Sony's announced which games you can expect from your PlayStation Plus subscription next month. On PlayStation 4, wacky adventure Day of the Tentacle Remastered and survival sim This War of Mine: The Little Ones are up for grabs. The former is also on Vita, alongside The Swindle - which will be available on all three of Sony's platforms - and Titan Souls, which you'll be able to nab on PlayStation 4 as well. Elsewhere, PlayStation 3 users get Blazerush, while Vita owners will score Azkend 2.
Is PlayStation Plus starting 2017 right with this selection? Remember not to shoot the messenger in the comments section below.

You got to give it to Sony...they sure do know how to annoy some people x)
... I think that's a good selection? This War of Mine and Day of the Tentacle both scored 9s on this site...
It's ok. Not going to win any of the detractors over. Some good titles in there though. Looking forward to This War of Mine and The Swindle. Titan Souls is a real Marmite title.
I played Day of the Tentacle in 1993, which makes me feel very, very old. It's a classic. I'm not entirely sure how it holds up but I'm looking forward to a bit of nostalgia.
Not a bad month for ps4, but not for me. Day of the Tentacle just doesn't appeal and I just plain won't play This War of Mine. I'm sure it's excellent, but I can't handle anything like that. Too much.
Great line-up this month.
I have Titan Souls on PC and it's fantastic.
I've been putting off buying Day Of the Tentacle every time it came on sale because I was certain it would be a free plus game at some point,so it finally happening is joy.
I've also been wanting The Swindle to be a plus game because I'm sure I'll enjoy it but the mixed reviews always put me off buying it.
I've wanted to try This war of mine but never enough to buy it.
Never heard of Blazerush before but it's got good reviews and looks to be good arcadey fun.
Even Azkend 2 looks to be a competent if un-inspired Match three game, which is not a genre that's to everyone taste but I enjoy them and it looks decent at least.
Nothing for me, I am actually very surprised they didnt finally chuck Knack on since number 2 is coming this year
@get2sammyb Think it's a really good selection too.Very interested in Day Of The Tentacle and This War Of Mine. Will give the others a try too.
Seriously though,it's Christmas, surely everyone's got a few new games to get on with than moan about the ps plus selection?
The Swindle looks like a decent game, may try to play it before my PS+ sub expires in February.
@OldSchoolHeel yeah man. Anything involving kids getting hurt I'm not into. Someone I know was raving about That Dragon, Cancer. I'm sure it's phenomenal, and more power to the people who made it, but I just cannot bring myself to play something like that.
Very happy since I wanted to try those. I have access to the PS3 games now too.
well its not bad wanted to try this war of mine anyway
When does gravity rush 2 come out? I was hoping to get 1 remastered the same month.
Nice, I want to buy day of the tentacles remaster but I still have a lot of backlog, it's good that I don't have to buy it now. This war of mine also seems interesting, pretty good month I think.
@ztpayne7 It's out in January.
I'll try the little ones.
Not really been anything that good the last bunch of months.
Stories sucked, rapture was boring, table top racing had bad controls, the list goes on...
Can't the give something good or 1st party?
Titan Souls looks like a decent Zelda alternative. I'm giving it a shot.
Best selection for me in a long while! Of all these I only own Blazerush (which is great for local multi), and I have been wanting both Day of the Tentacle, Swindle and This War of Mine!
I usually own all games on offer apart from an indie or two.
Not as bad as last month but I think they should give at least one AAA game per month
@get2sammyb A 9 is all? You know it needs too be a 10 in order to make PS+ worthwhile.
@gmxs It would probably result in less sales of Knack 2. If I hadn't played Knack 1 I would be amoungst the oblivious and may have considered buying it. As it stands I unfortunately did and now I wouldn't consider it in a sale the first one was so bad.
@DualWielding Or at the very least push the boat out around Christmas/new year.
The games are pretty good for me, specially War of Mine and Titan Souls...but I can see many many many people being annoyed by this! And I can say that I understand why...triple A games have much more impact at first sight than indies....
But for me, since I platinumed Stories yesterday, indie games are fine for me
Day of the Tentacle? That's a great game to have in the collection.
Pleased about This War. Bought it but traded it to pay for VR! I'm happy with the selection.
Honestly if I hadn't just put in my 1 year code a few hours ago and saw this I might have thought about waiting until next month in the hopes of getting something better. I recognize Day of the Tentacle from way back when, but that's it.
On the bright side, I hadn't heard of Stories either, but that looks really good, downloaded it this morning, so maybe 1 of these will be a gem as well.
