Well, it all makes sense now, doesn't it? We're not referring to Team GB's characteristically slow start at the Olympic Games, but the hullabaloo surrounding early copies of No Man's Sky. Writing on the hotly anticipated title's website, Sean Murray has outlined the contents of the release's v1.03 patch – and it's bigger than even we expected.
In fact, there's so much here that we're going to struggle to paraphrase it all – but we'll give it our best shot. And there are very mild spoilers in here, so maybe don't read if you want to go in completely blind. So, first of all, it seems like the game's story and primary quest content has been completely re-written, with Deus Ex scribe James Swallow brought on board. There are now multiple endings.
Moreover, the entire universe has been tweaked: the position of planets have moved, biomes have been updated, galaxies are now larger, creatures are more diverse, and atmospheric conditions are more hazardous. That's not all: skies are more active, terrains are more detailed, and there are a greater variety of AI ships patrolling the great expanses of space.
Gameplay tweaks have been made, too: inventories are larger by default to encourage exploration, trading has been rebalanced, creatures now have their own diets for you to discover, the controls are smoother, the graphics are better, and exploits which made the title easier in its pre-release state have been removed.
To be honest, the changelog goes on and on and on: space station interiors are more varied, texture pop-in has been reduced, performance has been stabilised, and much, much, much more. We've included the full list of patch notes below, which you're free to pour over at your own convenience – if you have the time to read it all.
One thing that's worth noting: if you've already started the game then you can continue playing, but you'll need to create a new save to take advantage of all of these updates. Moreover, the servers will be wiped today and again tomorrow in preparation for launch. Phew – now we understand why Hello Games wanted people to wait. This is some update.
No Man's Sky PS4 v1.03 Patch Notes
- The Three Paths – there are now new, unique "paths" you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience.
- The Universe – we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.
- Diversity – Creatures are now more diverse in terms of ecology and densities on planets.
- Planets – we've added dead moons, low atmosphere and extreme hazardous planets. Extreme hazards include blizzards and dust storms.
- Atmosphere – space, night time and day skies are now 4x more varied due to new atmospheric system, which refracts light more accurately to allow for more intense sunsets.
- Planet rotation – play testing has made it obvious people are struggling to adjust to this during play so it's effects have been reduced further…
- Terrain generation – caves up to 128m tall are now possible. Geometric anomalies have been added. Underwater erosion now leads to more interesting sea beds.
- Ship diversity – a wider variety of ships appear per star system, and are available to purchase. Cargo and installed technology now vary more, and ships have more unique attributes.
- Inventory – ship inventories now store 5 times more resources per slot. Suit inventories now store 2.5 times more per slot. This encourages exploration and gives freedom from the beginning. We're probably going to increase this even further in the next update, for people in the latter game phases, and will allow greater trading potential.
- Trading – trading is deeper. Star systems and planets each have their own wants and needs, based off a galactic economy. Observing these is the key to successful trading. We still working on adjusting this based on how everyone plays, but all trading values have been rebalanced across the galaxy, giving a greater depth. A bunch of trade exploits were uncovered and have been removed
- Feeding – creatures now have their own diet, based on planet and climate. Feeding them correctly will yield different results per species, such as mining for you, protecting the player, becoming pets, alerting you to rare loot or pooping valuable resources.
- Survival – recharging hazard protection requires rare resources, making shielding shards useful again. Storms can be deadly. Hazard protection and suit upgrades have been added. Liquids are often more dangerous
- Graphical effects – Lighting and texture resolution have been improved. Shadow quality has doubled. Temporal AA didn't make it in time, but it's so close
- Balancing – several hundred upgrades have had stat changes (mainly exo-suit and ship, but also weapon), new upgrades have been added.
- Combat – Auto Aim and weapon aim has been completely rewritten to feel more gentle in general, but stickier when you need it. Sentinels now alert each other, if they haven't been dealt with quickly. Quad and Walker AI is now much more challenging, even I struggle with them without a powered up weapon.
