What a game. It starts really slow (dare I say dull?) and then ramps up, and up, and up, and up!
When I hear all the praise this is getting it makes me kinda sad we're going to have to wait so long for TLOU 2.
Yup, an overly slow start (should have began with Nate doing his regular job and everything before being quick exposition or something).
Overall, amazing game, well worth all the praise. GOTY so far.
I really like the start. It definitely is a crawl, but it provides so much context for what's to come that it needs to be there in my opinion.
@get2sammyb
It does provide a lot of context, but perhaps they could have cut down on some of the dialogue and platforming. It should have been half as long at most. It's an amazing game, but I think the slow start is a legitimate complaint (not a deal breaker whatsoever though, not even close).
@sub12 No yeah, that's totally fair - I do see where you're coming from. In fact, before the embargo lifted, I did wonder whether it would get panned a bit for being extremely slow in places.
I really like chapter 3-5, it nails everyday life drake has. I'm still in the early chapter thought, I'm not in a hurry to finish the game, maybe play 2-3 chapters perday.
It is great, I haven't gotten far due to time restrictions. But it is equal parts stunning and highly addictive.
Nope ......Waiting for a pricedrop before playing.......Will definately get it at some point though The visuals look stunning though
I literally had to delete two games just to save space for all the photos and video clips I've been saving on it! Like BUT LOOK AT IT! It's the amount of subtlety in the game too. the opening and up to where I am now (chapter 10) was perfectly balanced and paced, the sound design is stupidly ridiculous (and under appreciated in some quarters perhaps?), but without spoilers, just a number, does anybody know how many chapters are in it? Just so I know how far I am from finishing it. Cheers!
I really like what ive played so far. Found myself grinning at certain scenes and actually shouting out loud at a certain scene involving a bell..... it looks incredible. Found myself messing about in the jeep for 10 mins looking at the mud effects.
The game comes to life at about chapter 6-7. I'm on 11 now and it's just getting better and better.
I didnt like start like in U2,3 , but it is better and better onwards
Grappling hook is great addon! Also fights seem to be more fluent or with more action. IDK how to write it, but fights are more about fighting than "ok, so circle, triangle square" in U3. Do you have same feeling like I have?
I haven't had much time to play, but I'm really enjoying it! I have the day off for the most part, so I'll probably play a ton when I get back to my home.
@get2sammyb Agreed, I personally love the beginning. This game beat Uncharted 2 for me. It's amazing, and in my opinion, better than The Last of Us, which I found to be pretty overrated to be honest. Although I guess people will say the same about Uncharted 4 too.
@BowTiesAreCool 23 chapters I believe.
My copy should finally arrive today. Not surprised about the slow start, as all recent ND games seem to be like that.
Question: do I need to dl the day 1 patch to play?
I'm currently in Scotland now, and so far I'm really enjoying it, the slower pace of the start of the game is really good and sets the story fantastically, seems like ND has learnt a fair bit from TLOU.
The multiplayer is stunning as well, game of the year? yeah I would think so.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Thanks for the heads up. Thankfully I skipped to the comments to see people ripping the guy apart and one of them mentioned the spoilers.
Just finished the campaign (on hard) and collected all the 'collectibles' too. In my opinion its the best 'Naughty Dog' game so far. Whilst I know its not exactly 'ground-breaking' - what game can be that finishes off a quadrilogy? - its still leaps ahead of the previous 3. It does 'borrow' elements from the Last of Us but that's not a 'bad' thing in this case but the changes from the previous ND games to this are immense.
Its not just the wide-linearity, the vehicles, the rope, the stealth etc but the level of detail in the facial animations combined with the story writing etc that really brings everything together. You can see the emotion on their face, their expressions etc. The level of detail phenomenal. Areas that have nothing, no reason to visit (no treasure, off the pathway) are so well detailed - dare I say almost Photorealistic. Obviously on my first playthrough I have missed some things but its the finer details that amazed me as much as the breathtaking vistas. The Jeep for example, the way the mirrors work, the way mud builds up and gets washed off, the way the aerial bounces with the movement and the jerry can too - the attention to detail is incredible throughout and like I said in areas that you may never see too.
