All's well that ends well, really. Alright, so we didn't get Silent Hills in the end, but Hideo Kojima has returned to the limelight, and Death Stranding comfortably looks like one of the most fascinating projects in Sony's portfolio. Heck, it's even got actor Norman Reedus and director Guillermo del Toro in it – two people who were supposed to be involved in the aforementioned survival horror.
But del Toro's doesn't give up a grudge easily, it seems. Writing a Christmas message on Twitter prior to the big day, the Pan's Labyrinth maker said: "Important holiday messages that ring true today as they always have: Feliz Navidad. Happy Holidays. F*ck Konami." The tweet naturally got lots of attention, and has been shared thousands of times at the time of typing.
For those out of the loop, del Toro – who's close friends with Kojima – was angered by the way the auteur was treated by upper-management at Konami, which ultimately led to his exit last year. He was also frustrated by the cancellation of Silent Hills – particularly after the success of the sensational P.T. demo. This isn't the first time he's called the company out, and it doesn't look like it'll be the last.

Del Torro and Kojima should make another game and call it "Casa del Vania"
Stop whining, change the name and start over. Sony or another big dev would be all over it. If all else fails, Kickstart it.
@sinalefa true dat! Call it Silent Mountain and do billions! Btw I'm still hoping Death Stranding to be a big troll from Kojima and come out with a PT style demo in the next years
I mean, at this point he's beating a dead horse with it's own leg. Konami could care less, they're still making money. Del Toro has yet to actually MAKE a game, and always seems to place the blame on someone else. If he were serious about it, he would start up his own studio and show konami how it's done.
you know i honestly believe if it wasn't for the fact they Own the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise Konami would have been dead years ago
Del Toro should get over himself he was not putting up the money for the project.
I'd really love to see those two launch a horror franchise that picks up where P.T. left off. People really don't care that much about the Silent Hill branding.
Loud gully. We have a new franchise!
Oh for heaven's sake get over it,it's getting boring now!
Konami really did screw up bigtime with how everything went down at that time. It was an epic disaster that took place and in the end Konami kind of screwed themselves. When you think of horrible business decisions, you can look at Konami, as well as previous Sony CEO howard stringer, and also SE with Tomb Raider. Konami on the other hand really did a big booboo on themselves.
Despite managing to this day to pretty much avoid spoiling it for myself, and having the demo registered to my account, I still can't ever play PT, since I bought my PS4 after Konami pulled it out of spite, right?
Yup, f*ck Konami.
Just call it "Shoutin' Mountain" and release it with different assets etc. Easy.
Meh, I have seen some of his movies. They are boring.
Personally I don't know the whole story from either side. I can understand gamers hating Konami because they love MGS but I also think Kojima is so up his own 'bottom' and would annoy a major company if he was employed by them that I can see why Konami may have been like they were - still doesn't excuse their behaviour by the way.
MGSv is one of the most expensive games ever made and was over budget and late. If you were way over budget and late delivering a product, your employer would be rightly annoyed too.
We don't know the pressure that Konami were under to recoup their investment, I can't think of many (if any) games bringing in revenue to keep them ticking over at the time which may have impacted on the situation.
Like I said though, we don't know the full story so I won't comment. I can understand that 'friends' and fans of Kojima will side with him against a big faceless corporation but it could work out for the best for both parties. Kojima now has his freedom to create what he wants and how he wants and if he bankrupts himself or his investors, well that's on him. Konami could struggle without their asset but could also develop and publish games that are more profitable. Maybe they won't make as much money as MGSv but could cost a lot less to make and hit deadlines. Its not unusual for publishers to get 'bad press'
@BAMozzy " I also think Kojima is so up his own 'bottom"
you know i kinda agree,he IS a bit full of himself but he does make some good games
but Konami has also made some BAD decisions, such as a focus on Pachinko Games and the way it treats their other IP's such as Castlevania, it had it's 30th Anniversary this year and they did NOTHING for it and it doesn't look like we are getting anymore games in the foreseeable future even though they left Lords of Shadow 2 with a open ending
the ONLY thing they seem pump out now a days is Yu-Gi-Oh stuff
@FullbringIchigo Not everyone likes Kojima's games but I guess that's the same with every game.
Castlevania may well be 30yrs old but its not exactly an 'icon' like Mario or Sonic for example. Maybe Konami are more interested in moving forward instead of looking to the past. Not every game franchise gets that kind of recognition and it seems that only a few characters get that - Mario, Sonic, Lara (although not too much was made of her 20th). Generally its more the iconic characters that transcend gaming. Mario, Sonic and Lara for example are known outside of gaming too but I doubt many people outside of gaming could tell you who the main character was in Castlevania. There has been a lot of games we think deserve sequels or at least should come back but maybe the developers aren't interested or publishers don't think the appeal will be broad enough to warrant the investment. Yu-Gi-Oh seems very popular and a money maker for Konami so it makes sense to focus on that.
Konami are a business - they are not sentimental and look at the figures. Chances are a Yu-Gi-Oh game will sell more than a new Castlevania and probably cost less to make too.
I would rather have developers that are free to make the games they want than be dictated too or constrained to a franchise. This gives them the chance of a break from franchises, to reinvigorate their passion, try new concepts/genres which could reinvigorate their franchise. We saw how the Last of Us impacted in Uncharted 4 and I wouldn't be surprised if Horizon:ZD has some impact on Killzone if GG return to that.
@FullbringIchigo "Castlevania, it had it's 30th Anniversary this year and they did NOTHING for it."
Pretty stupid from Konami, they had an easy win releasing some memorabilia or a collection of some description.
@BAMozzy "Maybe Konami are more interested in moving forwards"
Or maybe Konami are now run by Idiots? The inmates in charge of the asylum?
I actually took a peek at Konamis game portfolio 2010-2011 over 10 titles released but you can tell by the game titles they must have struggled financially. A lot of hd versions of old games, but the new games were shovel ware. Which I presume affected the companies business decisions there on in to this present day. Their future plans are awful from a gaming standpoint so you cant really say Konami are moving forward.
At this point I'm pretty sure that guests coming over to Kojima's or Del Toro's place at birthday parties and stuff are obligated to wear "F*ck Konami" T-Shirts.
A successful man up his own aris, coating off a company up its own aris, that sacked a talented man also up his own aris...
Load of arse it seems... Make a game and get on with it, you all make obscene amounts of money anyway
Guillermo 'Del boy' Toro is starting to sound a lot like a Donald Trump wannabe, ie. Rude and lack of manners. If this is common to his character not surprised Konami kicked out his best mate Kojima. These outbursts just put me off buying products to support their self ego personas. Rather spend my money elsewhere where decent people can get paid instead of angry ranters. Thanks to Del boy Toro the game he's part off has gone to back of my gaming budget! Nice one! Saved myself a few quid there!
@bbq_boy uh-oh...I want their games! I sure hope they can make it EVEN without your support 😃 lol
You guys do realize that for all intents and purposes Konami has been treating its employees like slaves for the past decade so the hatred is most certainly understandable.
