There's too much smoke now surely? Hot on the heels of Shawn Layden's t-shirt tease and all of the social media hints, NECA Toys' Randy Falk has suggested that Sony's bringing Crash Bandicoot back. Speaking at the New York Toy Fair this weekend, the bearded director touched upon his company's PlayStation line, and said: "Looking at some of [Sony's] other titles, obviously they're bringing Crash Bandicoot back, which is really cool." Are they now?
Falk's company works very closely with PlayStation on the creation of limited edition action figures, so he'd certainly be in the know if the platform holder was looking to produce a Crash Bandicoot toy line. The firm's already working on Uncharted, God of War, and LittleBigPlanet models – and we'd have to assume that a Crash Bandicoot reboot would be ripe for some kind of merchandise. There's a small possibility that he may be mistaken, though?
But at what point do all of the hints, teases, and leaks coalesce as cold hard fact? We're not going to lie, every single time that we write about Crash we get huge traffic, and Sony must be seeing similar metrics internally. In truth, we honestly believe that something is happening behind the scenes. Exactly what that may be remains to be seen, though...
Update (23:45PM GMT): NECA's told GameSpot that the comments were misunderstood: "Randy saw a faked fan-made image right before he came to the show and said that if the game were coming back, we'd love to do figures." Either the toy maker's telling the truth, or it's had to think up with a swift excuse for the slip-up...

I think its inevitable that Sony will resurrect Crash. Looking at the evolution of gaming, 3D platformers followed on from 2D and we have seen a plethora of these. It makes sense that we will start to see 3D platformers return and where better to start than with one of the most popular.
The way Yooka-Laylee got its backing so quickly also would have made Sony take note and the popularity of Ratchet and Clank can't be overlooked either.
Dont tempt me Frodo
Are you sure he doesn't just mean: "Bringing Crash back for a toy line"? Because I wouldn't be surprised if that's all they would do for his 20th anniversary.
Again, I'll keep my excitement chained up until Crash actually makes a comeback. Although I would like some Crash toys. Always wanted some.
They won't even bring their own IP's back(Ape Escape, MediEvil, The Legend of Dragoon, etc) but they will go after other peoples IP's?...
Could they do something similar to the FF7 remake? It would surely be far easier to do with Crash 1 if you just gave it better graphics. I can see that selling well.
Let me set the scene for you guys: It's June 2016, E3 time.
We're waiting in anticipation for Sony's conference to start, Shawn Layden walks out and says "We remain deeply humbled by your support and passion, which has helped make the PlayStation 4 the best place to play...but let's begin. "Our first game tonight sees the return of a much loved mascot for PlayStation" the crowd takes a big gasp of air "I'm truly honoured to reveal his brand new adventure". The lights dim (the audience both in the arena and online have reached a crescendo at this point) the giant screen slowly shows a lush colourful forest, the camera quiclky turns around to show a dust cloud with what sounds like a fight going around. Characters are being thrown towards the screen as there come out of the cloud, finally the action stops. The camera slowly moves towards the cloud, as it disappears and we start seeing the silhouette of a familiar figure, then just like we get the title... Knack 2!!!!
@drpepperdude100 Because Crash was the mascot of the PS1 era and those games still sell very well on PSN. In 2014 the first game in Europe outsold every PS3 game that year except Minecraft. So unlike those other games, there's a big demand from many people.
I really hope its true. I still consider crash to be Sony's unofficial mascot, well in my mind anyway he is. It's sad to see what became of the franchise. Hopefully Sony gets it back where it belongs.
@adf86 I think the people demanding them don't understand how many horrible Crash games there have been since the originals and like MediEvil feel very outdated gameplay wise.
I dont want another Sonic, thanks.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Problem is crash is pretty great and I think most people would like him to make a come back, but is it a big enough deal to warrent so much hype? Not sure myself. Still, bring it on!
Maybe it's not a HUGE franchise like Uncharted...but I think Sony can make a pretty good 'classic' platformer for the fans! And making fans happy it's what makes 'you' a good company! C'mon SONY
@drpepperdude100 That's true but they were developed by Activision what people actually want is either Sony to buy the IP or at least licence it so they can hand pick the developer that will do it right.
Please be CTR!
It's going to happen and I wouldn't be shocked to see Sucker Punch at the helm. That studio has been too quiet and it wouldn't be an awful choice.
@Gamer83 wasn't this made by Naughty Dog originally? I think they would love to be in charge of the new game if that is a thing that is actually happening.
@BAMozzy I backed Yooka Laylee because I've missed the days of 3D platformers on the N64 in particular, add to that seeing these people back together making a new game was too much to resist.
As for Crash I never played much of the originals but I'd definitely get a new entry. Is this when the PS4 starts to channel it's inner PS1? Resident Evil remake-remaster, Resident Evil 2 Remake, FFVII remake, Crash Bandicoot (maybe), Syphon Filter? (one can dream)
@Feena
Yes it was, but for one, Uncharted 4 still needs to be finished and I'm pretty sure Sony wants a The Last of Us 2. I'm also not sure this is an entirely new development. With all the hints I wouldn't be surprised if something has been happening for a while and Sony is just waiting for the right time to say 'here's a new Crash Bandicoot game.' If that's the case, Sucker Punch has been pretty much silent since work finished up on inFamous: Second Son, aside from the First Light expansion which didn't seem like something that would've been a huge undertaking. SP has experience on platformers and knows the modern market as well as Naughty Dog, it would be an interesting choice and something I'd actually like to see. It's probably more likely there's just some timed-exclusive deal and one of Activision's studios is working on it, in which case any hope and any interest I have in a Crash reboot will plummet.