Simply amazing!!!
Haven't read any comments or the article just Incase I'm 2 chapters in and about 8 matches of tdm. Really enjoying so far I guess the scene is just being set for me looking forward to progressing the campaign when I get my next day off. In the mean time a bit of multiplayer for those odd 20-40 minutes of free time
I've just done the gaming part with Elena which made me grin like a cheshire cat! Very cool.
Enjoying the slow early pace so far. Incredible graphics. Well done Naughty Dog yet again...
@seanobi I think a lot of people would argue that the fact they cut that aspect was one of the best things about it. Myself included.
Chapter 20 is amazing, stand out for me. I only finished it on normal and it's significantly easier than TLOU on the same difficulty IMO (as a hopeless gamer).
Gonna give it a few days and play through the next hardest and concentrate more on collectibles. I missed a lot cos whenever I needed to press L3 it broke the game's camera more often than not, requiring a restart of the checkpoint - has no-one else had this?
@fybyfyby I think it's more fluid too, tho there's one later in the game that I really struggled with which SPOILER SPOILER uses a slightly different system.
this is one of those series I dont even care about playing in the first year of release
Will be purchasing it very soon. Been swamped at work so haven't had time to get into any gaming lately, and the little time for gaming I have had has been dedicated to obtaining all the Omega variants in Ratchet and Clank. Just a really fun game.
I've only played up to the part where you first set out as an adult, and so far it's ok.
I don't really like the controls though. Feels kinda rigid, like in TLoU. But in TLoU it felt OK because of the genre- the RE style controls meshed well. But here? Idk...
I do recall not really liking TLoU until playing a good ways into it, and I have a feeling the same will apply here. I'm learning that these ND games don't really have the most fluid gameplay, but everything else is so good that it seems easily forgivable.
@seanobi I'd argue that just because it "had" it doesn't mean that it should. I know what you're saying, but the supernatural always felt out of place to me - to the point where they partially acknowledged that with the way they handled it in U3.
@JaxonH I think this is easily the best "playing" Uncharted game to date. The combat sequences are sublime IMO.
I'm only on chapter 11, partly because I don't get much gaming time these days and partly because it's so dam gorgeous and I just keep standing around and looking at it. I enjoyed the start and loved chapters in Drakes normal life especially at home 😉, the action is a huge improvement on the previous entries and there is quite a bit of freedom in how you tackle enemies. It's learned some good lessons from TLOU especially in the story telling department (the change of personnel payed off). Finally as stated many times it's absolutely stunning, with the best facial animation I've seen to how the game deals with physics especially in destructible environments, it has to be seen to be believed. Simply the best looking game I've ever played and potentially the best game on PS4 (not sure until I finish it but it's already up there)
@CD456 How long did it take you to finish? I was close to 16 hours on my first playthrough and I somehow missed over half of the collectibles.
Ok, as a huge avid ND fan I can say hand on heart U4 is leaps and bounds above TLOU in standards you can see that they have learned from TLOU and added in a lot of their experience of the game.
I have to admit the scene with the bell had me wondering WTAF!!!
This is by far the prettiest game on the PS4 to date and by a long way the best game of the year, I havent finished the SP yet due to me taking my time with the game I know im about half way through it and lets face it a gaming masterpiece like this game should be savoured not devoured in a quick 12 hour session. I will say one thing the opening is slow but fun is it as memorable as U2 NO WAY nothiing beats the opening of hanging off a train over a cliff
Enjoy your gaming guys I am working all weekend so no more gaming for me until tuesday !!
Still playing but not as good as the trilogy. Combat seems lacking.....
@get2sammyb
I couldn't dodge when fist fighting at the prison, which felt sort of odd to only be able to punch and get punched. And there's no run button I've discovered yet. And rather than pressing X to climb a ledge, you have to press X to grab a ledge, then press X again to hop up on top of it.