Edit - OK, no gems for me next month, but DotT might be a good test for my PS TV connection while my kids are playing on the PS3 or Wii U.
Good selection for the Vita!
@get2sammyb What a shame.
Really happy with this month!
I almost picked up a retail copy of This War of mine last month and I almost pulled the trigger on Titan Souls for Vita as that was discounted in the January sale.
Tentacle Remastered I would have never bought, but I'll take it for free. Seems to be a critics favorite.
Probably saved about £15. Over a third of the subscription paid for in the first month of 2017
@Kyroki me too! cannot wait.....for the sadness
Good news for me, I like all these though when I will play I have no idea.
Not interested. I'm sorry but these kind of games just simply don't interest me.
@Totaldude911 It's not a zelda alternative, it's a boss rush style game. Very challenging, but rewarding once you beat a tough boss.
I really like Titan Souls.
Already have titan souls on PC but I'll gladly except a portable version. Almost bought War of Mine on steam sale, glad I waited! Friendly reminder for anyone who loves RPGs and has an X1, Lost Odyssey is Free for the next couple days on Live, grab it!
Pretty darn good. Have Titan Souls but the rest were on my to do list so .... YAY!!!!
Great lineup. Day of the Tentacle is one of my all time favourite games (so of course I own it already). That hamster puzzle is genius.
Looking forward to This War of Mine and Titan Souls, especially the latter game on the Vita. Biggest issue is finding time what with all the bloomin' Lego games I have to play with the kids!
@AFCC
The problem is Sony could put great games like Sleeping Dogs and Killzone up there one month and then the next inFamous and Sleeping Dogs and people would still b*tch.
I honest to god think Sony should just stop doing free monthly games. There would be much less disappointments that way.
I don't play online & only renewed my PSN membership last January in the hope that there would be some good monthly titles. Other than games I'd already bought before they were offered free I've not downloaded a single one of the utter crap they've shovelled out of their stable. I definitely will not be renewing my membership as I've given them £40 for literally nothing.
Give up, Sony or stop taking the piss out of us. Daylight robbery!
@Gamer83 Sleeping Dogs was already on PS3 plus, so I hope they don't do that.
But yeah I get your point...But people complain less if there's a triple A game leading the plus giveaway
@AFCC
That's true. I've posted in the past that maybe the best strategy, since the console is now heading into its fourth calendar year on the market, would be to have one of the two games be an AAA and the other to be an indie. It wouldn't stop all the complaining but I'd agree with you that it probably lessens the anger to some degree.
@Tenacious-P Give up, Sony or stop taking the piss out of us. Daylight robbery!
Haha, maybe you should broaden your horizons and play some of the games. Off the top of my head Grimms tale, resident evil 1, gone home and actual sunlight have been on the service in the last 6 months - that's £25 worth of stuff right there, included in the psplus subscription games I would recommend to most game playing adults. How is it daylight robbery?
I've just found a 12 month renewal for under £39 = £3.25 per month. Haha Daylight robbery that's a good one.
This War of Mine is fantastic. I have it on PC and had a great time with it.
Day of the tentacle is always cool!
Haven't played This War of Mine yet but I've heard its excellent. I love Day of The Tentacle, its one of Tim Schafer's finest works. Getting the remastered version free is brilliant and I fully recommend it to anyone that's a fan of old school adventure games like Monkey Island. If anyone's played the Telltale games then Day of The Tentacle was an incredible game at the peak of the genre. Titan souls is a really good bonus this month. I've got it on Steam and the graphics are beautiful, even on my dated laptop screen. The gameplay's fluid and its reminiscent of old Zelda games with the puzzle like approach to each boss. This is one hell of a selection this month even if it lacks a AAA although that's not necessarily a bad thing. People seem to be annoyed that they're given indies but a big developer doesn't mean a good game.
It seems like Sony would be pushing hard right now to get people to subscribe as many people's subscriptions end in November- January (black Friday & Christmas). Now would be a good time to throw in a AAA title. Mine ends on the 5th and I won't be renewing my subscription.
This War of Mine seems the most impressive of the bunch! Day of the Tentacle is promising and portable, but I doubt I'll be investing my time in more visual novels when I'm finally catching up with Ace Attorney Dual Destinies.
Azkend looks simply okay, I like these match puzzles and they're good for brief subway sessions. Titan Souls, though? Wow, I actually managed to guess an upcoming PS Plus game for once. Wasn't at the top of my Vita IGC wishlist (oh well, Neptunia is on sale now anyway), but is certainly something I've been curious about since seeing some trailers. The Swindle looks interesting as well.
