to have a better NX version that's an insult to Wii U owners.
Also, can't be a "Zelda blowout this E3" if they are showing off NX launch software, it will be all about the NX hardware and software, Zelda U/NX will be a side note. Even if they show off NX in early May - like I think they will - E3 will be all about Pikmin 4, SSB NX "Director's Cut", Paper Mario NX and "Nintendo Land 2: amiibo Land" or "amiibo SNAP!" whatever the big amiibo game will be. Preferably anything but another board game. Don't need your league of amiibo hunters to track down Animal Crossing amiibo, those things are everywhere in large quantties. (Though I suppose there could be a hard to find one I missed, so many of them and they all look the same to me.)
Zelda U looked really good on my TV last night - watch an old youtube trailer w/ the boys - and it will likely be a great game, but not great enough to get people focused on it and excited once the NX breaks.
Once again - somewhere between your glass half full optimism and my glass half empty negativity probably lies the truth. Until they announce the game for "holiday 2016" at E3, and then in Sept they delay it until "early 2017", then it will just all be negative.
@Mega-Gazz Yeah, movie, game, being marketed like a holiday Wii U title that nobody wants. I don't get it. Well I do get it, Uncharted 4 is THE PS4 game everyone bought a PS4 for, so that's where the advertising budget will be blown, but I feel really bad for the R&C devs getting dissed. Doesn't look too promising for the R&C bundle I was considering buying. Not spending $400 on a 500GB PS4 2 1/2 years after launch, I'm a gamer, not a collector.
@rjejr Dark Souls 3 >>>>> Uncharted 4. But yea, terrible planning on their part. They should really consider delaying a couple weeks to avoid going head to head with 2 major releases.....
@Mega-Gazz
Dark Souls 3 - Windows, Xbox One, PS4
Ratchet & Clank - PS4
And I really don't have a problem w/ R&C being released close to DS3, is there a big cross-over in fan base between a happy-go-lucky cartoon platformer and a hard-as-nails mature title? U4, the other PS4 exclusive, is a big issue, but ND probably has some say in the release date, the movie dicates the game release for R&C. That doens't mean Sony should just abandon R&C though.
I am hoping after DS3 Sony gets the R&C hype going, it's still just Feb, R&C is April, so they have some time. A whole extra day of time this year.
Of course R&C is a week before U4 in the EU and 2 days before in the UK, that is stupid. STEW-PED.
@rjejr Well I pre-ordered both R&C and DS3, but I can't say how big the crossover is in terms of the whole population . The way I see it while they have different atmosphere in terms of game play they aren't as different. Both are action games, though one is about slow, calculated execution and the other is more button-mash friendly and platformy obviously.
Either way, they could have planned it better.
@rjejr
For one, they delayed the game for a reason. And if you really look at it logically, you'll realize it's because they know new Zelda games take years to make. They know the Wii U is dying and even Zelda U won't change that. Why waste the biggest Zelda of all time on a platform that's being replaced right when Zelda releases? And then NX a won't get a new Zelda game until the end of IT's lifespan, and the cycle of failure continues.
No, they realized they needed to replicate Twilight Princess on Wii. They see that strategy worked- not to say the Wii was a success entirely because of it, but trust me, having a brand new, hotly anticipated Zelda as a launch title is possibly THE best thing they can do to create hype and push sales. They're not gonna throw Zelda U away on the Wii U and launch their comeback system with ports and Pikmin (as much as I love Pikmin, it has a niche fanbase)- that I swear to you here and now. Mark my words- it ain't gonna happen.
They will have alot of attention on NX, but they will also have a lot of attention on their big NX launch title- Zelda NX. trust me- in no way is this game taking a back seat. There's a reason they held off showing it last year- because they want to create awe and wonder alongside its NX announcement.
"going to have a better NX version that's an insult to Wii U owners."
No it's not. Wii U owners get the same game they were promised. That hasn't changed. Was Twilight Princess a "slap in the face to GameCube owners"? Of course not! People were glad and excited the game was also being released on the newest system. And that's the system most bought it for. And who do you think is going to be buying the NX version? Current Wii U owners- probably at least 1/3 of them will upgrade day one. The rest still get their game.
No, a slap in the face would be not releasing on Wii U at all. THAT is a slap in the face. Having another version in no way impacts Wii U owners. If they're jealous, well, maybe they should go to church and learn that it's their own evil eye of envy that's the problem.
These Shenmue screens are so hot, the comments section doesn't want to touch them!
It's funny - in a strange way I'm happy not knowing anything about Shenmue 3 until it's done or very close to it. I've backed it, it's happening, awesome! Now I just want to wait and go in blind like I did the first two times. Still it's nice to see early work on it!
