Well, well, well, we were wondering when this sequel would show up. Spotted on retailer Target's website, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is supposedly the sequel to the well received Lord of the Rings title Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The leak consists of the game's box art, which looks rather legitimate, and honestly, we expect imminent confirmation.
The leak - if true - comes as no real surprise. Shadow of Mordor won numerous Game of the Year awards when it released back in 2014, and it sold pretty well, too. Publisher Warner Bros. was always going to have another crack at it, and we have to admit that we're totally fine with that; the first title wasn't perfect, but it laid some incredibly solid foundations that can certainly be built upon.
Are you happy to see this potential sequel? Try not to get possessed in the comments section below.

Let's do it!
might have to give the first another go, it got caught up in my backlog and never finished it so i sold it, had it on PS3 so i might get the PS4 version
Is it so hard for a fully open world, explorable Middle-Earth game?
I want to visit Mirkwood forest, the Lonely Mountain and Hobbiton...
The closest I can get is Lego Dimensions.
Bring it on!
I tried playing through the first one three times. I kept running into a problem or glitch each time and had to restart. Hopefully it goes better if I try again, but I'm not exactly eager to
Was very impressed with the first one.
Hope so! Have a shiny platinum trophy for the first...great game, felt very fresh
Wouldn't surprise me if Sony have marketing on it due the first one getting a surprise Pro patch.
I really wanted to like shadow of mordor. But I really didn't. I liked its systems (nemesis system is brilliant) and I liked it on paper, but it was just missing something. Either way, I think a sequel is a great thing.
Still haven't played the first one...
@FullbringIchigo It's often on sale for practically nothing, definitely pick it up. The PS3 version is barely the same game as the PS4 version so if you enjoyed it on PS3, the PS4 version will blow you away!
This is great news. Er, a great leak?
I loved the first game but it definitely got repetitive after a while. Theres so much potential for an even better sequel.
good news the first game wasn't high on my wanted list but when I got it I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it
The first one was very original and enjoyable and if a sequel is indeed on the way then It will be another game to add to my long list of "I want" games..
@glassmusic yeah i enjoyed it, wasn't there a GotY edition released?
@Gold_Ranger Ever heard of LOTRO?
I absolutely loved the first. If not for Alien Isolation it would have been my GotY. It wasn't an original game by any stretch of the imagination (besides the brilliant nemesis system) but it did it so well. Really want this to be true.
I'm just surprised no one has attempted to mimic the nemesis system yet. Has such potential.....
@neuroticbiotic
Is it on the PS4?
Is there a subscription fee?
How much is the base game?
March 8th i guess
@FullbringIchigo I have to give the first one another go too. I remember picking it up when I had a ton of other games to play through. I played it for about 3 hours but got to invested in other games so I traded it in. I'll definitely have to pick it up again this summer.
@Gold_Ranger It's an MMO on PC, free to play with optional subscription/expansions. You can earn in game currency to unlock the packs, you can go to all the areas but the quests tend to be locked behind said currency. It's pretty solid, but dying fast.
@wiggleronacid that's pretty much what i did, still i just looked and the GotY Edition is less than £20 so i might pick it up
Sweet. I really enjoyed Shadow of Mordor so this great news. I love its brutal combat.
@FullbringIchigo There was, and that's the version that's always on sale. Pretty sure it's gone for $6 or $8 a handful of times!
Thank. No pc to run it though.
I appreciate the recommendation.
Wanted to like the first...hated it.
Interesting!!
Enjoyed the game on PS3, eventhough it lagged like a mofo ^^. I still pushed forward and scored a shiny plat. Kept wondering how it would play on the stronger PS4. Bought the digital version and played through the game a 2nd time. That plat was a much more pleasant experience.
If this news ends up being true, I'll keep an eye for it. But before I buy the sequel I want to know if it lives up to its potential.
@Gold_Ranger preaching to the choir brother!! I'd love a LOTR game made by CD Project Red, if that was ever announced I couldn't pre order it quick enough!
I was so disappointed by the first, wanted to love it and was very excited for it but found the world and story terribly bland, combat was fun and the nemesis system was cool but the world really let it down
It had problems - world wasn't great, missions samey etc. but I loved the nemesis system and the sword play. It felt very LOTR in that respect. I will buy the next one for sure.
Not played it, but the nemesis system sounds like a great idea.
The first one bored me as it just felt like pieces of other games stitched together for a slightly odd experience, which was a shame as it appeared to have some really great ideas of its own. I'd be interested in the sequel if they can come up with their own ideas and gameplay
@Gold_Ranger lego lord of the rings on ps3 and lego the hobbit on ps4 are open world lotr games, and it's probably bigger than lego dimensions 😜
Good game the first one. Combat was fun and very LOTR but as others keep saying, the map story and missions were pretty crap. I platinumed it and can't remember a thing about the story! Better customisation and a map where you can actually affect the area's around you would be great to go along with the nemesis system..
@darkswabber
I can only stand so much lego before it gets overwhelming.
I' ll pass.
Wasn't very impressed by the first one, which was nothing more then Arkham City with a fresh coat of paint.
Not only that, but everything you did felt inconsequential, because the orcs kept respawning.
You had no impact on the world.
Was bored of the game within 3 hours.
I agree with most on here - the nemesis 'system' was good, slightly overblown by critics in my option as it was randomised, and the combat was ok, but the world was too bland and repetitive to be defined as Middle Earth.
Games like Horizon Zero Dawn have raised the bar in so many respects including the world itself - can't wait for my copy tomorrow - that I find the GOTY awards for Shadow of Mordor bizarre.
It was never that, just a good combat game in a poor game world....as a Tolkien fan harsh but true.
@JoeBlogs i LOVE Lord of the Rings, i have ever since i read it in English class at school
Damn, still haven't got around to picking up the original. Really need to change that!
I love shadow of mordor. It's a game that actually challenges u at times. Nemesis system was awesome. The world could of been better maybe, but it worked for the story it was telling. Now a full on middle earth open world game could be unbelievable....I would love to see it, maybe with more character customization
I got a little bit excited when I saw this...then remembered I have it in my backlog and haven't started it yet. sigh
Not enough time to play my collection.
The game was a great mix of Assassin's Creed and Batman gameplay, hopefully this'll deliver.
