Sony often gets criticised for paying too much attention to so-called "smaller" games, but speaking at Gamescom 2016, likeable PlayStation exec Jim Ryan has said that the platform holder primarily cares about great titles – regardless of whether they're made by massive studios or minuscule ones.
Asked if the company finds it hard to balance the different types of titles, here's what he had to say: "At the end of the day, it's just about great games. We don't discriminate between something that's a AAA or something that's an indie. If something's a great game, then it gets focus, attention, and love."
Ryan pointed to the company's commitment to No Man's Sky as an example, outlining how the platform holder has invested just as much into that game as it would one of its own major blockbuster releases. We reckon that this is the right attitude for the record – great games should always come first, irrespective of who's making them.

I think it is a great approach. I mean, opinion might be split but No Man's Sky is a great example. That is an indie game almost everything but hype, price and marketing. Not sure that it would have gotten onto systems if it hadn't been for Sony support.
This is why i have a PlayStation the games. Only Nintendo are better (1st party) but they just don't have enough games for me. Playstation will gamble on all sorts different games regardless of who makes them. Yes some fail and some work but end day the variety is top notch
Sorry but whenever Sony says something like "It's all about great games", it reminds of those horrible Ps4 (exclusives) games like Lost Song, Umbrella Corps, Energy Hook, Koi, Shadwen, Last Wings, Arcania, Risen 3, Godzilla, There Came an Echo (should have been an X1 exclusive instead), Speakeasy, Coffin Dodgers, Natural Doctrine, Wander, and other upcoming ones like Roller-coaster Dreams and Solbrein (the trailer for the game is hilariously bad). Seriously why would Sony even gave these games a pass? Then I again, I would also want to know why Soda Drinker is on the X1.
Yeah, the diversity in games available is why I choose playstation over others console.
Couldn't agree more these labels aren't a factor when I consider whether to buy a game or not.
That's how it should be for any console actually. I like Sony's approach here.
Why discriminate when you can charge $60 for indies?
They clearly dont push all indies the way they did to NMS, regardless of "greatness".
With the caveat of dusty old Vita.
@SoulsBourne128 were all those titles Sony exclusives or did the publishers just not bother to sell them on other consoles, I literally have no idea?
But there is a difference between them, clear as day: that is the problem.
That's convenient. In that case they can give us a AAA and an Indie each month
PlayStation4Lyf! There ain't no place for discrimination in this world.
But in all seriousness, had Sony not pushed NMS as much as it did I wouldn't have picked it up. Also the notion that an 'indie' shouldn't be fully priced, just because it's an indie is absurd. I've put more hours into NMS than any other game on the PS4 bar the Witcher 3 & Dragon Quest Heroes.
@sinalefa Well COD €60 with the remastered levelpacks that is right..... I rather pay €60 for NMS.
Speaking of No Man's Sky, I've just downloaded a quick update for it. I hope it's to fix the constant crashing.
No man`s sky isn`t great...
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Some of these are Sony exclusives and some are console exclusives. The problem I with these games is that I still don't know why Sony would let them be available for their platform. I mean, why the hell was Sony okay with Umbrella Corps, or Godzilla or even freaking Solbrain (seriously, the game looks god awful, it looks like 2007 mobile game if it was made by a college student smoking drugs, just look at the trailer ). I guess Sony wants to give the PS4 more support compared to the PS3 but must they really allow EVERY games they see to be on the Ps4?
I don't really care about whether something comes from a large or a small studio. If anything, I tend to prefer indies as the smaller budgets tend to allow for greater creative freedom. Same reason I broadly prefer handheld games to console games.
@premko1 In your opinion.
@Soulsbourne128 Sony let a lot of these games onto the consoles because it keeps relationships with publishers. You mention Umbrella Corps, well would Sony have got Street Fighter V or Resident Evil 7 VR if they all of a sudden wanted "great games only" were allowed onto their consoles, they would find a lot of companies not wanting to do business with them, due to a policy on a very subjective matter.
@ApostateMage I've literally just installed it, turned it on, and as the game was loading (the screen saver with all the stars in it) it crashed, however, that appears to have been the only time thus far so if it hasn't got rid of them entirely it's improved it by far, I used to get three in a row.
This is why I love Sony though, sure there has definitely been questionable titles that I've not liked and thought were terrible (subjectively of course) but I've had a blast most of the time, I've always seen Sony as the all in one company, a healthy mixture of genres and experiences, Microsoft as a online juggernaught focusing mostly on multiplayer experiences and Nintendo as a, well, Mario console (which isn't bad) except their handhelds I've always seen as a JRPG haven which I love. I honestly feel Sony have the best approach but that's because I'm into trying all sorts of wacky and outlandish games as well as story driven experiences.
If these indies games are so great why do you keep unloading them on my vita through PSN+?
Sony sucks. Nuff said...
@adf86 Great games don't crash every 10 minutes and have pip-in so bad it takes you right out of any excitement you haphazardly come across. That's a fact, not an opinion.
@Fenriswolf-
Well said !!!!
They put more money into advertising NMS than they did an actual great game in Ratchet & Clank. That disappoints me quite a bit.
@Fenriswolf- Funny that cos it's barely crashed for me and the pop in is a legacy of it's procedural generation. You saying NMS isn't great is still an opinion, not a fact.
@premko1 Do you actually contribute to anything in the comments other then short worded insults about Sony? Because your comment history suggests otherwise.
Yea, sure. Somehow you manage to have a different result from everyone else eh? Again, I didn't say the game wasnt great, I said great games don't crash all the time, and don't have such severe pop-in...procedural generation or not. Period. Not to mention the game is hollow, i feel like im in a stage set when i play it. You can say it's a good game, or is a good foundation to work on. But great it is not, and only the fringe following will argue that it is. And besides, the reasoning is irrelevant, the fact is that a great game is great because it is nearly flawless. This game is far from it.