I haven't played the others so I have no baseline to compare to- only TLoU. But, it's not one major thing, it's a whole bunch of little things that, when combined, just make the gameplay feel stiff and rigid.
We'll see how I feel about it after playing a decent ways into the game.
@johnny30
Wow really ??? I thought that they made it a bit more enjoyable certainly not a grind I love the stealth aspect of the game
I'm running around taking "photos" with the camera setting. I'm truly stunned at all the detail in this game. The plants even have insect chew marks! I like the combat better than in 2 or 3, personally. If I get a headshot, they do go down. I've been playing on hard, and trying to stealth my way through a lot of encounters. The fire fights can get intense! Fun, fun game.
@JaxonH
Thats a drawback for yourself not playing the original games makes it hard to compare, from memory the originals are also like this and it has a lot of timing aspects built into it if you mistime your press of x you are likely to fall to your death
@Ypmud the combat has changed. More like last of us and also to fit in with the multiolayer. I found it too easy even on hard mode . I guess amy hennings departure changed things . I can't quite put my finger on it but something is different
@CD456 You think over 18 hours is too short for a game like this?
@johnny30 The combat's lightyears better than the previous three games in my opinion. They finally realised their vision of it being more than a cover shooter by pushing and pulling you around the combat sandboxes and giving you lots of different tools to get about.
Definitely agree that inspiration comes from The Last of Us, but it still feels very Uncharted to me; you feel like an action hero when you're swinging on ropes firing from the hip, sliding down mud, climbing up a wall, darting between different points of cover. Ammo's low, but that's by design to encourage you to keep changing your weapons.
I love the way it all feels personally, but to each their own.
@get2sammyb I must admit, lack of mythical or supernatural aspect was, I thought, the only disappointing aspect. I was really hoping we would see something right up to the end. It was something I loved about the first 3 and liked the 'trophies' attached to them in the Nathan Drake collection. I was looking forward to seeing some Pirate related supernatural, mythical creature - especially as the MP has mythical/supernatural elements. For me that was the only disappointing aspect. I guess each to their own but that was part of the Uncharted Series! I had fears over the ending but I think they did a great job with that...
My playthrough took longer than 20hrs but I was playing on Hard and collecting everything as well as attempting to get most of the trophies. I think I have 83% of them now...
@sinalefa I hate those people I had it with another game someone was funny and spoiler the ending..... He thought he was so funny I wanted to punch his face in.
this is one of the games I got a ps4 for, but I have a rule this gen, I won't pay more than £20 for any game, so i've got a few more weeks to avoid spoilers.
Really liking it. I feel kind of split about some things. I genuinely can't say if they're good or bad things but, for example, the semi-open world nature of some areas. It's good in a way, if ties into the exploration theme and all that, it makes the areas feel more like real places. On the other hand, I keep going one route thinking I'll check that other area in a sec, then something happens that traps me in the route I went and now I can't go back and check the other place. It's a bit annoying, yet I guess you could say it would be weird if you could just wander around willy-nilly and choose when to get ambushed.
It does have an arguably negative impact on pacing, though, where Naughty Dog's pacing intentions can be overridden by wandering around semi-aimlessly in the vague hope some collectible turns up. I think that's one of my overall takeaways from this game: the pacing feels a lot looser and the game as a whole is kind of hard to keep track of from a dramatic point of view. Yet, to flip it around, it does feel like a much grander adventure than the more tightly controlled previous games, at least in terms of scale.
Also, I'm playing on Hard and the difficulty seems incredibly inconsistent and spiky. I know from completing the first 3 games on the difficulty above Hard that that's kind of a series tradition, but it does feel worse in this game. Most fights I go through first attempt, some take me about 15 attempts or more.
@BAMozzy To be fair, in Uncharted 3 there wasn't a supernatural element. There was some kind of drug in the water, Drake was hallucinating for the last parts of the game when he was fighting genies/djinn.
The first game had the explanation that the thing was a virus, although it's obviously still very sci-fi since it's a fictional virus that had some incredibly dramatic effects. Similarly, in Uncharted 2 you could regard the sap thing as a kind of combat drug. The apparently mythical creatures you see are just humans in disguises.
