Sony detailed PlayStation 4 firmware update v3.50 this week, revealing its codename – Musashi, for those curious – and the list of features that it will introduce. Chief among them is the ability to turn on friend notifications and appear offline – but it also includes improved party functionality, better event scheduling, support for Remote Play on both the PC and Mac, and the option to livestream to Daily Motion.
Ignoring the latter, it's a strong list of oft-requested features – but we can't shake the feeling that it hasn't exactly been worth the wait. Don't get us wrong, these are all welcome additions – but previous high-profile PS4 firmware updates have launched with headline features like Communities, and there's nothing on that level in system software v3.50. The question is, then: are you satisfied with the features that the platform holder's pledging?
With beta codes set to deploy later today, we want to see your snap reaction to this upcoming update. Fill in our swift survey, and then share your thoughts in the comments section below.

overall i think it's a good update the only thing missing for me is external HDD support
For me, I am 'unhappy' because of the lack of External HDD support. Only the Friends notification and ability to appear offline actually 'may' get used but neither I consider 'essential'. Both are 'nice' features but haven't affected me by their absence so far. I am more likely to turn off friend notifications anyway as I don't like them popping up every time someone comes online. I doubt I will use the 'appear offline' function as I don't care who knows if I am online or not and probably wouldn't take offence if I said I wanted to play 'solo'
What I want and NEED is external HDD support as it is affecting my decisions to buy games and the system I buy for.
I like seeing new features added to the PS4 (assuming it doesn't impact performance like new features on the PS3 did), but there isn't a single feature added this time around that I will ever use or care about.
I really, really, really, do NOT want them to add name change support (other than as a one-time per account thing). I think this will lower the quality of the playstation community. Even putting a price on it won't really accomplish much, not if the price is about the same as a value meal at McDonalds.
External HDD support I am torn on. I think its a bad idea, and I think that it will make developers even lazier, and the last thing I want is to use up one of the TWO USB ports on the PS4 (or, even worse, get an adapter), but I do want the ability to back up games to an external drive on an individual basis, rather than a whole system backup or nothing. (Especially when I want to play the game on more than one PS4, having to download 30-50 GB twice is just annoying)
I do really, really, want Folders and the ability to Delete trophies (and optionally turn off trophies on a per game basis).
Not a single change that I care about, so I am disappointed.
@thedevilsjester I would really like to delete trophies. Guess it's not a big thing, but I cant stand testing a game out, or borrowing from a friend, to have the game's trophy list dragging my completion percentage down...
The system supports 2tb so not sure why people are still wanting the extenal hard drive support. Happy with all the changes. There are no other features I need on the firmware.
Doubt external drove support will ever happen. Wasn't in ps2 or 3 so why 4
The main things I'm hoping for are External HDD and not necessarily folders but a way to pin things were I want on the main bar. It would be cool if we could have screenshots as our backgrounds as well but I can live without it.
@Shellcore Its a different situation for me, I don't borrow or try games out, but I do not buy/play any game that has multiplayer trophies because I will never complete those. If I were able to just delete the trophies, I would buy/play more games, games that I don't really care about completion, that I just want to pick up and play (like Street Fighter) for example. Without having my trophy list polluted with hundreds of partially complete games.
@dryrain 120 GB SSD hard disks are not so expensive now. I'd like to move on an external SSD HD the game I'm currently playing to improve loading time and general performance.
@dryrain because with external support you can pretty much have UNLIMITED space for games and with EVERY game requiring a install (and getting bigger with updates and DLC for example the witcher 3 including updates is over 50GB) even a 2TB HDD might not be enough room
Would love external HDD support, but not holding out too much hope really. Folders would be useful, but not sure why it's quite so popular in the poll? Overall I am happy with the latest firmware update.
@dryrain The maximum size a PS4 can (at the moment) have is 2TB. My XB1 has 5.5TB because I plugged a 5TB external HDD into it. I could also add another 5TB if I want. I currently have all games/patches/DLC on my external and keep my internal for OS. It took seconds to plug in my External HDD and format it.
