We love the DualShock 4 here at Push Square Towers, but it looks like we're not the only ones. The Wirecutter in collaboration with Engadget has determined Sony's current controller as the best option for PC gaming, despite there being a slew of alternatives available. According to the publication, while there are some setup hurdles with the PlayStation 4 peripheral, it offers the best combination of comfort and performance for the price, with the touchpad's ability to double as a makeshift mouse cursor being among its advantageous attributes.
The article does, of course, point to the Xbox One controller and its Elite compatriot as alternative options, outlining their simple setup procedures β but it mentions the lack of a touchpad and awkward shoulder button placements as a reason to go with the DualShock 4 instead. If you're looking to use the PS4 controller with your PC, then the DS4 Windows software comes highly recommended, and a lot of PC games now support PlayStation button prompts to make you feel more at home.

It is a great controller - going back to the xbxo 360 juke is similar in many ways of going from a PS1 pad back to the 3 button megadrive pad. This pads awesome.
On a side note the trackpad is crap - who uses that?
We're currently using an X360 controller - the MS online store sent me 1 for free when they screwed up an order - and it works really well plug and play. This sounds like a promotion for a PC controller that really doesn't want to work with a PC. I'm sure the touchpad as mouse is nice but w/ so many games written w/ Xbox360 controllers in mind I think that's the better choice.
This isnt' my idea of the best option.
I use a 360 controller. I prefer PS controllers but the 360 was plug and play. No hassle whatsoever.
I'm using an Elite and I'm never going back! The shoulder buttons are placed less awkward and are less 'clicky' on the newer models, but who need those anyway when you've got paddles? At this point I'm even buying games on PC or One that I would much rather play on my PS4 just because of this controller. I've bought 2 of those puppies on the cheap when they first launched after a mistake from an online retailer and everyone in my family has the same problem now where we're so spoiled by the paddles we don't wanna use anything else.
Although nice in theory, I can't imagine that the trackpad is an actual advantage while playing. And like @rjejr is saying, setting it up is more complicated than it should be, so I honestly can't think of a PC gamer going for the $60 DS4 when they can get a plug and play 360 controller for half the money. But with Elite controllers going for $100- $110 these days, I'd definitely recommend getting one of those to all PC gamers.
I'm not really a PC gamer, but I like the X1 controller more. The rubber on my DS4 analogs broke and tore within one year, and the plastic with writing on the back peeled off leaving this sticky rectangle. Idk, just seems so cheaply made.
I have yet to try a DS4 with a PC though- only the 360 controller. I want to try the STEAM controller though.
The DS4 seem's OK now, OK as in this one has lasted more than a couple of month's without needing replacing. I'll stick with the Xbox1 controler for my PC thank's, infact i'd use it for my PS4 if I could.
@xMEADx
You could.

@Boerewors Your the 2nd person in the past few days to mention the Elite controller. While I'd never spend $150 on a controller - I like getting the consoles w/ a controller when they get around that price - my son the clarinet player may like it. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw those paddles on the bottom. Of course his green clarinet was only $100 on Amazon.
Weird choice, considering the Xbox One elite controller is better in every way.
@Grawlog
The D-pad on the DS4 kinda sucks to be honest, especially if your retro gaming on your PC, it's just not the best option (the build quality is fine but the design is not the best).
Just my two cents, outside of that the DS4 is a solid choice.
@Grawlog
The Vita D-pad is ace, it's a shame they didn't use a slightly larger design of that for the DS4.
@Neolit I have never try the Elite but I don't see what's the big deal 150.00 and ut doesn't even have the d-pad in the right position
All I can say is that the DS4 works until it breaks and it breaks very often, that's why I own three. Two of which are currently not working for their second time each. Rubber, useless, triggers, brittle, light bar, completely useless peice of crap. Nobody should ever defend the light bar. There should be an off button. Apart from that it's a very nice design, I don't like the triggers, the touchpad is pointless as is the light bar.
It takes a bit of time to set up, but the DS4 works pretty well on the PC. I like it more than the 360 controller, anyway, although I'm currently looking at transitioning to the Steam controller.
I personally would rank them 360>ds4>x1. The elite is absolutely flawless but at its price it's In its own separate realm.
Wish Sony would release a DS4 similar to the Elite. Agree on the comfort thing though, build quality aside it's a very natural feeling controller and do prefer it to my XBOX One controller.
Just make sure you disconnect the PS4 first or you could end up purchasing half the PlayStation Store without realising it π
@Bliquid what's with those nerd on promnight jokes.... it's not funny...
I don't have a PC for gaming but I do have the XB1 Elite controller and it is leagues ahead of the DS4 in terms of build quality and usability in my opinion. I find the touchpad awkward in the few PS4 games that use it, the shoulder and trigger buttons (the trigger stops on the Elite are great for FPS games too), although greatly improved over the DS3, still can't match the Elite and the thumbsticks - especially the fact that the Elites can be swapped around giving more height for more precision feel far better. The velvet plastic casing and rubberised grips feel far more comfortable for longer session and fit together perfectly - both my DS4's have slight gaps, edges etc because they don't fit together as snuggly and don't mention the abysmal battery life - My XB1 rechargeable pack lasts a lot longer!!
Its fully customisable and can have 2 very different layouts too. If you like fighting games, the D-pad can be swapped out doe the disc which makes all those combo moves a lot easier so I hear.
It maybe expensive but its by far the best controller I have ever owned - It cost less than 3 DS4's but Its already outlasted at least 1 DS4 so far and still feels and looks as solid and as perfect as the day I bought it!
DS4 Windows is a bit tricky to set up with some games in particular, but I love using it, especially if I can map some inputs to the touchpad in intuitive ways! The Xbox One controller sure is nice, but I personally prefer the placement of the analog sticks on the DS4 and how it just feels less bulky and heavy in my hands with its slim, ergonomic build.
360 controller best, aside from durability, the sticks wear out in seconds.
Dualshock 4's are comfortable but the first ones out were not made to last I have bought 3 controllers now and only 1 of them works as it should and didn't need any thumbsticks replacing
PS controller is not bad but nothing beats the elite controller. It feels so good in the hands, almost moulded into them.
haha, nope. I use an XBO controller for PC gaming. Never needed a touchpad because my mouse is usually right next to my PC...and that's hardly an advantage when you have to switch the shoddy analog sticks or the creaky triggers.
They have improved it, I recently picked up that Uncharted-brand DS4 and it is miles better than their launch DS4s. Still has crap battery life though...
Honestly, I don't know what they're talking about, I love Xbox One Elite controller's bumpers and triggers. Also, both DS4's touchpad and lightbar are gimmicks even on PS4 games, at least the ones I play. The only advantage of the DS4 over the Elite controller is that the PS4 controller is cheaper. However, DS4 battery life is short and it's not recommend playing with a micro USB cable attached, so...
Agreed, DS4 is the best normal priced controller out there, and Sony really has done a great job improving upon it with ever iteration. Just a quality piece tech. I even use it as my primary tv remote, it's just comfortable.
I'm a playstation + pc gamer and IMHO xbox controller (360 or xbox1) is much better on pc than ds4. I personally use xbox360 controller for PC and there is just no way I would reconsider to use a ds4 on it.
It might be because I've owned Sony consoles and never Microsoft ones but I plain dislike the Xbox controllers.