- Space Combat – advanced techniques have been introduced, like brake drifting and critical hits. Bounty missions and larger battles now occur. Pirate frequency has been increased, as well as difficulty depending on your cargo.
- Exploits – infinite warp cell exploit and rare goods trading exploit among other removed. People using these cheats were ruining the game for themselves, but people are weird and can't stop themselves ¯\_(シ)_/¯
- Stability – foundations for buildings on super large planets. Resolved several low repro crashes, in particular when player warped further than 256 light years in one session (was only possible due to warp cell exploit above).
- Space Stations – interiors are now more varied, bars, trade rooms and hydroponic labs have been added
- Networking – Ability to scan star systems other players have discovered on the Galactic Map, increasing the chance of collision. Star systems discovered by other players appear during Galactic Map flight
- Ship scanning – scanning for points of interest from your ship is now possible. Buildings generate earlier and show up in ship scans
- Flying over terrain – pop-in and shadow artefacts have been reduced. Generation speed has been increased two fold (planets with large bodies of water will be targeted in next update)
- Writing – The Atlas path has been rewritten by James Swallow (writer on Deus Ex) and me. I think it speaks to the over-arching theme of player freedom more clearly now. Early mission text has been rewritten to allow for multiple endings.

Wow, that's a lot more than a simple update.
Murray also said the next update will include the ability to own large freighters and build bases.
"alerting you to rare loot or pooping valuable resources."
Holy sh%£
Sounds awesome. Now do I trade Minecraft and One Piece in for it?
The world changing based on choices is very cool. Giving you more variation upfront is a good move.
Space Pirates!
Who on the Push staff is reviewing this? Just curious.
I'm not reading because of spoilers. When is this patch due out?
I can feel the hype now! Can't wait to fly through space and find some planets and creatures!
(One thing they should do is keep adding in creatures or resources to randomly generate them! That should keep the game rolling in the planet side)
I'm really happy they are adding base building
@ApostateMage When is the day one patch out? No idea friend.
@Jake3103 oh really? That sounds interesting. Curious how much they will add now.
So is that update as big as it sounds? Could be fun watching the server's from the sidelines on Tuesday. What's the over-under on this going off without a hitch?
So, anybody else think we should just wait to play all games until we get a Neo? I started Ni No Kuni last night, and am finishing up Bayonetta so I can start B2. Decided maybe it's time to put a dent in my backlog before starting anything new.
@ApostateMage Monday I believe, they said the servers will be wiped again tomorrow. So I'm waiting till Tuesday.
What does the planet rotation affect? Like, what are people struggling with?
@Splat We've got @Quintumply on review duties, however you shouldn't expect a review on launch day, as we'll obviously be ensuring that we have this update installed before getting started.
@ApostateMage Tomorrow it seems!
@JaxonH I believe it's referring to the day/night cycle. Depending on the planet you're on, conditions can change dramatically depending on the time of day. Looks like they're trying to make those transitions less harsh.
@rjejr There have been big day one patches for even bigger games than No Man's Sky, so I'm sure the servers will cope fine.
They've blown me away with these patch notes, still waiting for reviews before buying, but I'm much more optimistic now.
My only problem is that I have not seen any enemies on the planets. They have space pirates, but you only fight them in space?
@get2sammyb "so I'm sure the servers will cope fine."
Floods, delays, leaks, patches. The game practically seems cursed. I hope for their sake it does go off w/o a hitch - well w/o anymore hitches- that would make for a pleasant surprise, and those are a rare commodity these days. I wish them well and will keep my fingers crossed for them.
@Kellanved I guess I am less optimistic. If so much is changing from the game that they released on disc I am not sure I am especially confident in what this product will be. Add in the lack of reviews and the begging people not to play and this doesn't really seem that promising. Really hope to be wrong about this though.