@JaxonH I don't see TP as a slap in the face b/c it was different enough on Wii w/ the motion controls, and back then the majority of Zelda fans probably didn't want the motion controls anyway. And the self proclaimd true fans didn't want to play Link righthanded. But Zelda U was promised back in 2014 for 2015. People may have purchased a Wii U holiday 2014 in expectation of the game. And it will be at least 6 months late, but likely 11 or more. And if they are delaying the U version simply to coincide w/ the NX version, that's Rayman all over again. Then if after that long delay it also gets released on NX, yes I do think that's a slap in the face.
"No, a slap in the face would be not releasing on Wii U at all. THAT is a slap in the face."
No, not releasing on Wii U at all is more like what happens when you drop the soap in the shower of a men's prison. Way beyond a simple "slap in the face" if Zelda U doesn't release on Wii U.
@rjejr
Your comment reflects the belief that Wii U owners are somehow slighted by the game releasing elsewhere, despite it not affecting them one iota. Nintendo has a responsibility to themselves first and foremost- to stay in business. It's their job to sell as many copies of their games and hardware as possible.
I can see it now- NX launch fails, followed by the console, because it had no system sellers at launch and the first Zelda game on NX didn't arrive until 2020.
But hey, at least they made Wii U owners feel all warm and fuzzy by not releasing Zelda U anywhere other than a dead console! They get the game all to themselves, no slap in the face! Nintendo goes bankrupt but hey, they didn't "slap Wii U owners in the face" by denying them bragging rights of Zelda only being on their console.
I'm sorry but that's balogna. Wii U owners still get their game- nothing has changed. But they'd be idiots to not put the biggest game in 5 years on the newest console releasing in the exact same time frame. Screw Wii U owners if an NX port makes them upset. It doesn't take away the game they're getting.
@JaxonH You make sense about needing to make money to stay in business, but here's how I translate a Zelda U and Zelda NX simultaneous release.
People who bought a Wii U for Zelda U are PO'd about the NX release (it's not rational, but a likely emotional response, read a few NL comments) so they don't buy an NX at launch b/c they are mad at Ntinedo overall for the port.
People who bought a Wii U for Zelda U buy Zelda U on the Wii U and don't buy an NX at launch - which you've already heralded as the big NX launch game above so you can't take that back. So people buy Zelda U holiday 2016, put off NX until holiday 2017, which makes for a bad first year for NX, meaning no 3rd party support, meaning NX never recovers.
Know the best way to make money - drop Zelda U, make it Zelda NX, make it a NX launch title then people buy both NX and Zelda NX. NX gets of fto a good start, gets 3rd party support, and becomes a success in the 60m range. (3DS plus Wii U)
Problem is you already said that's a big slap in the face if Zelda U is dropped. But dropping Zelda U is the best way to make NX successful and stay in business.
So they can either make their Wii U fans happy and make Zelda U, but that cuts into NX sales, which you said they need to stay in business, therefore the best business decision would be to drop Zelda U to sell NX.
I just don't think their fan base reacts well to a dual release. Either keep Zelda on Wii U and get something else to launch NX, or a group of somethings like Pikmin 4, Paper Mario, SM Galaxy 3 and amiibo Kingdom; or port Zelda to NX and drop Wii U entirely.
If its Zelda U, don't announce the NX port until E3 2017 for a holiday 2017 release like Sony did w/ all those PS4 remasters. That way Zelda U can sell copies, NX can sell on new software, and then NX has a potential hit for holiday 2017.
I think long term the dual release hurts more than it helps NX.
@rjejr
"They don't buy an NX at launch b/c they are mad at Ntinedo overall for the port."
And if they don't bring it to NX they won't buy one because it has no big games worth buying it for.
You can't move it to NX and remove from Wii U- that's how you fast track to bankruptcy. People will see that they can't trust them to follow through, so how do they know Ninty won't do same thing again on NX? No, that's THE worst thing a company can do.
The people who would "get angry" are vocal minority only. Just like the people who "got angry" over FE Fates- whether because it included the petting feature and they hate it, or because it was removed and they hate censorship, or because they irrationally claim the games were "split apart into half games", it made zero difference. The game sold 5x that of Awakening's launch figures.
Those irrational people would have you believe their little tantrum boycotts out of selfish jealousy will make an impact, but they won't. The masses don't care about stupid stuff like that. The masses see "do I wanna play this awesome new Zelda on Wii U, or an exciting brand new console? Brand new console!"
Lest I remind you the overwhelming majority who, despite Link's right hand and despite motion controls, bought TP on Wii over the GC. People want to play games on a newer console. They just do.
