With the good news out of the way, it's time for some bad news to filter out. PlayStation VR will be $399.99 at launch as reported earlier this evening – but it won't come with a PlayStation Camera. This is a required component, so it's strange that Sony's not bundling it. Fortunately, you can pick up a camera for less than $50 these days.
You'll also need to supply your own PlayStation Move controllers, as they won't be bundled with the hardware either. The concern here is that not including them in the box means that the user base will instantly be split, meaning that developers will be unlikely to design their games with the motion controllers in mind. A bit of a shame.
Here's an image of everything that you will get in the box. Lots of cables, basically:

There were two types of move controller, one with the ball at the top and one with a d-pad. My question is, do I need two of the same move controllers or one of each?
Jesus.... Dropping the Ball on this one. Thank god for having one move controller but i need to buy a second dildo uugh i mean move right?
What are all those cables? I thought that it was obvious that this thing was wireless...
Makes sense that Sony or retailers will make bundles with the camera or the move.
@KratosMD Golem (for example) looks like it requires the Move controller. I am sure some games that are more complex will need the DS4. You will still need a headset if you want the full effect, Camera and Move to play all games otherwise £350 buys you a 'screen' for your PS4.
@belmont It was never wireless, those cables are HDMIs USBs and cables for the processor box.
@KratosMD I'm sure it will mate.
I am surprised that the camera won't be bundled, hopefully if enough people kick up a fuss they will do SKU for it.
Also Move controllers you can get pretty cheaply now anyway.
I bet retailers will suddenly bump the price up on the Camera now that it has some functionality and purpose!
This is what might end up being the deal-breaker for me. The added cost will bring the Australian version to around $630. Also, it'll probably end up being closer to $750 for people who don't own Move controllers already. For comparison, the 20gb PS3 originally launched at around $800 in Australia, which was considered a ridiculous price.
With all that said, VIVE is an absolutely preposterous $1400 over here, so I guess PSVR still represents a pretty damn good deal. I will be very interested to see how this all plays out.
(Also, I would be remiss to not mention that Australia and Canada seem to be the only two countries that haven't been gouged in the conversion from the US price.)
Haha, I bought a sh*tload of move controllers for next to nothing the other day because I was anticipating this. I also bought about 40 of those Duracell charging stations, which will come in really handy now. I'd suggest you stuck up now, cause prices will certainly skyrocket once the release date approaches.
Soooo....
What we have is the following. A wired headset for $400 that....basically does the Off-TV Play of the Wii U Gamepad only via cable and strapped to your skull, and the additional cost of needing a PSCamera and Move Controllers for what seems like a load of games (Otherwise why have a screen on your skull if you can just use a controller) and Sony's hilarious history of failing to market things.
That price point and userbase split isn't a good thing though...oh well.
Actually glad, rather use the ds4 over the waggle controllers any day. This tells me that the move controllers trolleys are not required, and imo that is a plus as most people have moved on from waving their hands around to game. Glad I got that camera last year tho!
Hmm, I don't have Move controllers, or a camera. So, basically $150-200 extra I'll need to spend in addition to the $400.
If NX releases this year I'll probably hold off on this until the first price drop (or the following Christmas). I certainly don't want to shell out $1000 on two new platforms this Christmas.
@adf86 Thanks for clarifying this. Still makes no sense to me that this thing is not wireless. Remote play on the Vita works without cables... Wii U off TV works without cables.
Move costs about 25 euros here, the Navigator is sold out while the camera goes for 46 euros.
@belmont Was never going to be wireless due to latency.
@JaxonH
Outside of the fact that I think VR gaming will be mostly a gimmick with shoddy software (just my opinion), I'm with you...........I would rather use that money for the Nintendo NX.
@KratosMD In this official trailer, several games are seen using the DS4 although 1 is using 2 move controllers. I know Golem uses a Move controller. If you are interested in being able to play every VR game and get the full effect (including sound) then you will need to have (or buy) 2 Move controllers, A stereo/surround sound headset and the camera on top of the VR headset. You will have access to Playroom VR for free but don't know if you will need to buy game(s) on top of that too.