All that said, they still gave the impression of a supernatural thing even if they rationalised it and in all cases were still very fictional things other than UC3 which could just be any hallucinogenic.
@get2sammyb Just curious, why did the supernatural stuff feel out of place for you? Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider and a lot of games/films of that ilk have a supernatural element to them.
Personally, I missed it as well, I would have loved undead pirates, but then again, the game was incredible regardless, so by the end I didn't care that much.
I've seen this argument a lot though, and that's perfectly fine obviously, but it always seemed a bit weird that people don't mind supernatural elements in Indy, which clearly inspired Uncharted, but complain about it in these games.
Best gameplay of the series, but I don't feel like it's as good as The Last of Us, and arguably Uncharted 2. There are times where the game overstays it's welcome......it could have used about two or three hours cut off, or at least some further considerations on the pacing.
At the heart of it, the Uncharted series is mechanically a rather simple third person shooter, there's just really not a lot to the gameplay, and that's not a knock, it's fun as hell......but due to that simplicity, I feel like Naughty Dog games needs to strive for the perfect tempo to keep you moving along. Usually they hit that high mark, but there are times where they fall a bit short.
Still my GOTY so far, an amazing title that deserves all the high praise, it's just not perfect.......but it's as close as your going to get in many regards.
Currently at chapter 6. I think I've passed the ''slow'' beginning, although I rather enjoyed it. Can't wait to continue tomorrow.
@johnny30 Amy hennigs departure did change something, it made Druckmann and straley take charge of UC4. Druckmann has far better writing capability than hennig . Infact with TLOU and UC4 druckmann has established himself as the most talented director in the industry. Bruce straley also nails the gameplay. Unlike justin Richmond did with UC3!
UC2 druckmann and straley. Uncharted 3 richmond and hennig. Which one was better?
If you're suggesting that Amy hennigs involment in UC4, would've made the game better then i'd disagree. Her writing in uncharted 3 was very cliched and lacklustre .
You guy's never fail to surprise on this site. First you don't like Journey, then you think Uncharted should have supernatural elements...
I feel like I've entered a different dimension sometimes.
@get2sammyb
I haven't missed the super natural element one bit. In fact I didn't even think about it until I saw the comments on this article. I also agree it's the most refined as far as the gameplay. That's one aspect that Naughty Dog really nailed, along with the visuals. Still haven't finished the campaign so I don't want to give a full assessment yet but I'd say through Chapter 18 I have a good enough idea to say the gunplay especially is easily tops in the series. It's as good as some of my favorite FPS and TPS.
I was so glad they left out the supernatural, when they joke about 'ghost pirates' I was slightly worried.
Ok I'm starting to come to terms with the controls now. And I learned I can roll to dodge punches. That helps a lot.
Yes, I can see I'm going to enjoy this game a lot.
I've only just started it, let my son play through it first, and all I can say is ND know how to make a engaging game
I love the game perfect uncharted finale for me.I just wish it was longer I've virtually finished in two days. Mind you I could not put down the controller. The best game I've played on ps4 so far.
I'm on chapter 9 now and hoping that there's at least 40+ chapters!?
I got what I expected -a presentational masterclass that will for some reason be held up as the pinnacle of gaming until the next ND game.
I've been playing video games since the original Pong arrived at my junior school. I love video games a lot. I enjoy the single player experience more than online play as I don't have the time to put in to becoming anything more than cannon fodder.
Anyway, I found the single payer experience in UC4 an amazing experience. The game is incredibly beautiful and the controls, for me, were intuitive. I banged through it first time just to get it completed but have now started again to see if I can get the treasures. First couple of chapters are a bit boring the second time around, but the rest is still great.
I'm not sure what will beat this game on a technical level. It's beautiful, it sounds great and it gives us an amazing photo mode.