@adf86 As long as Activision isn't developing it I will be excited but if they are I expect trash similar to what they did to the Tony Hawk and Spyro series.
If true, I think they'd give it to either Sanzaru, Insomniac, or Sucker Punch. All three are pretty quiet. The people who worked on the originals aren't at Naughty Dog anymore, and I doubt the people there now have an interest in making a Crash game.
@IceClimbers
It would be crazy to see Insomniac making a Crash game, especially given how on the first two PlayStations, it was ND and Insomniac working as a kind of a two-headed monster to give the PS brand the best platformers outside of Super Mario. If it can't be Sucker Punch, Insomniac would be a studio I'd love to see take on the challenge. Sanzaru is a good studio as well but not sure it's in the same class as ND or Insomniac. If there's a chance for another Sly Cooper though, Sanzaru should get dibs, Thieves in Time was a fun game.
@Gamer83 Agreed. Sanzaru's reputation might have been damaged a bit thanks to Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal (which was the better of the two Sonic Boom games), though both Sonic Boom games were rushed to be released alongside the cartoon. Not really their fault. I believe they're finishing up Sonic Boom Fire & Ice now, which may end up being a decent game.
I'd love to see a new Sly Cooper from them.
@Gamer83 My money would be on Guerilla Cambridge, I know they have two projects on the go. One is obviously RIGS and the other was revealed in a job ad for a "new installment in a multimillion selling franchise" of course it could be a new Killzone title.
@IceClimbers A new Sly game might well depend on how well the Ratchet and Clank movie does. I was reading a interview the director gave and he was asked about the Sly Cooper movie they teased a couple of years ago. It sounds like they have a script but they want the Ratchet movie out of the way first. So if a Sly movie happens then more then likely a game will too.
@adf86
I feel like I'm one of the few who actually likes Guerilla but not sure that would be the right team for a Crash Bandicoot game. Also, I want to see more Killzone on PS4, so hopefully that's what Cambridge has been working on. Shadow Fall wasn't perfect but aside from the later levels, the single player was pretty decent. Multiplayer was very good and supported very nicely, that's one thing Guerilla should be given credit for, regardless of how anybody feels about the studio, it always looks out for its fans.
@adf86 I think the Ratchet movie should do rather well as long as there's enough marketing for the movie. It has the benefit of not releasing anywhere near any other animated movies - Zootopia will be old news by then, and there's nothing after Ratchet until June.
Civil War is the only major movie release around that time, which I don't think will be too much of a problem despite being one of, if not the biggest movies of the year.
@Gamer83 I like guerrilla too, the Killzone games more then Call of Duty ever did made me feel like I was in a brutal warzone. What's worth mentioning is that Cambridge to my knowledge made the Medievil games back in the day and with Killzone Mercenary they proved they could do a good job of someone else's IP.
@IceClimbers I hope it does well too because I think it has potential to actually be pretty decent.
How many characters were in Crash, I missed those games?
My concern is a new Crash game would be either:
1. An NFC2 toy game if Activision was involed, Skylanders started w/ Spyro.
2. Heroes on the Move or PSASBR 2 compilation.
Having not played Crash I'd still be interested in another platformer. Though the list of platforming sequels for me is worse than the originals. I didn't like any of the Jak and Daxter follow-ups and the 2nd set of Spyro games was too dark. I'd have rather a toy game than a gun toting Crash fighting his way thru a dark oppressive world.
@Gamer83 @IceClimbers More than anything I'd like to see a new Sly from Sanzaru (as if it isn't obvious enough, eh?). I still reel from the stink of the cliffhanger from Thieves in Time, and I'll keep reeling until a new game comes out. I do remember that they said there's wasn't any plans for a new game, so I don't know. Probably get something once new news on the Sly film comes out.
I am curious about how Sanzaru would make a Crash game. To be honest, I don't think it would be the same blueprint from ND's Crash, but at the same time I can't really see the wide open collect-a-thon style like Banjo-Kazooie working with Crash.
@Gamer83 @DerMeister Mmm what you guys are saying makes a lot of sense, let's hope it doesn't end up being jus some NFC toy extravaganza...not that I am the biggest Crash Bandicoot fan (Klonoa all the way!) but those games were fun and we need more platform games...miss those.
Added an update to the article.
@get2sammyb Oh I see, he got the call call to go to Kaz's office.
That's your cue people for an appropriate GIF
So the director gets information about the company he works at through fan made fakes??? Is it just me or did they come up with the lamest cover up I have ever heard?
@Gamer83 you do have a point.here.it's happening
LOL THAT UPDATE
He obviously said something he shouldn't have said and is backtracking.
@Neolit Well not quite, there was an article on here a couple of days ago about it, so I kind of got it off that lol
To much teasing for a game that's only important to nostalgic gamers. I dont see this game, if it ever happens, a break out success. Everyone will be like YEA! they brought Crash back then it will be old news within a few weeks. We'll have to have it crammed down our throats like LBP to show Sony has family friendly games.
That excuse.....
As long as it's not in the way they brought back Spyro....a skylanders game, then I'll be all in. I'd even look forward to a HD Remaster of the PSOne and PS2 versions...I'd also like the PSOne and PS2 versions of Spyro The Dragon's to be released, but I'd also like a new Klonoa and Dark Cloud title on PS4 too.
Even without this, I'm pretty sure that Crash's return is going to happen.
Also, @DerMeister, you can never have enough CM Punk.
@Churchy You truly can't.
Somebody in PR is obviously disappointed with their pay because that's the weakest cover-up I've ever read.
