Perhaps the biggest disappointment that can be levelled at the PlayStation 4 is that, three years after its original release, it still feels a bit like a launch console. Don't get us wrong: we absolutely adore the device – but there are some really obvious features that have been absent since launch, and we're not entirely sure why. Sony's updated the console, adding cool new functions like Share Play and Communities – but these have come at the expense of simple additions, like folders and external HDD support.
We're praying that the impending PS4 firmware update v4.00 – which is set to enter open beta later this month – goes back to basics, then, and finally incorporates the features that we've been yearning for since day one. To put it another way, here are six additions that we reckon the impending update simply must include.
Don't fold on folders
The most frustrating thing about this one is that the PS4 already has folders – they're just infuriatingly reserved for the TV section. It's easy to see how this would work, and we can't imagine that it's a difficult thing to implement. Just let us categorise our games, Sony – it really shouldn't have taken this long.
32-bit heaven
We've been loving the PS2 re-releases that have started hitting the PlayStation Store with a little more frequency lately, but we'd like to go back further in time, too. PSone Classics with full Trophy compatibility and upscaled 1080p presentation would be beyond amazing – who doesn't want to earn a Platinum in Metal Gear Solid or Crash Bandicoot, after all?
A tidier Library
There needs to be a way to see absolutely every PS4 item that you've ever downloaded – but it shouldn't be the default view. More filtering options would be massively appreciated, so that you could "hide" demos and betas that have long passed their sell-by date. At the moment, the Library is sluggish and needlessly messy, but Sony only needs to provide a few extra options to help clean it up.
BFFs
If you've only got a couple of friends attached to your PSN account, then you're unlikely to have issues navigating it. Unfortunately, this author has almost 400 contacts, which makes it a bit of a mess. A simple option to "star" or "favourite" certain companions could push their profiles straight to the top of the list, which would make things much more efficient for sociable types.
A fresh lick of paint
There are some awesome dynamic themes available on the PlayStation Store – and many of them are free. But what if you want a screenshot that you've taken from your favourite game as your background? Currently there's no way to use a basic JPG or PNG image as a custom wallpaper, and this seems like another super simple thing that Sony could fix.
External HDD happiness
Sure you can crack open your PS4 and whack a new hard drive inside, but not everyone wants to do that. External HDD support would solve this issue in an instant, allowing you to plug in a new drive by USB, and use it to dramatically increase the storage space of your system – without ever needing to touch a screwdriver.
Six simple picks, then, which would make the PS4 dramatically better overnight! Are you hoping all of these make their way into firmware update v4.00? Is there anything that we've missed? Download the latest system software in the comments section below.

Coming from an N64 background, I missed all of the PS1 era games. Getting them released on PS4 with full trophy support would be really awesome.
To add to the wallpaper point, I'd love to be able to choose my own background music to go along with that as well. Most of the PS4 themes are pretty poor in my opinion, so I'd just like to be able to customise it in my own way!
How about the ability to change your gamertag!
THAT is LONG overdue!
Love the videos Sammy, keep them coming! Folders & external HDD for me. I want plenty of room to install games, and a way to hide the disc games on the menu. I don't need to see the disc game all the time if it's not in the system.
@UrbanMerc The only reason I didn't include it is because it seems like more of a PSN issue than a firmware one, but it definitely needs to happen, too!
Please don't change the PS1 classics, that means they'll find a way to make me pay to use the dozens of them I already have on my account.
External HDD support is a must!!! Not sure what Sony is waiting for but I find myself downloading a lot more games on my Xbox one with a 3TB drive attached. And I really don't wanna open my ps4 either!! Cmon Sony! Get it done!
Part 2: and while I'd like to see psone games on ps4, I really don't feel I should have to pay for them again like they're doing to us with ps2 games and PS NOW!! To me psone discs should of been playable on ps4 right out of the box!! What a rip!!
External HDD
External HDD!!!
@UrbanMerc I agree. No excuse for this.
Bang on. Folders are absolutely necessary, and criminally overdue. Using our own pictures as wallpaper and maybe even picking our own music as the background theme would be a lovely bit of customisation. And of course, PSOne games with trophies would be a gift from the gods.
I don't know what I'd do if they brought back all my favourite PSOne games with trophies. I'd have to quit my job and become a full time gamer.
Just folders, librabry sorting, Trophy sorting options.
@joey302 Well it is so easy can't understand why you wont do it. I am so bad at this stuff and it was so easy. The only thing I regret is not doing it way more early.
Folders and external HDD support is a definite for me! And also tidy up that bloody library, I'd rather go into the store and and find what I want to download from there!....