When this got announced I thought it sounded good, but had no interest in buying it at all. But as we're getting closer and closer to it releasing I'm wanting to play it. And that whole "journey to the centre of the Galaxy" thing just gets me more and more interested.
@ApostateMage There's nothing really spoiler-y. Sean himself posted it. And the patch is due out August 8th, I believe.
@rjejr You should stop asking what everyone else thinks you should do and make a decision. I mean really, 6 months on and you're still asking everyone what to do. The whole innocence ploy is getting old. You have kids and a wife. You can decide whether or not you need another gaming console. The comments section doesn't make your rent or house payment.
@get2sammyb Do you guys know how big the download file is?
But How big is the update ???
@AJ423 @thatguyEZ 800mb what I read on forums and twitter.
@shokwave2 @AJ423 @thatguyEZ Yep, about 800MB. Sean Murray replied to someone on Twitter saying so.
Cheers all. I read the patch notes and it all sounds jolly spiffing. I'm especially digging the galactic economy for trading, it was one of the things I liked in Rebel Galaxy.
But is it longer and uncut?
Great news! Also, I thought I'd say thanks for providing the info but not going into spoiler territory. I know I was being a miserable b*astard (not sure if that constitutes swearing or not here!) on the leaked copy, but I thought I'd say you guys got the balance spot on with this slice of news.
Now I'm super hyped to play this. It's going to be amazing. Mark my intergalactic words!
Also, the guy who bought the leaked copy now just looks like a muppet!
@Churchy I've read a fair amount from the guy who got this early on Reddit and he's given some really constructive feedback, I wouldn't be surprised if some of this was used to shape this patch. Feel like he's done everyone a favour getting it early to be honest!
Wow, that update is close to MMO-like, which is pretty astounding for a single player game. All the updates sound amazing and I LOVE the idea of owning a freighter and building bases on my favourite planets! I get the feeling the next 12 months is going to bring a lot exciting things to NMS, and I can't wait!! Bring on Wednesday
Can I just say I called it with regards to labour of love and the ability to patch the game on the fly to address any unbalanced aspects and so on?
The amount of apologies going on on Reddit is through the roof.
But now, one concern: I hope that the dramatic changes to the universe can be avoided in the next patches, would kill the mood a little bit if you wanted to go back to a planet you really liked and you just couldn't find it anymore. #AProceduralPlanetToCallHome
When I saw this last night I was literally blown away. No wonder they withheld review copies, this changes the entire game.
I'm all in now, I believe that Sony & Hello Games have a great vision for NMS. Very rarely do I buy games Day 1 & it's even rarer with unproven IPs, but colour me intrigued I'm buying into the hype.
Does anyone know if the patch is going to preload for those who already have it loaded from purchasing on the PS store? If it loads tonight at midnight when the game becomes playable, the servers are going to be bogged down and the gake won't be playable for god knows how long. I plan on hitting that tonight,
Language -Tasuki-
Oh great! Another game released that isn't finished. Seriously thinking of cancelling my preorder now.
This story just illustrates the foolishness of jumping on games ASAP (sometimes for large sums of money).
The typical game nowadays isn't really 'done' at release, although ironically by the time it goes on sale it usually is.
Fair play, seems like a major improvement....gotta love these devs
@Neolit Totally agree.
Force those pu**y's to GIT GUD at it, because that makes it waaaaay cooler
@Napples I didn't ask anybody anything, you read it wrong, it was a general question to the masses from the masses, it wasn't about me and what I should do.
If I do ever have a question though, I'll make sure not to ask you.
Yep. Still a day one purchase for me, physicsl copy!
Am I alone in thinking this has been a wonderful slight-of-hand play by Hello Games?
@Quintumply @shockwave2. I see, I see. Thanks guys!
@get2sammyb Well it looks like you were right, no hiccups* in the NMS release, a nice pleasant surprise.
I'm not counting a few frame drops as a hiccup, the game finally released and worked, thats what matters. Now Sony can focus every show on Dreams for the next 2 years.
