What a difference a year makes. Just 12 months ago, Rise of the Tomb Raider was one of the tentpole titles in Microsoft's "greatest ever" Xbox lineup -- and now it's one of the posterchilds of the PlayStation 4 Pro. Maybe -- just maybe -- Square Enix played a blinder after all. Or, perhaps, this title's going to flop for the second or third time. We're losing count.
Anyway, here's a PS4 Pro trailer showcasing Lara Croft's latest on Sony's supercharged system. As is the case with most of the machine's footage thus far, it doesn't really demonstrate just how much of a step forward the format will offer. And having ogled the device for a fair few minutes earlier today, we can confidently say that it very much does represent a step forward.

@get2sammyb I'm at EGX tomorrow with my brother. I've got my PSVR slot booked. But I'm also looking forward to seeing what my pre-order for the PS4 Pro will actually give me. It's my first ever foray into the gaming convention world. I can't wait.
@blakey78 Have fun, man! If you spy us, please say hello!
I cannot wait for this! Hope it sells well, last thing I'd want is this franchise being dumped!
Will do, I'll be easy to spot. I'll be the guy in the Man Utd shirt with one leg lmao (I wear a prosthetic by the way)
This game is so good. Played it last year and just gobbled it up. I loved the reboot but this game perfects it in every way.
Down with this sort of thing.
Its Unchartered 5, with one of Nathan Drakes skins. Next up is Doughnut Drake.
@themcnoisy LOL
Still have yet to play the dang reboot. This doesn't look bad and I had interest in it since last year, but I'd rather play the reboot first. Aiming to get that on PS4.
The reboot is great, I played through that twice, TBH. Definitely worth picking up at this point.
I can't wait to see all ps4 vs ps4 pro digital foundry comparison video. I hope there's enough difference on graphics in 1080p tv since I don't have 4k tv.
@hadlee73 After disaster that is tomb raider sales on xbox one I'm sure squareenix wouldn't do stuff like this again
lol, said how I felt about this game so no need to do it again
@DerMeister - then you should, man! It's a really decent game. It's looks good, runs great and is dirt cheap
@hadlee73 Of course squareenix will say that they were pleased with the game's sales because they doesn't want angering investor because of the bad deal they make with microsoft.
They doesn't give total sales compared to the first tomb raider reboot though because it sold less than that game (rise of the tomb raider sold 63,000 units at retail in the UK – by comparison, its predecessor sold 183,000 in 2013 across the same 24-hour period). It sold 2.9x less than the first game.
That's why squareenix now double down on ps4 exclusive with game like dragon quest 11, builder, world of final fantasy, and nier 2. Hell squareenix even prefer to release nier 2 on steam rather than xbox one.
@BrettAwesome Sweet. I'll need to get a PS4 first, but it's on my (rather sizable) list of games to pick up for it!

@JaxonH I really enjoyed the first game, much more than I thought I would as I like my RPG w/ parties and groups, which is why I'm not a big Zelda fan or Sky rim or anything like that (no first person view disqualifes a lot of those). But the 1st had enough interactive and dramatic cut scenes and set pieces and man was it gorgeous. If you say this one is better, I may have to pay for the Pro. Well if they decide to bundle it, gotta bundle something, can't launch a console in 2016 w/o a game. If Pro doesn't get a game bundle I'm getting Slim w/ U4. Do you think we'll know about NX before Black Friday?
I really wish I could see a 1080p TV next to a 4k tv with HDR in person showing the same footage of anything, so I can get a real feel for the jump in quality.
Maybe in the future. Hopefully.
The timed exclusive with Microsoft meant this game could be made otherwise it would never have happended. PS4 now has a better version with more content than if it had been released at the same time as Xbox. I was initially angry about the deal and got on my high horse about it saying I would wait a another year to play it. But I am now ordering the game to show my suport for the franchise. If gamers choose to wait and get it on sale etc then the same situation will arise again (if they make another game).
As for the Pro version sure it looks nice but not worth me spending another £200.
@hadlee73 On console physical sales usually make the most of games sales. Nier 2 and World of Final Fantasy are being released as console exclusives on ps4 is because it will sell well. Xbox one audience just don't buy games unless it's shooter, it's not worth it for squareenix to release nier 2 and woff on xb1. Final fantasy type 0 only sold 20% on xb1, quantum break flops, sunset overdrive flops, I'm sure ff xv will sell way more on the ps4 rather than xb1.