PSN tweaks are needed too, like full PSN access, favouriting games through PS4 etc etc
1: External HDD Support
2: External HDD Support (such an important point - it needs mentioning twice)
Everything else for me is non-essential. I can 'favourite' friends, add custom Wallpapers, play background music etc on my XB1 but never bother. I doubt I would use folders - most look ugly anyway. Not bothered about being sold PS1 games AGAIN! External HDD support though is essential! It annoys me having to delete games I haven't finished with just to play a new or even a 'deleted' game - which then can include redownloading, waiting or it to reinstall, redownloading patches/DLC etc. I want to turn on my console and be playing within a minute or 2, not faffing around for hours juggling games just because I decide to play an 'older' game I own or forced to play one of the few games I have on my HDD because of the hassle it takes to play some of my games library - something that NEVER happens on XB1 with my 5TB of additional Storage. I know I could buy a 2TB internal, but that would be full by now too! I know I am not very complimentary about the IGC games but I don't even have space to try them and not going to delete a game to bother either. Its affecting my decision to buy 'new' games - last new game I bought (Uncharted 4), I ended up wasting 20mins, trying to decide what games to delete before I could install!! Its NOT good enough!! In an era where games MUST be installed and are 40-50GB average that Sony haven't yet given us External HDD Support - For the Gamers? only if you intend to play a few games over the lifetime...
Boss article Sammy and I agree with every point.
We are desperate for external had - make it happen Sony.
Can someone explain to me why there is an issue with storage space? The only thing I can think of is that space may be tight if you are not deleting games you are done with (which can be downloaded again anytime). I have been prompted to delete files to make space for new downloads, but it doesn't take long to find something that is fine to go. Larger disk space will only work up to a point, but once that cap has been hit, the amount of time cleaning up would be the same.
On a side note, thanks for actually including an article with your video features! So many sites could learn from you guys. It's really appreciated.
@Shellcore A 500GB allows you to store 10-12 games. A 5TB drive allows you store over 100 games. Chances are that you may never fill that but if you do, then its easier to delete 1-2 that are unlikely to be used rather than just limit yourself down to just 10-12 games at any 1 time. That's also not including the 10-12 games you can keep in the internal as well!
I 'rarely' finish games to the point they have nothing left to offer at all - platinum trophy achieved and no MP to bother with. I like to be free to put in any game I have and play whenever I want without having to spend hours juggling everything around and re-installing everything. Quite a number of my games have MP too. I want to be able to play at a moments notice if a friend wants to game - even if I rarely play those games. I don't want to have to say 'give me a few hours to rearrange my limited library to play' by which time is too late. I know damn well that if I delete Killzone (for example) that a friend will ask if I want a game because they have just picked it up cheap or it will get offered as an IGC game and the popularity will make it worth jumping in again. As I said I have very few games I can say I have 'fully' finished with (possibly 1 - Infamous: 2nd Son) and certainly none that I can definitely say I will not want to play again in the near future. Every generation of console I have owned, I have enjoyed revisiting 'older' games - particularly in 'quiet' periods (like now) because I am 'bored' with the same few. I can't be assed to delete those 'few' to reinstall an 'older' game to play for a few hours, delete that to install another 'old' game to play for a few hours and then delete that to reinstall the new game because I now want to return to that! Some games (like the Witcher3 for example) can be 'finished' in a few weeks and never touched again until the DLC comes out, played for a week and then months later played again because the next DLC is out!
New patches can also transform games that you may have given up on. Some games don't have an ending as such either - racing games for example.
I have a 5TB external HDD on my XB1 and its not even half full - and that includes downloading a LOT of the GwG and 'every' game I own is 'instantly' playable (I say instantly but its at most the time it takes to swap a disc - maybe install a small patch if its been a while). I know that what ever game I own and want to play, I can be doing so in minutes regardless. No need to try and decide whether or not to delete games A-F that I haven't finished, not playing currently, but want to return to at some point in the very near future, Games G-J, that I play quite regularly but not daily or Games K/L that I am waiting for the next Update but not playing just at the moment and are massive (Games like Destiny with ALL DLC/Updates) just to play a 'new' game, an older or game a friend wants to play online that I deleted to make room for games A-L. I look at my games on my shelf and think I fancy playing a certain game and then get put off because of the hassle it takes to decide what to delete just to reinstall it. It puts me off buying games because I haven't got 'room' for it at the moment because I haven't finished with my very limited games on my HDD and know that as soon as I delete, that game is almost certainly never going to be played again because of the hassle OR until Sony add External HDD support!!
Funny that most of these 6 features are on XB1 and have been for a while now...!!
Agree on all point, especially Folder and Tidier Library. My library is a mess off demo, alpha and psplus free game that I don't want to play.
All of the above features are needed plus some nice green backgrounds.
@Ottobot808 Thank you, glad you like them!
@Napples While it'd be unfortunate if we had to pay again, I do think they need to add Trophies. Maybe they could come up with a way to discount them for people who've already bought them?