Mixed feelings about BlazeRush - I considered it on sale among the local coop games, but it seemed like a PS Plus candidate... and voila! Except it's on PS3 so I can't play it. XD
!!! Awesome!!! War of mine! Tentacles AND titan! Ive wanted all of these! Not sure what swindel is.
@Tenacious-P So if you don't play online why would you pay for a service you don't use? That be like me buying a month bus pass and then driving my car everywhere and complaining that the bus company robbed me.
@Gamer83
Haters will always be around, right? But they could tone down the complaints with more AAA games...that should be happening right now since the console has been around for quite some time!
Well im looking forward trying Titan Souls on Vita but between trying to platinum XV, finhish WoFF, sit down nd play through TLG properly and theb Gravity Rush 2 i wont be playing much Plus Games probably till April.
Pretty sure Sony said they were going to sort out the issue where when a game has recently been on offer, it's not included as part of PS Plus as people get a little narked when you think it's a good sale, just for it to be free a few days later.
I almost bought Titan Souls so lucky i have been busy of late and forgot. Granted, it's only a few quid, but i'm sure Shu mentioned this a while back. Can't find anything on the web so I might have just made that all up.
Titan Souls looks really good and DotT will be great as well. Just in the middle of playing through Grim Fandango and Broken Ago so this will be perfect for when those two are out of the way!
Good month, i'd say!
Well I do want this war of mine, rest eh.
Lets just say another month that I will not bother downloading and/or wasting disc space on. The PS trailer on youtube is 'disliked' by nearly 4:1 so it seems more are 'unhappy' with these too. If youtube can be used as 'evidence' like it was for CoD in nearly every article, then why not use it for this too?
Makes me wonder if Sony are trying to get the negative reaction - at least its a reaction...
My understanding is that Tim Schaeffer makes critically acclaimed games which just don't sell. That's why we end up being given them on plus. We've had Broken Age, Grim Fandango, Brutal Legend (iirc, and it's the only game he's done which I liked), and now Day of the Tentacle. Each time, people have been mostly unhappy about it.
Now, I know that these games have their fans, and that's great, but why force it on everyone else? If I was at a party I wouldn't put a Dark Throne album on, no matter how good it is. Sony need to look into how plus is run, as seemingly nobody is completely happy. Just get rid of the ps3 and vita games. They're largely redundant now.
Bring back the voting every month, offer movie or ps now rentals instead of games, or alternatively just do away with it altogether and take down the pay wall to playing online.
That's my idea anyway.
Dont get the hate. Feel sorry for Sony every month for all the abuse they get. Really excited for This War of Mine and have wanted to buy titan souls for a while but the alleged difficulty kept putting me off. Day of the tentacle is a classic that I played countless times back in the day so of course bought day one. Although I have already platted it, I am delighted more people have an opportunity to try it. Much rather these games than Knack.
I do understand why people are upset about titan souls if they bought in January sale mind
@THRILLHOU The thing is, the payment requirement is for online play. The Plus games and Plus discounts are considered bonuses. Live had you paying all of last gen for online play only, and only introduced games with gold to stay competitive with PS+.
That's not to say that the services haven't evolved overtime (and peoples expectations with it), but it is worth remembering. I do agree though, PS+ needs to be reviewed somehow.
@Rob_230 To a degree I can understand the hate. Back on the PS3, PS+ offered the best free games a month and a lot of the time these were newer AAA titles. Of course online gaming was free so they had to have an incentive to buy PS+. Over 3years into PS4 now, we are getting just 'indie' games and whilst I am not a fan of these myself, they are not the same quality or quantity as a older AAA game. By quality I am not referring to story/depth/emotion etc which these can have and by quantity I refer to the options like campaign and MP, range of MP, duration of experience etc. Its possible to complete both games in a weekend. I don't want this to turn into a debate about the merits of Indie/Arcade games and why they are 'better/worse, more fun, unique or not' etc than AAA games. Would you rather have something like AC4:Black Flag or one of the AC Chronicle games? That's essentially what this boils down too and the closest illustration of my point. You could use a 'free PSN pass' thats given with some games to play and finish the monthly offerings in a weekend and not worry about it lapsing and losing access to these.
People may not have expected a AAA game every month but its fair to assume that most expected more than we appear to be getting and maybe not as 'new' as they were on PS3. A lot of PS+ owners only have a PS4 too so the PS3/Vita offerings are pointless.
There are a lot of old XB360 gamers who have bought a PS4 and don't see an issue with paying for online and the free games are just a bonus - similar to the GwG. However on GwG, owners of XB1's get 4 games a month - 2 BC XB360 games as well and certainly over the past few months, they have offered more AAA games too so it looks like they are getting a better value deal. This again could make PS4 owners a bit more disgruntled than they maybe would.
