Promising PlayStation 4 action title Nioh is launching later this year, but if you've been keeping up with the news, you'll know that a tough looking demo is due out today on Sony's home console. Featuring a gameplay segment that sees you go up against sword-wielding samurai and grizzly demons, you can download the demo right now from the European PlayStation Store. We assume that it'll go live in North America once the clocks strike midnight, but we're not making any promises.
The sneak peek is only available until the 5th May, so if you're eager to test your skills, you'll want to grab it sooner rather than later. Oh, and those who have what it takes to clear a stage will gain access to some downloadable content in the full game - not bad, eh? What's more, we'll be penning our own thoughts once we've given it a good kicking, so do keep a look out for that later this week.
Will you be giving this a go? Are you looking forward to the finished release? Carefully watch your opponent in the comments section below.

Its like if combined dark souls with shinobi.
Unfortunately i would emplore everybody not to waste their time downloading this demo. Ps2 graphics, horrible erratic twitchy gameplay camera and the frame rate is f##king abysmal . Alpha or not this game is absolute garbage. If anybody says anything positive about this demo then i will be forced to direspect their opinion immediately ! Embarrassing game. For the studio.
yes i thought it was really dreadful as well.
@Bazza78 is it really that bad?? The last gameplay trailer I saw looked pretty damn good and promising ... gotta try the demo if it is available in europe as well
@consolfreak1982 He is GREATLY exaggerating. The frame rate is fine. The graphics aren't great but they aren't PS2 graphics. The camera isn't bad either. I honestly don't know what he played to be honest. It's available for Europe now.
The gameplay feels similar to Dark Souls, but more fast paced. It has some subtleties to make it seem pretty different actually. It is incredibly hard; if you're reckless you can get instant killed. There are three stances for every weapon as well which adds variation in the combat.
It's free give it a try. I really really like it actually.
Edit: And after playing it to the end the graphics not only don't look bad. They look pretty great. Especially once you get to an area with rain. Considering this is an Alpha build the finished product is sure to be phenomenal.
Almost forgot this was happening! Will definitely give it a go.
wow this game is bad, as in aweful
Ugh, similar to Dark Souls in gameply?
I'll try it.
After beating it I have to say. This game is going to be great. Every blow feels satisfying, every battle feels tense, every victory feels like you could have been a hairs breath away from death. I can't wait for the release!
Its like Dark Souls, meets Ninja Gaiden, meets Diablo.
@ApostateMage Think more Ninja Gaiden or Way of the Samurai. I tried going into this game playing like I would in Dark Souls. I got murdered by the very first guy... The combat system is much more intricate; you really need to capitalize on the enemies' momentum or lack thereof. You can see their health and stamina to help you suss out when to strike, and you get three stances that can be switched at will to allow you to press your advantage. It takes a little while to get used to it, but once you start to fighting is very fun and satisfying.
@GraveLordXD. I'm pretty sure that guy is either trolling or really really horrible at the game. This game is incredibly brutal. Do not try and play like Dark Souls you will lose your stamina get tired and then hit for like 1000 damage.
If I can give you one tip and one tip only it would be to change your armor as soon as you can. At least in the alpha all of your armor is from drops so you'll have to kill some guys or fight some revenants to get better gear. The starting gear only has 1 defense, so the first 45 mins are test of survival. You probably won't though.
I couldn't even pick up the weapon.
Gonna give this a try tomorrow.
@Constable_ " frame rate is fine" yes if 15 fps is your thing!
@Dan_ozzzy189 "i couldnt even pick up a weapon" That is because the inventory setting and the menu's are very poorly implemented .
Heard very mixed reactions to this to the point where I need to take a look myself to form my own opinion.
@Constable_What i'm not a "troll" or "really bad at the game". I'm just really unimpressed by it, is that ok with you? There is no need to start calling me names, just because my opinion differs from your own.
This was Shuhei's most anticipated game of 2016. If it really is that bad then his gonna be disappointed.:/ That said, I'm sure they'll work out the issues before the game releases. I hope to try the demo tomorrow once its available in US's PSN Store.
The game is fun! But it's so freaking brutal...when you get gangbanged by 3 dudes it's harder than any dark souls boss xD
This is another example of a game that should run a lot better than it does... we don't need a PS4k, we need better optimization. It's nice that they at least have the option for Movie Mode (resolution) or Action Mode (frame rate). It's absolutely playable though. Action mode seems to be around 60fps with decent enough resolution.
Anyways, it's an interesting game. It does feel extremely ridged, but the depth of the combat system is promising. After the demo, I'm sure I'd pick it up at launch, but I'll definitely keep my eye out for reviews.
@Bazza78 @shadowman1
Look mates if you are no good don't be a baby and crack down on the game for more reason. And the game is not that terrible looking for a alpha. And PS2 quality sell me your PS2 if it makes games look that good, or will I just give you my glasses.
In my download queue but dark souls 3
I can't find the demo, even searching the name...
@sonicmeerkat Should be avalaible in NA tomorrow.
@WanderingBullet Thanks, thought it would have just been in the store update
@sonicmeerkat It should be out in NA now, has been for a few hours as far as I'm aware.