And I think the new dragon quest on nx will be the 3ds version, not ps4 version.
@dryrain There's no way squareenix doesn't have money to make new tomb raider. Tomb raider always sold well on ps4, and before that squareenix show ps4 logo and xbox1 logo on their trailer. And I don't think they're ever gonna make xbox exclusive anymore lol.
@wiiware I like how you say the Square made it exclusive. From what it sounded to me MS panicked with UC4 coming out so they approached Square with the offer first. Square just being a business made a wise business decision. A guarantee X amount of money just by releasing RotTR on Xbox One first smart business move.
I find it funny that Activision made a similar deal with the CoD franchise starting with Black Ops 3 and I don't see the negative reaction that Square or TR got. Ah gamers you are a fickle bunch aren't you?
@Tasuki There's no negative reaction with call of duty because it's not exclusive? I mean if microsoft got 1 year exclusive dlc for tomb raider and not full exclusive I'm sure ps4 player will be annoyed but there will be no backlash. Who care about some dlc.
@wiiware
"Of course squareenix will say that they were pleased with the game's sales because they doesn't want angering investor because of the bad deal they make with microsoft"
No that's not true. When a game doesn't meet expectations they're not afraid to say so. They can't mask the numbers, and that's what investors look at more than just what they say. RotTR sold twice what the reboot did on Xbox One, and they still have PS4 sales to sink into now.
When everything is said and done, I'm sure they'll be just dandy.
@dryrain Except it would've been made without M$
@DaveIsAnAceGamer MS dollars didn't make the game if it did then for sure it wouldn't have been on PS4 like SFV isn't on Xbox One. MS just gave the money to release it first on Xbox One.
@Tasuki I'm okay with third party exclusive if there's good reason. Like sunset overdrive exclusive to xbox because insomniacs want to have the ip, or street fighter 5 because microsoft doesn't want cross-play between 3 platform (psn, live, pc). But tomb raider deal is just greedy. Oh well, what's done is done, I still buy the game if I can get the artbook one.
@JaxonH The first tomb raider reboot doesn't meet expectations set by squareenix, the second one sold less. Crystal dynamics ceo is fired. I don't think dandy is the word.
@wiiware
You have to compare 360 to 360, X1 to X1, PC to PC. Can't just say "it sold less total"
when it isn't done releasing yet.
And even if it sold less pound for pound on other platforms, that's irrelevant because Xbox/PC gamers had no reason to not buy it. So if it sold less pound for pound, then it's for other reasons and has nothing to do with the exclusivity. Xbox and PC gamers aren't protesting and upset.
So really, you're gonna have to wait and see how it does on PS4 for a year before drawing any "it sold less" conclusions. Because it could sell less just because it naturally sold less, and has nothing to do with the exclusivity.
I'd look at X1 and PC sales and see how well it did. And then project that expectation on PS4. So if it sold 75% as well on X1 as the reboot sold on X1, then a fair expectation would be to sell 75% on PS4 as the reboot did.
That's just something we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.
@wiiware SFV was an exclusive to PS4 cause Sony helped fiance it.
@Tasuki Yes sony help fund it but I don't think that's the only reason, I'm sure microsoft want to pay more to get full exclusive on street fighter 5, it's just that capcom want unified community between pc and console and microsoft doesn't play nice with that.
Lets be honest here. The original Tomb Raider also had 'poor' sales initially considering the number of PS3's, XB360's and PC's in peoples homes. Sales at Christmas, especially digital sales and then the remaster/definitive edition on next gen helped bump sales up considerably. Rise of the Tomb Raider launched after a lot of the 'big' holiday games and on the same day as Fallout 4.
A Game though doesn't need to sell 10's of millions just to be 'successful'. A game like Final Fantasy XV has to sell 10m units to be profitable but that game has been 10 years in the making and had millions spent on it's development. The first Uncharted sold less than 3m yet was profitable.
As far a I am concerned, Rise of the Tomb Raider was one of the best games of last year and there is a great chance of me buying it again this year for my PS4 Pro. I didn't buy the DLC so I am looking forward to playing that along with the added boost that the Pro will offer.
@JaxonH The xbox exclusivity is a bad call
@wiiware
Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.
Either way, go support this great game when it releases! (It is a really good game)
Loved the reboot so yeah I'll go for this.
Ok guys were are done discussing wether the exclusivity has been a good thing or bad thing. We can't discuss it civially so we're done.
Thanks for understanding.
