With a lineup including Yakuza 0 and Resident Evil 7 (among others), it's no surprise that the PlayStation 4 was the best selling console in the United States during January. According to the latest NPD report, Sony's system continued its good run, outpacing the competition yet again during the first month of 2017. No numbers have been revealed, but it sounds like the system was down slightly year-over-year, though sales are generally always slow after the holidays.
As is the case with NPD these days, the software top ten will not be revealed until next week, where we can probably expect to see Capcom's aforementioned survival horror on top. We'll of course bring you all of the news as and when we get it.

Let see in April about march sells if switch will win in March compare to ps4 & xbone. I think that it's gonna be ps4 then switch then xbone
@tonyp1987 Nah, the switch will definitely sell more than ps4. No doubt about it. The pre-orders alone show that.
If Switch isn't the best-selling console during its launch month then Nintendo have a huge problem. It will sell out, and there's no way anything will come close to it in just an average month.
It's the summer and holidays that will be most interesting.
@naruball nice profile and after thinking your right I tried to pre-order last night and they were sold out but makes me wonder like how many units were made?
Also do you think ps has another handheld in the works? I loved my vita but now I wonder will Sony use their tablet business and make a ps tablet edition?
Switch will win the first few months, depending on supply and so on but you have to wonder how they will fare in the holiday bundle seasons
@tonyp1987 No. They won't do another handheld.
Pwned
@tonyp1987 Thanks
Nintendo said that the first shipment (which is sold out) is 2m.
Nice. I'd sooner peg January PS4 sales on the February line-up. Nioh and Horizon are definitely system sellers.
@get2sammyb I think it depends on the sells on the switch which might make Sony change their mind. Sony loves money and if the money is there they might go for it.
@tonyp1987 Nah. I think Sony's more or less conceded Japan at this point, and I don't think they believe there's a market for handhelds in the West anymore.
Even if Switch blows up, it'll take years to develop a new piece of hardware from scratch.
@get2sammyb I think it can sell in the West if they can pull off ps3ish/ps4 graphics.
@tonyp1987 Disagree. It would be the Vita all over again.
People forget that, while the 3DS has done well, it's only sold 65 million units. That's a decent tally, but 20 million of that comes from Japan, and it's a huge decline compared to the DS.
PS4 will overtake 3DS soon. And the 3DS has every big handheld brand you can think of: Pokemon, Mario, Monster Hunter, etc. There's just not the same market for them anymore.
@get2sammyb but what if it's a hybrid ps4 store/ android store on the same platform. You can play android games and ps games on one system and hook it to the tv. Ps tablet would have the whole ps library available digital and also the android store available. I think it could work.
What Sony need to work on is winning the Scorpio release month. Now that would be impressive!
@get2sammyb Yeah even the Nintendo boss has said Nintendo aren't currently developing a 3DS successor.
(He maybe being cunning though and making a Gameboy successor!)
Ps4 is the new ps2
Also, I miss timestamp on news that says "xH ago", rather than showing the time (7.30am, etc), I like "xHours ago" more.
No surprise with the quality list of exclusives just recently.
It'll be interesting to see if the Switch does well.
The Glitch looks terrible, I own ever Nintendo system (except the NES) and even I don't want one.
It looks like a Japanese-only product based on the January reveal and that's probably the only place it will sell.
Meanwhile MS basically has no exclusives despite strong hardware coming, so I think they're screwed too.
Sony hasn't made one bad move this Gen and they are cleaning house.
PS4 is also nearing 4.5 million in Japan.
@get2sammyb Yeah, looking at how badly Vita turned out, I wouldn't have high hopes for another Sony handheld.
I wonder if it will reach 60mil sales by the end of the year
@Mahe wow is it really that low in Japan? Are they in a terrible recession over there or they just love those mobile games now I wonder
Language -Tasuki-
Well done. We are on the winning side!
@Barnacle PS4 was released in Japan in February 2014, so its third birthday in Japan is just coming up. Also, PS4 started slow there but has been gaining momentum, and Japan hasn't been a huge home console country for a long time now. But it's still something like 8 % of the worldwide PS4 total, so that's not bad at all.
