@Herculean I appreciate you, thanks for the thought - I agree it's not a simple time, and a lot of information is storming around us like a hurricane, but I still disagree (respectfully) on how Nintendo handled their messaging following the Direct. They have hundreds if not thousands of employees as a corp to carefully prepare and coordinate these marketing challenges for the public to understand. I do not give them a pass whatsoever, and I didn't do so with Sony and Microsoft during Covid except for their reasons on supply constraints.

For pricing, I don't think they were trying to be clear, given that the console itself was not priced in their presentation, but after the fact. The games I was not expecting to have shown given the nature of their variation between titles and genre, that's common for a system presentation... but only a few regions listed with values higher than what we thought they would be (unless you were expecting 80 US for some games)? This should have been clarified, especially for digital versions since tariffs don't affect them directly at all, and with very little impact in an indirect sense. This is greed with a touch of business maneuvering so as not to push consumers too far away by pricing them out. In other words, I think this pricing would have been the case regardless of Trump given rising development costs. Sony and Microsoft could as easily use this justification for price increases given their titles are generally higher in production value than Nintendo's, and they would have done so I think without waiting for "Nintendo to do it first" as people online are arguing. Regardless, neither of them have announced 80$ games, and Nintendo has. It's hubris to me, not Orange Man.

As for said Orange Man, there's no doubt he's a tyrant who's messing things up further. What is in process right now with the paused US preorders is an extension of his madness. He's a adjective-expletive noun-expletive who demonstrates ego-untethered with a power undeserved given that the American populace's desires are widely in contrast to his behavior when examined. Please believe me when I say I've no intention to defend him, but this problem we're discussing is bigger than him and the evidence to me demonstrates that the high cost of the initial reveal by Nintendo to us fans was a product of profit motive, not Trump - he's just going to make it worse, especially for Americans.

I can go further into this if you like, but I don't want to appear like I'm gish-galloping at your expense lol. You're in good faith, I've seen your other comments, and I get where you're coming from. My exhaustion isn't just towards Trump, his tariffs, Nintendo, or corporate greed, but primarily something else (hint: it begins with a "C" and exists as an economic system prized by Westerners). But I am open-minded to this situation that's unfolding, and can accept correction when mistaken.

Enjoy your weekend, and as I mentioned above, enjoy the hype if you're still looking forward to Switch 2 games!

Here's my Switch 2 Direct wishlist. As for the console, I will be boycotting/protesting it for many years.

I've got a massive PS5/PS4 game backlog, I'm in no hurry to inflate my already giant collection.

I also refuse to pay for $80+ Switch 2 games, that's just plain corporate greed in my opinion.

i think the design is mid (mostly all black and too serious looking, and no colorful buttons), and the price is overpriced. i wish nintendo would shake up their ips with their newest machine instead of making yet another generation of games beat by beat and playing it safe. i think the last time they really tried something different with their IPs was the gamecube & wii era. give us another f-zero with semi-realistic or full realistic graphics, give us a new warhawk like starfox game with multiplayer , make another dark zelda game like twilight princess and majoras mask, add some more depth and mechanics to the new mario kart maybe make it more bike focused again or two partners like double dash, take smash bros in a new direction and reboot it, make a live service pokémon with final fantasy like graphics, i could go on

@Enriesto Thanks for that post. Even though are opinions differ, I think there's more we agree than disagree on, though. I might just not feel the same exhaustion or frustration, though.

I play my video games, enjoy my time and have always felt like I get more than my money's worth. That's been that way since 19xx and I don't fear that's going to change with the Switch 2.

It still blows my mind how expensive Switch 2 is here but the pricing of games is even worse. €90 for Mario Kart? Absolutely insane. And the thing is that Nintendo games never get discounted. The digital versions do go on sale for at most 33 percent discount. So unless second-hand copies are cheaper than that, then I might go digital with Switch 2.

This also makes me appreciate subscription services like PS+ and Game Pass more as you save so much money with them. I honestly don't feel a rush with getting a Switch 2 as I have so much I want to play on these services, not to mention my vast backlog. So I'll happily hold off on getting one until it's cheaper. There aren't many games exclusive to it that I feel a need to play on day one. I just need to wait to play Kirby and Tears of the Kingdom until I get a Switch 2 in order to play the upgraded versions. Same with Metroid Prime 4, i.e. I'd rather play it on Switch 2 down the line.

@nomither6 In general I agree that Nintendo is too safe with their franchises nowadays, but I think both Mario Kart World and Bananza represent interesting evolutions to be honest.
I think what I've seen from MKW so far is more daring than the whole of Mario Kart Double Dash. The two drivers was more of a gimmick to me than the free roaming mode and battle royale mode, and the character designs are different as well from the last few games.

On the other hand I'm not at all hyped for Metroid Prime 4 for the reason of it looking like a somewhat derivative game based on the trailers.