@sub12
I mean don't get me wrong, I'm definitely interested, but
A) NX will be $100-200 cheaper (I don't have Move controllers or camera)
B) there are too many games I simply cannot miss with Nintendo
C) want to wait and see how strong VR gets supported, and game quality.
I'm the kind of person that has to own everything so I do plan on getting both of them it's just that I don't think I could prioritize this over a new mainline console with guaranteed games that I know I love. Plus this will give me time, like I said, to make sure this doesn't end up like the Vita. But if it releases and it's just so awesome that I absolutely have to have one right away then I may just give in and buy both this year. We'll see how it goes.
PlayStation move controllers now have a purpose again
It's got a whiff of Vita and memory cards, this. The Vita seemed like a pretty good deal... until you factored in the memory cards and then it got a bit soured. Same with this and the camera. Hmmmm.
@belmont Having wireless would have added to the price hugely, need to look at it as the first wave of new tech.
@get2sammyb I already own one move controller, the one with the ball. Do I need a second one or do I need the navigation controller. I'm guessing it's a good idea to buy them now before the prices go up.
@KratosMD Its similar in essence to why the PS4 seemed a lot cheaper than the XB1 at launch because of the exclusion of the camera. If you included that in the price, the difference wasn't that great and in truth Kinect, for all the criticism it gets, is still a better piece of tech than the camera is.
Selling things separately though is that unusual or specific to Sony when you want to appear a LOT cheaper than the competition. In some ways though that can work for you as well. Knowing that you need these additional bits can enable people to buy as and when. You could buy these in readiness for launch meaning that your final outlay is not that great compared to buying it all (like with HTC Vive's set up - that is technically superior and wireless). The games you may be interested in at launch may not require Move so you may only need the Camera. At a later date, can buy Move controllers as and when the need arises.
This isn't good at all. Make 2 bundles one for people coming to this fresh, the other for people with move controllers.
Look at all those wires, ridiculous.
@blakey78 Two of the glowing ball types. The d-pad one you refer to was just a more comfortable alternative to using the left side of a regular Dual Shock. It had no motion control in and of itself.
@RawShark thanks for clearing that up, I can go ahead and order one now
@belmont It was never going to be wireless for a number of reasons. Battery life and the main one being latency, something Sony has been trying to reduce.
@KratosMD You can play Rigs, Eve, DriveClub etc with the DS4
There's rumours going around that Shu Yoshida has said that PSVR WILL have a bundle with the camera included but don't take my word for it yet.
Edited: Right Shu has indeed said this. So far it's only confirmed for NA though. He said they haven't included it with every bundle because "many people already have the camera" I do remember that they exceeded demand early on when PS4 launched because of people wanting to stream.
As much as I am looking forward to PSVR, im going to wait for better games and a bundle deal that is reduced. No way am I paying £350 for the headset, £40+ for the camera which will be hard to find pre owned and then whatever the Move controllers cost.
When purchased separately and with a couple of games you're looking at the best part of £500.
I payed £350 for my PS4 at launch and that came with a game.
I bought the camera ages ago, pretty much a waste of time until VR, I also bought move controllers ages ago waiting for VR, I'll probably need another one of the move controllers though I think.
I can see why the move controllers aren't bundled but the lack of a camera baffles me. I suspect as we get closer to launch there will be more expensive bundles and that this is more a marketing ploy to get that price point out there.
You can get ps move controllers at gamestop used for $5.
I'll be picking up a camera today. PS move controllers only if I can pick up 2 for under £40. I will be playing the majority of the games with the DS4,but I don't really want to miss out on the full VR experience.
It does fracture the release date and pricing. It also means that everyone should buy one pretty quickly before the price sky rockets for a camera.
I get the Vita vibe on this. They should probably offer up a pre-order bundle with all additional bits and bobs needed.