Being honest though, how many people would buy PS+ just for the IGC? I know if they had 'options' like 1 (IGC and Store Discounts - no online) for £20 a year, 2 (online only) for £20 a year & 3 (both 1 and 2 combined) for £35 a year (or some similar pricing scheme), I would opt for option 2 as the IGC and Store discounts are not appealing to me at the moment. It maybe a great option as that could make Sony offer better IGC games as an incentive to pay more - but doubt they would as that could also lose them revenue.
By comparison, if MS offered a similar structure, I would buy option 3 because I get 4 games a month (albeit 2 are 'old XB360 games' I can play on my XB1) and often have games I want to play. I don't tend to buy digitally so Store discounts are not an incentive. In the years I have owned Gold and PS+, I have bought 1-2 games in a sale and saved an extra £2-3 over the non-subscriber sale price.
I own Killzone, Infamous, ACiv (thanks to GwG) anyway so offering these wouldn't be necessarily advantageous to me. I would still prefer to see these offered as it raises the profile and impression of IGC. Chances are that the month Killzone is offered, the MP is actually worth playing as people give it a go - may even lead to increased purchases of DLC too bringing in revenue for Sony and GG. It would also make people more inclined to buy PS+ out of desire rather than necessity (for online) and more optimistic and hopeful for the future offerings too.
Looking to play both of these titles so another great month for me. I find it rediculous that people would rather the likes of Knack instead of these smaller titles that are critically well received just because these titles didnt get a retail release.
A good game is a good game whether its made by a small team or a massive outfit.
@BAMozzy clearly you need to try more indie titles because the idea that they offer less content or quality than a AAA (whatever that means) is completely wide of the mark.
For example, I havent played many games in 2016 that had better art design than Inside, I am still playing Spelunky and Binding of Isaac after years of buying them while many retail games sit unfinished on my shelf. How about the depth of Banner Saga, Salt and Sanctuary or Darkest Dungeon? These games offer far more depth and longevity than many retail titles.
What needs to happen is for people to stop trying to classify games, the word Indie shouldn't be seen as an intimation of quality in any way, in fact, the only characteristic that word does bring to mind to me is novel gameplay mechanics which you rarely find in big budget, risk adverse projects.
The word Indie needs to disappear from the gaming lexicon, it means nothing as far as the characteristics of a game are concerned other than being suggestive of the size of the dev team; this bares no relevance on the quality of the title.
Pretty crap selection i'll try em for 5 minute's and then probably never play em again, just like last month's, and the month's before, but at less than £5 a month I can't really complain.
very good month IMO. I have always loved my plus games. Before i own plus, i only play fps and racing games. since then, i have broaden my gaming experiences to different genres that otherwise i'd never buy . Don't Starve, Tropico, Mercenary Kings, Rocket League, Outlast just to name a few. I'm sure this month will continue to surprise me
Wonder if the whiners will be happy with at least 4 games out of probably 24 released in 2017? I reckon if these games were given FREE the whiners will continue to whine 😓 I feel sorry for the parents, friends and work mates which have to put up them day after day!! Day of tentacle here we play!
@DualWielding Yeah for €50 keep dreaming.
Games are fine
Meh!
If you are happy with the selection you are psplus.
If you are negative about the selection you are psminus.
If you have a wii u you are a pstaker.
@Lovespuds I was trying to avoid this debate!
I agree that Indie is almost seen as a derogatory term these days and seems to encompass the 'Arcade' games ('smaller' games made by an established team - like AC Chronicles, Child of Light, Far Cry: Blood Dragon to name a few.). There are also some stand-alone DLC content that gets lumped in with these as well - Infamous First Light, Wolfenstein: the Old Blood and Saints Row 4: Gat out of Hell for example. No doubt Uncharted 4: The Lost Legacy will be joining these too.
I certainly don't need to play more 'Indie' games to know that some have more charm, a unique style, Other ways of telling a story etc. I would not say though that Inside, like Limbo, had better Art Design than something like Uncharted, Doom etc. I can understand why people may have a more emotive connection to these stories than some AAA titles but as far as visuals go, they are. at most, more creative with limited resources and are a lot less technically taxing by shifting away from 'reality' that AAA games seem to be moving towards. That doesn't make them bad or worse for it of course.
Games like Rocket League offer 100's if not more hours of game-play but there is no denying its a lot more simplistic than something like CoD or most other AAA MP games. Not saying that simplistic is 'Bad' or 'worse' as some people like its simplicity. Just because its simplistic doesn't mean its not 'difficult to master' either.
