Despite reports to the contrary, Activision has decided to keep its Skylanders series on life-support. The franchise's most recent instalment Skylanders: Imaginators flopped hard, prompting speculation that the company was about to cull the series. But during an earnings call, the organisation outlined its plans to keep the property alive -- although there'll be no new entry this year.
Instead, the firm will focus on further content for the aforementioned Imaginators, while also developing a new mobile game and commissioning a second season of Netflix series Skylanders Academy. Presumably the year out will give Activision time to consider how it plans to bring the franchise back in 2018 -- but will you miss the series while it's on temporary hiatus?

I won't miss it
Activision, if this gets killed for a Spyro Remaster then I will be in complete support of it.
All these toy to life nonsense games are dead now that people have finally seen through the con. Look past the toys and all your left with is a pretty poor game if we're honest, compared to the 3D platformer/adventure games that existed before these took over. My stepson has a huge collection that is almost impossible to sell for even a fraction of the quite ridiculous amount of money his dad splashed out on it. At retail it must have totalled somewhere close to a grand for what is basically 5 c**p games and now he's struggling to get even £100 back for it
I actually play these games with my son, now nine.
Vicarious Visions killed the series with the horrible Superchargers entry in 2015.
Last year's Imaginators games was actually pretty good, although a bit short.
This year's game would have been a VV game again, Activision canceled that which is no loss.
Toys for Bob makes the real Skylander games.
Games got far too greedy, wanting money silly little bits of plastic crap, bout time people cotton on.
My kids play these games too, I don't think they're horrible by any means. I feel there's a bit of over-saturation though. Maybe Activision finally figured out that pumping out games from their franchises every single calendar year is actually a bad thing. They've managed to turn all of their big franchises into dust because of greed.
I'll call it now, in two holidays we'll see a reboot of the series. I don't know if it'll do the figure thing anymore but the characters are really cool and they've built up an army!
I'm ok with this. I feel the series could use a little time between entries. I had platted the previous four but I am struggling with finishing Imaginators. I think the series still has a lot to offer but there is certainly some series fatigue that could use a year or a year and a half off.
@AlphaJaguar I wish that would happen so much. But it was probably an exercise for them to do a Crash comeback, so I wouldn't expect them to do a Spyro remake. Which sucks.
@DerMeister I'd vouch to disagree, I feel as though the success of the Crash remasters would be a valid means to keep Spyro relevant (if Skylanders gets canned). After all, Skylanders was originally a Spyro game.
@AlphaJaguar Actually Skylanders was not originally a Spyro game. Spyro was added in at the last minute after the game recieved poor results from test panels. They then decided to use Spyro as the face of the franchise and when they did people were more eager to buy t because of Spyro.
I don't think their problem is going to be solved with an animated series. It's not that people don't know what Skylander's is. It's the fact that people would probably rather get the entire game when they pay full price.
@AlphaJaguar I hope that would be the case, but that also depends on how well N.Sane Trilogy sells. Activision are a very money minded publisher in a business full of them, and I wouldn't put it past them if they reject a new Spyro if they feel Crash doesn't do good enough, which could be a high mark them.
Also, off topic, but sweet Armor King avatar. Nice to see another Tekken fan around here.
You know, it's interesting to consider that Vicarious Visions will be shipping the Crash remaster/reboot later this year.
That's the same company that would have made this year's Skylanders game.
Maybe Activision had planned to give Skylanders a rest, as of the minute last year's game came out...
