Sony has no shortage of first-party studios, but it looks like a new team has been officially recruited to the Worldwide Studios family. SIE San Mateo has always had a light role in game development – it houses various internal technology groups and Entwined developer PixelOpus – but it seems like it's going to have more responsibility moving forwards, as it's collaborating on Spider-Man and PlayStation VR exclusive FarPoint.
It's unlikely that we're going to see this studio up on stage making its own big-budget game anytime soon, but Sony is all about external developer partnerships right now – both Sony Santa Monica and Sony XDev Europe are heavily involved in many of PlayStation's second-party releases – and it sounds like that's exactly where SIE San Mateo will be lending a helping hand.

I was expecting them to purchase insomniac
I know I got excited there for a second, nevertheless cool that their setting up a new external studio.
Insomniac remain independent. Sony owns Spider-Man so no surprise the games an exclusive. Speaking of which, Sony also owns the Resistance IP, so fingers crossed for a Resistance 4 VR, That would be soooo sweet!
