PlayStation Access has put together a rather good comparison video to show off the visual differences between The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition on PlayStation 4, and the original PlayStation 3 release. At over ten minutes long, it's a pretty comprehensive analysis as the team visit various locales in the game and place comparable footage in sequence.
Unsurprisingly, the current-gen remaster looks far more graphically impressive, with better textures, lighting, and draw distance. The latter is arguably one of the biggest improvements here, as you can now stand on top of a mountain and look out over the land without the smaller details fading into nothingness. Surely that's a win for immersion? The whole thing just looks a heck of a lot more vibrant, too, with the last-gen version seeming incredibly washed out when compared. To be honest, we're looking forward to seeing how the release looks in native 4K resolution on the PS4 Pro.
How do you think the Special Edition looks? Keep the skies clear in the comments section below.

This is obviously impressive but what I'd like to see is a side-by-side comparison of PS4 & PS4Pro. Show us how it's going to look at 4K/HDR compared to regular 1080p please!
Wow. Much impressed, very big difference. 'Course, I've played the game enough that I can't imagine re-purchasing for full price.
now im curious how the switch version compares to this
I wonder how many problems this will have on the ps4. I have absolutely no confidence in Bethesda at all.
I was watching the gameplay video these 2 were talking about and it looks amazing, also how good is it going to look in 4k? My only problem is that I have the platinum for this on PS3, so do I want to trawl through it again? Maybe but does anybody know of you can transfer save files? It'd be nice to see my character move around in more than 15fps
@carlos82 Nah, no chance of save transfer from PS3.
@hieveryone I'd imagine very similar. The switch is rumored to be more powerful than the xbox1 but around the same as the base ps4.
How likely will this be on sale for half price in the post xmas sales?
@ShogunRok that's a bit disappointing, though having thought about it I'd quite like to start it again anyway
@carlos82 Yeah, at least with a game like Skyrim you can play a completely different character and stuff like that. Keep it relatively fresh.
@Hego Pretty likely I'd say. If not, then spring sales for sure.
I'm not much for mods myself but I'm interested to see how it look like on a PS4 Pro hooked up to a 4K tv.
@Tenacious-P yep exactly
@ShogunRok Creating a new character doesn't change too much besides looks, since eventually you get all the skills from what I recall.
@Mega-Gazz Yeah it's possible to max out loads of different skills, I just mean it's possible to try out different playstyles from the start. So instead of going the magic route to begin with, you could be an archer, for example. Might give you a different perspective on how to tackle the main quests and stuff like that.
I played 20hours on ps3 and couldn't cope with blurry graphics and meh framerate. But I will be picking it up for PS4 pro!
I tell myself that I'm going to play as a duel wielding assassin or a straight up warrior with a great axe but I know I'll probably play as a sneaky Archer. The arrow kill cam nevery gets old.
@ApostateMage Shooting an arrow in the back of some guy looking over a ledge and having the camera follow his body down the cliff. Priceless ragdoll.
@ShogunRok Or when you accidentally shoot your companion in the back of the head when they decide to cross in front of you at the last second, and they're crouched down on the ground you look at them like "what!? It was an accident!" Then they do it to you and your all "bro seriously!? I paid you 500 gold man, be professional!" The best part is tho, walking around for 2 minutes with an arrow stuck in your face. That game is as fun as it is frustrating. Definitely buying the remaster.
@SonuvLiberty I forgot all about arrows stuck in the head and body, arguably one of the game's best features.
How are the load times?
As someone who got a platinum in the PS3 version before it was patched, I don't think I could ever touch the game again, but I'm really excited to watch my GF play it for the first time. Like everyone else, I'm excited to see how the PS4 Pro version will look
I'm clearly going to be seen as some kind of heathen here, and I've never played Skyrim so I guess I'm not really qualified to pass judgement, but to me these environments are so, so dull. I just don't get it. They clearly look better after the upgrade, but it's just all so bland. What's the deal? I watched the PS Access video with them crossing the map the other day and it was all the same! This is supposed to be a fantasy epic setting, right? I don't get a sense of that at all.
PS - Bear in mind I'm not commenting on gameplay or story, which I'm fully prepared to concede are probably great (if I ever play it and find it's not I'll just assume you guys are all mental).
Nintendo should be ashamed of itself for showing footage of non-existant games.
Skyrim Remastered won't be coming out on The Switch (unless something changes).
How do they plan on hosting new AAA games on a cartridge system, in light of massive patches and hefty DLC?
This approach might work for Nintendo (only) since they typically have neither...but most likely The (Xbox One powered) Switch is doomed.
Sure Devs could down-port to the system, but why would they bother?
All I saw in The Switch trailer was a bunch of Millennials who apparently don't like to stay home.
The only good thing I can say about The Switch and those tiny controllers is that the system would work well for Virtual Console, but you would have to rebuy all your old games cause that's how Nintendo rolls.
