DOOM's out in just a couple of days on PlayStation 4, so it's nice of Bethesda to release some new gameplay footage while we sit here waiting for our review copy to arrive. Snark aside, we're hoping that the shooter's single player campaign is up to snuff, because what we've seen of it so far has looked promising.
In the game's latest trailer, members of the development team go over how you can customise your demon slaying experience. You can collect and mod weapons, power your character up in different ways, and generally just tweak your playstyle as you progress. More than ever, we're loving the look of the so-called glory kills, which are essentially deadly, contextual melee attacks that add some real brutality into the mix.

After playing the MP Beta my expectations have greatly diminished for this game. If it has a great single player I'm in but with many sites not even getting review copies until the day before or the day of I will be taking a big wait & see.
FPS games often have sub par campaigns so I wouldn't be surprised if it goes with the flow. But if I do get it eventually, I'll hope for a great campaign.
I don't get Bethesda's justification for holding back review copies. I mean ok, they say MP is a big part of the experience and want reviewers to see that once the servers are turned on, but no site is going to publish a full review and a score on just SP alone anyway. Just give reviewers the time to play through the SP and get that bit out of the way so they can then focus on the MP side of things, instead of having to potentially rush through both so they can get their review out within a decent timeframe post-launch.
Starting to get a little worried. What I didn't want was a complicated upgrade systems and collectables. I just wanted the classic Doom weapon set and some monsters. All this focus on the melee kills as well, we all know we'l grow tired of them after seeing them 10-20 times. Will probably wait till this ones on sale.
Having seen one or two streaming on Live From Playstation, the general comments were it was a short single player campaign, which is worrying, but I guess i'll wait for a review then sale tbh.
@Gatatog I totally agree. Having less time to review something can likely decrease the quality of a game's reviews, I feel kinda bad for the reviewers to having rush to through it. It kinda makes me slightly worried that Bethesda are doing this for a different reason which hopefully isn't the case.
That's a good trailer, makes the game look promising. I'm definitely interested but yeah, still going to wait on those reviews.
Doom is a classic, the mother of modern fps, and I loved back in the days...but to me it'll always be dated, and any game tha follows the same pattern (as a sequel usually do) it'll be a piece from a bygone era.
@SoakedCarrot Reviewing video games for a living isn't something good I would feel bad about, no matter how rushed some of them are. LOL
@Dreamcaster-X Same here.
The Beta was abysmal.
n.I.c.e d.o.o.m for the glory
I am so excited for a new DOOM game. Honestly, I put well over 100 hours into the XBLA version of DOOM just because I could play with my buddies online. I also have DOOM socks, and every variant of the DOOM Marine funko pop (so far!).
Me Likey DOOM~~~
@Scollurio not in everbody's opinion , imo the beta was great.
@Bazza78
I really enjoyed the beta as well.
@sub12agree, old school mixed with mordern mechanics , i foooooking loved the beta.
I really wasn't impressed by the MP Beta and thought it was a very dated concept but with modern visuals. The gory 'glory kills' looked great but wore thin after a very short time.
I can't say the campaign is exciting me either. I know it has a 'story' but you have to look for it. It doesn't seem as 'Story' driven as Doom 3 though. So far it seems like an average 'indie/80's' game wrapped up in AAA modern visuals - quite vacuous - clear one level and move on to the next and repeat.
Doesn't look like its tried to re-invent itself for the modern generation - like Wolfenstein has.
@BAMozzy
I think that's the point, bring back the old PC FPS style, you know, where your moving three times faster than a normal human being and the kill count goes into the hundreds quite quickly.
Nobody wants a story driven Doom 3 like experince, it's the black sheep of the franchise for a reason.
Simplicity + Speed + Kill Count......that's what made games like Quake 1/2/3, Unreal, UT, Sin, etc, great.
@Speedy67 wolfenstein had a superb single player campaign. This is from the same folks so it may well be superb. Not cool holding back review copies though.
@sub12 Not EVERTONE hated Doom 3 - I bought it twice - the original Steelbook version and the BFG remaster on last gen. Not EVERYONE wants vacuous 80's style games - and some do want a story driven Doom experience! Doom 3 is NOT the black sheep of the franchise - its different because they tried to update it from the meaningless drivel it was before - something that wouldn't have worked as well as it did in the first two games.
There is a reason that modern games work so much better - including MP. Not everyone wants the 'old school' arena shooters but something with a bit more brains to it. Time will tell but I personally don't think this Doom will hit the right notes with a lot of people. The Snapmap concept may well give it longevity as people create better experiences than the developers.
@Johnnycide
Different developer, although both are Id IP's. Doom's single player is being developed by Id proper while another team is doing the multiplayer with Id oversight. Wolfenstein 2014/2015 was created by MachineGames, a bunch of Scandinavians who had previously worked on the Riddick FPS's. They all fall under the Bethesda portfolio though.
@BAMozzy
Not everyone, just the majority, lol. When people think Doom or quintessential Id FPS's, they do not think Doom 3.
How are these 80's style games btw, the FPS as we know it was born in 92 and 93, not on the Atari 2600.
Also, modern games work so much better? Dunno, want to play Burnout 3 or watch amother dude bro FMV from Need for Speed 2016 because it needed narrative and a modern edge? Modern though? Modern games are wonderful, but so are games from the past, venture out and play the classics a bit more.
Id - PC centric FPS's from 1992 to 2000 that were light on narrative,.....but put major emphasis on speed, twitch gameplay, and absurd kill counts. Each release was a technical milestone of some sort.
Id post 2000 and post Quake 3 - not their golden years, lol.
I think this is going to bomb. Preorders must have been well below expectations. GAME offered me Doom for £10 when I collected my uncharted 4 ps4, which I rejected.
£10 for a yet to be released AAA game?!