10/10 for me, just brilliant stuff. It has cemented Uncharted as one of my top 5 favorite entertainment properties of all-time. I really want to discuss more but I don't want to even slightly spoil things for others who are still going through. I'll just say, I was worried at the start. They kicked Amy Hennig off the project and while I have a lot of respect for Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley I wasn't sure they knew what made Uncharted tick. Thankfully I was proven wrong. There's only a few games I say this about, but like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario 64 and Metal Gear Solid 3... Even if every other game on PS4 was 1/10 terrible, this would justify the $400 I spent back in November 2013.
@BAMozzy I agree with you on the supernatural stuff...I was expecting to fight pirate skeletons by the end D: But they made a more grounded story and it was cool too!
@get2sammyb Why no supernatural elements? It's been a part of the series since the first game xD And it made Uncharted 1 more than a generic third person shooter with that. Also the buildup for the supernatural stuff is really cool in 1 and 2 (3 had less supernatural stuff). I don't see why people don't like that xD
I liked it a lot, but I really can't get into the multiplayer at all and it's such a shame, as it was basically all I ever played back when Drake's Deception came out. I've also tried to replay the story last night, but it didn't quite feel as exciting. I also didn't like the final fight that much, felt very anti-climatic compared to the other games.
I prefer Among Thieve's for it's single player and Drake's Deception for it's multiplayer, but A Thief's End is still a fantastic game.... Definitely way better than Drake's Fortune
I'm waiting this one out. Glad it looks to be a great SP game but I've grown too tired of UC during the first three games. I think I've grown allergic to cover shooters...
Anyway, maybe I'll get back into the genre later and have a ball. Doom may be my next destination
My copy only recently arrived (that's what I get for living in Latin America I suppose) and I haven't had time to pick it up yet. I'll definitely start it sometime this upcoming weekend though. Can't wait
Best game i ever played!!!!!! How could i play all those other games, after this perfection?!
@Drawfull i know exactly the part youre talking about and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Absolutely zero fun. Thats the only criticism i have at the moment having finished it yesterday.
So having completed it, I was surprised about the supernatural elements. The title was clever, the story and gameplay upped their game from their precedessors (maybe not as groundbreaking as Uncharted 2, but still among the best).
The only problem thus far was the soundtrack, it was not until I heard "Cut to the Chase" I realised just how quiet, subdued and forgettable many of the tracks were. Playing multiplayer just made me lust for a soundtrack. Speaking of Multiplayer, the buddies are annoying... Other than its fun enough until Co-Op arrives.
@Drawfull @Johnnycide
Try attempting it on Crushing, you'll lose your goddamn mind.
Going to borrow it from a friend can't pay R1000 here in RSA.
Had a raz on my friend's copy a few days ago. Oh dear God it's glorious.
The controls feel smooth and fluid, the transition between cutscenes and gameplay is totally seamless, the script is fantastic and intriguing, the visual style is wonderful, and technically it's pretty much flawless.
I need to play through this series. Also, I have to go there: it's more fun than Last of Us. This is wonderful.
@Punished_Boss_84 I always play all the Uncharted's on Crushing (they are generally too easy otherwise), and damn, there was a stage in Uncharted 4 where I must have died 50+ times.
(two armored shot gunners + others spawn, kill them and a armored mortar shell launcher guy + others spawn, and then even if you don't kill him (good luck there!), in a minute two more armored shot gunners + others spawn, all in this very, very small room with no place to hole up or hide and recover)
I have been playing Uncharted 4 all weekend, and its a great game. It still has a terrible flaw in the controls (its not as bad as it was in Uncharted 3 though) and thats the circle button. Circle rolls, unless you are near cover, then you cover, or drop if you are near an edge. The amount of times when there is ambiguity between two or three of these situations is pretty crazy. Rolling away from an enemy? Roll near some random rock? Now you are taking cover...but not on any side that would have helped. Uncharted 3 had this even worse because circle + direction was also a "grab and throw"!
@thedevilsjester that happened to me as well quite a few times.
2/10. Completely unplayable.
(Just kidding)
@Johnnycide Oh yeah, another one last night, got to the "elevator" stage with less than 20 pistol ammo (on crushing)...that was...interesting.