@Bazza78 It is not 15 FPS. Get a PC if you care that much. You must be trolling. Jog on.
Also I don't care at all about your opinion. Which is why I didn't reply to you. Do your self a favor and terminate this conversation; I have zero interest in continuing it after this reply.
@GraveLordXD The areas are seperated into levels. They seems to be smaller than Dark Souls levels. There are branching paths but in the first level the one other path opens a shortcut to the first shrine. I would say it isn't on par with Dark Souls there. I'm guessing that the levels get more complex as you progress through the game, but I've only seen two in the Alpha.
It is a different feeling game than other Souls-likes. It'll be more linear like Ninja Gaiden if had to guess.
@Constable_What The feeling is mutual . I sincerely hope that you stub your toe. In the near future =) Now Jog off!
@Flaming_Kaiser maybe ps2 game was abit harsh, but judging by the alpha then this game is a very unimpressive game visually by ps4's standards imo,i mean the main character animation is the most rigid an robotic thing i've ever seen! i'ts only my opinion, but i've been playing witcher 3 and darksouls 3 so maybe i was expecting too much from Nioh.
Oh and for all the guys flaming me for criticizing the games frame rate and graphics, and saying things like "shut up the frame rate is fine" then why the bloody hell is there a option to stabilize frame rate over resolution and vice versa? IE the game cant give you one thing without taking away from another. Hmmmmmmmmmm? "Because it's a alpha" Hmmmmm? The game has medoirce graphics and/or terrible performance end of story.
@Bazza78 You're honestly pathetic. I thought you should know. End of story.
@Constable_What are you still going name calling? Jog on and dont ever speak to me again you miserable donger.Bloodborne>darksouls>witcher>...........Ninja gaiden onimusha >>>>>> Nioh. Onimusha was ps2. And is still a more refined than Nioh in 2016.
@Bazza78 I love how you chastise me for name calling and then immediately begin name calling yourself. I'll talk to whom ever I wish as well; this may come as quite a shock to you but this is an open comments section where anyone can reply to anyone. Try to understand, I know it may be hard for you.
You made the mistake of replying to me when I didn't even mention you by name while I was having a constructive conversation with a different user. I'm afraid you cannot just weasel your way in and out of conversations, where you were not even welcome in the first place, so easily.
Furthermore you are a bellend polishing cheese eating mongolian snot gobbling skirt wearing nancy-boy. Also your gran is a goth. I wish you well in your day, and will promptly reply to you when I am able if you so choose to continue our little conversation. Stimulating as it is.
@Bazza78 Quit editing your posts as well you jackanape... No one cares about the taste you think you have. Wagging your finger to house music from '05 thinking it's a new tune. We get it you have a computer and you exist have a bloody medal.
This is just too fun!
@Bazza78 @Constable_What That's enought both of you if you guys don't knock it off you both will be receiving a little vacation from the site. Consider this a warning.
@Tasuki fair comment . Apparently i'm not allowed to find flaws with the Nioh demo. And express my opinion.@ tasuki how did you let this guy abuse me without banning him? He's making comments about my grandma for christ sake.
@Tasuki B-b-bu-. No I knew I was skirting the line. I appreciate the warning and will knock it off like you said. Good on you.
@Bazza78 And you are just as guilty of insulting him. Just cause you edit your comments after you post them doesn't mean anything. Just cause he insulted you first doesn't give you the right to insult him back. I don't play these Kindergarten well he started it games. If someone insults you be the bigger man.
"bellend polishing, cheese eating Mongolian " in american "homosexual retard" and he infferred i was a "skirt wearing nancy boy" . My insults Didn't get anywhere near his accusations.
I guess I'll be the bigger man and, or at the very least a proud graduate of Kindergarten, and say I'm sorry.
I apologize for name calling and anyone offended by said name calling.
I apologize for playing my part in wasting @Tasuki's time with this nonsense.
I apologize to anyone offended by my remarks.
Let's all just be done with this and put it behind us, yeah? I honestly didn't mean anything by what I said it's how I talk with my mates. I'll try harder than my best to refrain from using coarse language of any sort. I thank everyone reading this for their patience and understanding regarding this unfortunate matter.
Hope everyone has a lovely rest of their day. No hard feelings yeah? All's well that ends well.
@Constable_What =) this victory is for my nan.
Fair enough. Let's just not derail the comment section anymore and stick to the article.
Thanks
@Bazza78 Good to see you maturing at a steady clip Bazza. Stay classy... /s
@Constable_What thanks man my nan is sooo happy, even though she sadly passed away 15 years ago.
@consolfreak1982 Well i love it's hard but great fun and difficult. For me it's Demon Souls in the East and a 100% sale.
@ApostateMage Go download it i love it can't understand the Demon Souls in the East with a little bit of Diablo loot.
Pretty good game very intrested in this, look's and run's fine for me. Main guy look's like Geralt of Riveria but the combat is nuffink like TW3 (which sucked toooo easy) the combat here is brutal, just the kinda combat I love.
The game is INCREDIBLE. The demo sold me on it.
