There's been a steady trickle of PlayStation 2 titles launching on the PlayStation 4 since Sony rolled out its PS2 Classics initiative, and it looks like Metal Slug Anthology will be next up if the PlayStation Blogcast is to be believed. As is the case with all of these emulated outings, you can expect upscaled 1080p presentation and full Trophy support from 5th July.
For those who didn't play the Metal Slug Anthology on Sony's last-last-gen system, it comprises a cavalcade of arcade goodness, including Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5, and Metal Slug 6. More than enough to keep you busy during these barren summer months, then, eh?

I have this on the Wii, it was pretty great, though all of the control options sucked there sadly, since it was early on the Wii's lifespan and they were obligated to put crappy motion controls where they definetly weren't needed.
I wonder if the PS2 version ran smoothly? I know for a fact that at least the PSP version had much lower framerate compared to the Wii version.
This might be the first PS2 port I will buy...
I will definitely buy it. Glad I waited with buying the remaster of metal slug 3.
Tempting, I've not play these before. Looks like fun.
@LieutenantFatman
For my money they were the best 2D run and gun games ever made, especially 1, X, 3, and 6. I think quite a few people would agree with that statement.
So if you like Contra or Gunstar Heroes, it's pretty much a must buy.
Yesssss!!!!! More classics please!!
This exactly the game I wanted. Been on a NeoGeo kick lately, and this is part of the main course
@sub12 Gunstar Heroes is one of my all time favourites on the megadrive!if it really is anything like that I'm in
I would get this but I already have them on my Neo Geo MVS . The only way to play a Neo Geo game is with a Neo Geo arcade stick.
@Wazeddie22 mmmm kind of. In my opinion gunstar is unique, but you will 100% enjoy Metal Slug. The graphics are fantastic.
The only downside is the ridiculously tough last levels. I lost 50 lives on the last level of ms3 or 4 on the ps4 already.
@themcnoisy
They are both 2D run and guns, same genre and all. Gunstar is a bit more frenetic and you have the weapon combo options, Metal Slug is more deliberate and detailed in level design.
Gunstar is a 16 bit classic no doubt, I've beat it twice, but I don't think it's quite as as good as the Metal Slug series or Contra 3, or the Japanese/Korean version of Contra Hard Corps.
Would rather have PS4 native ports of the remaining Metal Slug games... this is a somewhat strange way of bringing the rest of the Metal Slug series to PS4.
@Mahe
This is a much better way IMO.
Sure, you don't get online play (I could care less), but in return you get 1080p / 60 frames, and all seven games in the anthology.......and I highly doubt SNK would have payed a port house developer to bring the whole series to the PS4 like they did with 3, maybe we would have seen one or two more games at most.
@themcnoisy Damn,that's a shame.I don't mind hard games or a challenge but I don't have half the patience I used to now I'm older so that kind of puts me off a bit.Still interested though so I'll probably wait for a sale
@Wazeddie22
In the anthology (had it for PSP) you have multiple difficulty levels and a variety options for lives (including freeplay), you don't need to play it at its orginal standard MVS arcade difficulty.
@Wazeddie22 you can pick 99 lives as @sub12 mentions in the game settings. As an older gamer you owe it to yourself to give these games a go. At release metal slug was the best in class, but the arcade base shows, there are unfair deaths and stupidly tough set ups - but you have to play it for all of the positives. You can jump into tanks and submarines, elephants, planes etc etc. Great weapons, the animations top notch and its dead easy to play.
@Expa0 Even if it ran bad usually the ps2 emu on ps4 fixes the fps problems
Nice, I had this on Wii. I'll be sure to pick this up.
@themcnoisy @sub12 Cheers for the info guys.Just been checking the games out online and really liked what I saw.Will definitely pick this up at some point.Will make a change to the type of games I usually go for now
@sub12 X was a remake of 2, right?
what was wrong with 2?
If they keep the frame rate up to snuff, I'm sold.
@Mickael486
The original Metal Slug 2 for the NeoGeo MVS/AES had problematic coding which artificially increased any frame drops..........so the game suffers from some pretty massive slow down.
X is an improved version of 2 with a playable frame rate and some new weapons,.....and levels which were extended / or remixed. So it's pretty much the ultimate version of 2 (although 2 is still fun to play through and notice all the little differences).
The actual PS2 anthology is emulated with an increased CPU speed, so none of the actual games have any frame rate problems.
An emulator inside an emulator? Ummm that usually doesn't turn out so well.
@goonow
Your over thinking it, given how KOF 2000 looked on the PS4 via PS2 emulation, these will probably be the best looking versions avaliable.
Great news. Love these games and I never played past 3 so they are kinda new. My bro likes them too so another title to couch co op.
I own the PSP Version which I haven`t played yet!
So looking forward to getting this. Anyone have any ideas as to how much it'll be ?.