Such a weird space here that Nintendo are in. It was always inevitable that game prices were going to escalate.... but I would have wagered largely that GTAVI would have been the 'trend-setter' and possibly the first ~100 £GBP game. I certainly wouldn't have pegged MK being the pioneer of that price-point (or close to)

I suppose though, when you look at the week-by-week sales charts for physical games - both MK8 and GTAV have sat in those top10 lists for pretty much their entire existences... no small feat considering their ages, and various iterations of release.

I actually think the hardware price of Switch2 is fine, and kind of in line with the Steamdeck LCD variants at launch. Its the peripherals and software that I take contestation with. But... The NSO+Expansion subscription is looking like a better deal, now offering Gamecube titles and also free-S1->S2 upgrades for games (BOTW/TOTK) alongside existing legacy contact, online play, cloud etc.

The third party launch/support has been promised, with Fromsoft / Capcom / CDPR all coming to the table. I must say though that the 1st party launch titles (or 'title' singular?! MKW...) is pretty lacking. I'm not the biggest MK fan, and also MP4 has me a bit cold considering it will be cross-gen... and then not taking full advantage of the new hardware.

I was frothing at the prospect of an exclusive(!!!) FromSoft title on Switch, notwithstanding its likeness to the almighty Bloodborne... until it transpired to be a PvPvE title. Miyaziki directing has regained some interest (unlike Nightreign, which he is distanced from?) but multiplayer is not what I go to Fromsoft for.

I actually have the S2 on pre-order, and unless something drastic transpires I intend to proceed with it. Its a shame that Nintendo have hit the consumers so heavily with this pricing strategy, and that the narrative is so laser-focussed on the negative connotations with such an agressive stance...... I think there is a ton to love about the S2 - and hope that its success can prevail, irrespective of upset consumers.

@CJD87 nintendo hardly gets any criticisms which is why they do what they do and then people give them a pass for it

@Herculean i saw some MKW gameplay & i think they could still do so much more. Also what do you mean “derivative” with metroid prime 4?

nomither6

CJD87

@nomither6 I'd agree to an extent.... although one publisher would always need to 'be first' in setting the new industry standard for overpriced games, I just always thought that GTA VI would be the poster child!

But you're right in that if Microsoft/Sony had floated their latest exclusive at ~80 $USD there would have been uproar!

CJD87

Herculean

@nomither6 I completely agree they can do more.

Derivative as in: to me Prime 4 seems to be just more Prime, without much new to it. I think it's a perfect example of where Nintendo should have taken more risk.

@CJD87 I dunno, I've seen nothing but moaning and "I'll just buy a Steam deck" about the price of everything in the Switch 2 ecosystem.

I would also say Prime 4 is taking full advantage of the new hardware. 4K 60fps with HDR, or 1080p 120fps with HDR, full automatic mouse mode detection and full support. Don't think you can get much more than that short of using the microphone for talking to NPCs

@Haruki_NLI Yea, I'm quite shocked about the reception. It used to feel like I was more critical about Nintendo than your average fan, but with Switch 2's announcement, it seems the other way around. I'm quite high on the console, as excited as I was for PS5, but I hear so many complaints.

Nintendo really dropped the ball with Switch 2 in my view. I did realise yesterday that I will inevitably get one because I love Xenoblade and (open world) Zelda too much but as they are not launch titles I can happily wait to see what happens.

Looks like a good console, but $80 games, especially a bunch of old games that are Switch ports is outrageous. I already have real issues with either the way Nintendo doesn’t price drop games. Nintendo have just snatched defeat from the jaws of victory here.

Haruki_NLI

@Herculean I'm not sure what people wanted.

They wanted games on Switch to not all be full price because some weren't worth it. Now Nintendo announces variable pricing for Switch 2, some games at $80, some at $70, some will be less, like on Switch where some were $40 for instance, and now people just want all games to be the same price and not varied?

And everyone wanted a more powerful feature rich Switch to compete with modern hardware and now they have it it's too expensive? Well what did people expect? It ain't gonna come out at $300 and match higher end PC Handhelds like it seems to be.

I was happy with the price of the hardware for what it is, I thought it'd be more expensive given it's features, and game pricing being variable is great.

I guess everyone just wants everything as cheap as possible.

@Haruki_NLI Well, no, come on. People don't want $70 and $80 games. Especially when Nintendo's titles aren't as expensive to develop as stuff you'd see from, say, Sony's developers. It just comes off as short-sighted and greedy, especially considering these games probably won't go on sale.

Then they're nickel and diming for upgrades, like Sony did.

And charging particularly exorbitant prices for physical.

I think if the console itself cost what it does and there were mostly just $60 and $70 games, this negativity wouldn't exist.

Ugh. Men.

@Haruki_NLI I’m not exactly against prices for games going up, and I think I’m happy with the price of the device, for me it’s just that charging for the feature demo feels like a really crappy move. If they are trying to make a buck there, where else are they pulling the wool over my eyes?