@BAMozzy I just keep the saves when i really need to play them again I just reinstall them. I made it work with 500GB. Now i installed a 1,5TB harddisk so I will be set for a long time. When i play a game I want to finish it.
i'll just be happy with all the features which are on the PS3 at the moment
@Flaming_Kaiser Its not the saves I am concerned with (do they get deleted when you delete the game file - I hope not). What do you consider finished? blitzing through a campaign on Easy/Normal? I don't always want to 'replay' a game straight away on 'New game +' or the newly unlocked 'Brutal/Nightmare' modes, don't always want to revisit a 'specific' chapter/mission to try and unlock the missing trophies. When does MP finish? When you have played a match on every mode? unlocked any associated trophies? In my opinion MP never has a finish point - even if/when you reach the max level. When are games like Destiny finished? Not many of my games are 3-4hrs long Indie throwaway titles that once beaten offer little to no reason to return but big AAA releases, with online options, replay challenges etc. I have beaten Uncharted 4's campaign - not got the platinum trophy but not ready to 'delete' yet because I may fancy jumping into the MP, may have a go at beating the campaign on the hardest difficulty at some point, may decide to complete a few of the remaining challenges I didn't get on my first playthrough, may decide to buy some DLC in the future. I can say the same about a lot of my games - more than I have space for. On my XB1 for example, I have games I haven't played for a while, that would have been deleted, but know I can jump in easily. Friends that say 'fancy a game on 'x' for a laugh' and can say yes because its on my External. Can just play what I want, when I want - NO HASSLE.
I have never had to worry about playing a 'game' I own in the past. I didn't have to delete a few games to play a game I bought 2-3 years ago, just put in the cartridge/disc etc and played! I never felt I had to beat SM64 in a week because Zelda is coming out and can't delete Goldeneye and Mario Kart because I played those regularly with friends/family. I never had to say to people I can't play CoD4/BF3 for a few hours as I have to delete a few games to reinstall these, download all the DLC/patches again etc for a 'few' hours of playing knowing that as soon as I finish, I am only going to have to delete and re-install the games I deleted to play those again!
This is the ONLY console that prevents that spontaneity! Its all very well and good saying you can 'reinstall', re-download etc but when that can take 'hours' its not very spontaneous at all especially as some aspects don't work until fully installed and patches downloaded! Its a JOKE!!
And the 6 Features we will get will be all 'social/internet' Zzzzzz related I really haven't got the energy to ask for Fol...oops I nearly typed it again
@BAMozzy Thanks for the explanation. I can see how that would be useful for the reasons you stated - especially for multiplayer. I have been trying to plat games before moving on (not always possible), so delete on achieving this. More a money saving technique than trophy hunting - but also a space saver. Thanks again
@BranJ0 Exactly. Thing is, I feel like PS will never change this, as I'm sure they prefer taking peoples money for the really "iffy" backgrounds they can charge two bucks for. And yeah - they ALL suck horribly. PS3 is superior in so many ways aside from graphical power.
Offline trophy support!!!!
Just give me a gamelog just like the wii u or xbone, please.
Personally I try and play one or two games at a time otherwise I lose track of where I am, what the controls are etc. but if external hdd is supported by the competition and easy to accommodate than why not.
I'd love to have more control over my library, the PS Store could be more user friendly and intuitive which goes for a lot of the menus, maybe I'm getting forgetful in my old age but it takes a few too many button presses to get what I'm looking for and doesn't always make sense.
@feral1975 YES!!! +1
It still baffles me why we don't have offline trophy support...
Anyone get 4.0 Beta invite email yet? That's all I'm waiting for
Anyone get 4.0 Beta invite email yet? That's all I'm waiting for
Its got all the features I need.
@joey302 So you expect a PS1 disc from nearly twenty years ago to be compatible with a machine from 2013?
A featured feature about 6 features that need to come to ps4 in the future.
Nicely done lads.
@Flaming_Kaiser if you're as bad as you say I'm probably worse X 10!!! Lol
@get2sammyb Trophies would be nice, but it would have to be a considerable discount. If it comes down to paying $2 per title to "trophesize" my classics or keeping my PS3 hooked up, I'll keep the PS3 up and running.
@adf86 well both my PS3's play em...I can see ps4 not playing PS3 being PS3 is a complex machine to emulate hence the existence of Playstation now.
@adf86 Discs, no. But there's no reason we should have to pay to access PS1 games on our PS4s either. Given sony's track record, and the fact that they can claim that nintendo gets away with it, it's a definite possibility.
@Napples That's fair but you may be in the minority.
External HDD support should have been day 1. Everyone knew 500gb wasn't going to be enough. I mean we all complained about the Wii U's 32gb but the games were 1/8 the size at the most and I could buy a usb drive for it day one. But I guess it doesn't matter now that I finally broke down and installed a 2tb in my PS4.