Not only would I need to buy an internal HDD (which actually costs more per TB), I would probably have to buy an external USB storage device to download the OS and install that to the 'new' internal. It also takes a lot longer to replace the internal HDD and then I am also left with a 500GGB internal HDD that has NO use to me. IF I have as many games on my PS4 this gen, even a 2TB drive will be full too - especially IF/When IGC games appeal.
My PS4 HDD is full and I already have to juggle games around and I have less than half the number of games as my XB1. My XB1 has more than 10x the storage for just £100 and could easily be upgraded further.
Overall External HDD support is quicker, cheaper, larger and easier so is far superior a solution.
@Shellcore I see what you are thinking but i also think the troll moves. Someone hacks you hey where are all my trophies..... I would like to delete the 1 % trophies though that would clean up my trophylist
@thedevilsjester Or if they split up the online trophies would be nice.
@andreoni79 USB is the speed bottleneck here. Overall an external drive would be slower than internal, which could be a problem for continuous streamloading games. That's a problem worth staying away from. Really, swapping a 2TB drive is very easy.
I'm happy with it-ish. I love the features, but my gripe is that some of these should have been available at launch, not over 2 years later. We should be seeing better features that weren't already on the PS3 now.
@Flaming_Kaiser Oh absolutely. If online trophies were separate from the core trophies (like DLC is) then I would have no need for a delete trophies option; but this option would have to be retroactive.
@Kupobo Steaming to DailyMotion, PC and Mac remote play, and parties with event scheduling, the three most notable features in this update (the appear offline and friend notification being small extras), were not on the PS3 in any way shape or form. I get your gripe, there are serious features that should be addressed, like Pinning or Folders, so getting these mostly useless tidbits is a bit insulting, but its not like they are trying to play catch up with the PS3, like you insinuate. The continue to add lots of new features and functionality that never existed on the PS3.
folders and external hd support are the only 2 updates I really care about... However folders is the one that puzzles me the most... really what's so difficult about implementing folders? could anyone have believed it before launch that PS4 will launch without folder support and that 2+ years after we would still be waiting for the folders?
i will never use any of those features.... so, meh?
@Biolan except both the Xbox One and Wii U support external HD.. if they can figure this out why not Sony
External Hardrive 500gb is starting to get unmanagable and switching HD is a ball ache
The update isn't even Live yet so it's too early to vote.
So I was chosen. But it says that Remote Play does not work at all in the beta. I may not take part in it...
Folders and most of all UI organisation is what I miss the most.
Lovely pink room Sammy;)
@BAMozzy I'm unhappy with it also. If someone contacts me and I don't want to play with them I just ignore it. It can be annoying to get a notification when a friend is online but it's not essential to have the feature to seem offline. I want folders and wallpapers I can customize. It's all about having control of my UI like I can with my MAC.
THE only thing I have found useful with Sony updates is the resume play. All the other SH$? I can careless about. Sony doesn't seem to care what the community wants.
I don't need the external HDD since I just added 2 TB.of internal storage which wasn't hard to do. But I can see others wanting to add HD from a external approach.
Nice update, but I'm holding my breath for external hardrive support. I am needing it bad, game updates are chewing up my space, and PS Plus is often a coin toss of what I need to delete. I've looked at getting one of the current options, bit don't want to run the risk of bricking my beloved PS4
Very unhappy, though to be fair I guess I shouldn't be. It's completely unreasonable to expect external HD support in 2016, even if the freaking Wii U has it.
I like remote play to pc. Only one TV in the house so that could be very useful.
I won't be satisfied until they finally give me external HDD support.
I hope it comes to europe soon
I was lookin forward to the "offline Status" for like ever since LOL
its so annoyin to get notifications and messages from friends when playin Im so glad I can finally turn this off ^^
Some people will never be happy with these updates. At least we're getting them, slowly but surely.
Why the fascination for folders when everything is in Library, to save a few seconds scrolling down looking for what you want?
It seems that most people here who aren't happy are Americans
When will they ever listen and add psn name changes. Goodness I'm happy about all these new features but psn name changes can't be forgotten on ps4 too, not like on ps3.