There are a number of 'indie' games that offer AAA type game-play - Van Helsing is similar to Diablo 3 in a lot of ways so I know that Indie games can offer something similar. I also know that we have very few AAA 2D platformers - either shooting, puzzle or combinations - only one I can think of is Rayman. The indie scene caters for this. Same with twin stick top down shooters, walking sims, top down and/or Mario Kart style racers etc etc - many of the 'old school' gaming types are catered to with the indie/arcade market place - including many that use the old 8/16bit artstyles too.
I am not denying that some of these games can be a lot more 'fun' and in some cases outlast many AAA games in terms of playtime. Most though can be completed in a weekend.
I am not going to get into an argument though about this but I would rather play something like Killzone (which I already have) than ALL of this month's offerings - in fact more than any of the games you mentioned. I do agree that 'indie' should be dropped (maybe use Arcade instead) and these do tend to fill a hole in the market - mostly the old school style of gaming.
I do not understand why people think that we should be getting AAA ttiles with the small fee we pay each month. Along with all the other benefits we get the games are probably the smallest most meaningless part of the PS Plus package. I would prefer to see indie titles supported than any AAA offering.
@dryrain Well for those of us who have last gen Sony consoles the free games are a major feature of PS+.
Pretty good month! I've wanted This War of Mine and Titan Souls since they came out, but it's hard for me to justify paying for single player indie games since I play almost exclusively multiplayer games nowadays. They may not be AAA games, but they look fun.
Eww. Glad I didn't resubscribe this month. Thankfully, my PS4 will be busy with GR2 after the 20th regardless,
@dryrain From my perspective, I see them more as a 'Bonus'. I didn't bother with PS+ until I got my PS4 and only bought PS+ for online gaming - much like I did with MS's Gold service. It has made owning both consoles a bit more expensive than last generation. The fact I had Gold and not PS+ was a factor in my decision to upgrade to the XB1 first as it actually worked out cheaper for me at the time. Anyway that's a bit of a digression.
Personally I would prefer to see more AAA games than we currently get - Not necessarily even 1 every month - although I would like 2 every month by choice but realise that's unrealistic. I would rather see 'indie' games promoted and sold - maybe at a good discount - rather than given away for nothing. I know Sony must pay 'something' to the developers to offset them but I think if Sony did a 'promotion' on a few featured 'indie games and sold them at a 'special' discount (maybe waved some/all of their profits from sales), that would be more beneficial to the developers in the long run. Instead of giving away 2 indie games every month, they could feature 4-5 indie games in this way and this could bring in more revenue for the indie developers. When Rocket League reached the 12m players, 7m of those were PS4 players who downloaded for free! The game was also on PC so it was those that actually bought the game. I can't see that Sony paid the developers enough to offset 7m lost sales. Maybe it wouldn't have reached 7m PS4 players but maybe it would have if it was promoted and sold at a discount and helped the developers out more financially.
Its inevitable that PS+ and Gold are compared. They were compared last gen too and Sony offered the better games even though the two services were very different. I remember a lot of Sony fans bragging about the games PS+ offered compared to GwG and a lot of Xbox fans feeling 'angry' because the games they were offered were regarded as 'weaker'. Now the services are very similar, GwG tends to offer the better games - of course that can come down to personal taste of course and MS only offer 4 compared to PS+'s 6.
In terms of 'value' though, I get more value from Gold because I find more games I want to download and play but I still buy both services primarily for online gaming and will continue to subscribe regardless. I don't find the 'bonuses' of PS+ as appealing.
Decent, although I think it shows that they know they can get away with it right after Christmas when everyone has new games and will care less about what's on PS+.
I still have FFXV, TLG, REmake, RE0, RE5 and am also eyeing a return to Tales of Zestiria after I finish FF. I also just got Tyranny on PC and Torment: Tides of Numenera, RE7 and Tales of Berseria come out early next year. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
In terms of value, I play online and get all the fringe benefits like discounts and such.
However it is very rare that I download the games.
I liked the look of Rapture and it turned out quite good.
The last game I downloaded and enjoyed prior was NBA, mainly as Im a Basketball fan but also because its the only true sports title Ive ever seen on the IGC in the PS4s lifetime.
I dont enjoy games at all if I have no initial interest before hand and every game Ive tried anyway has been very much a disappointment.
And Im not a believer that its just AAA people want or annoyed at, but that its clear Sony is in fact NOT listening to its user base.
I find it hard to believe that many of the offerings are what people want, rather they are just what Sony wants to offer.
Keeping your customer happy is a vital part of making profit.
