Tonight marks the Champions League final, as Real Madrid attempt to win a record second successive European crown against Italian giants Juventus in the Welsh capital Cardiff. It’s the biggest club event in the footballing calendar – it’s a bit like the Super Bowl of soccer but spanning an entire continent rather than a single country.
And German satellite broadcaster Sky Deutschland has teamed up with Sony in order to show the match with PlayStation VR. Now there are a few catches: you need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber first and foremost, and this is only limited to Germany. In the UK, the match is being shown in virtual reality as well, but only via BT Sport’s app.
There are other limitations as well: the experience is limited to a 180-degrees view, and presumably won’t be 3D either. That said, this is the future of virtual reality in our opinion, and while we’re only just beginning to scratch the surface of what’s possible, we reckon that the future will be bright if the investment continues to flow.

Don't care that much about football, but I would have liked to have a shot at it. Germany exclusive though
I would definitely have given this a go if it were available in the UK
Fairly pathetic then.
As a german living in the U.K. who owns a PSVR & will be watching the final tonight; this sucks.
Come on Juve!
I have maintained that things like this can give VR its value. Its not just Champions League of course but being able to attend any event, visit any museum, theatre, wonders of the world etc, all from the comfort of your home is an area I think Sony could expand on and give more value to PSVR.
Of course we can all watch the Football from the comfort of our home but VR can give us the the experience of feeling like we actually sat in the stadium. Extend that out to being in the crowd at Sony's E3 presser, able to wander around the conference, able to visit Sony's massive ground floor space and its booths, watch and maybe even able to demo a few of the games as if we were actually there...
When things like this finally do come to VR - its a matter of time I think- then I will invest in VR!!
As for the match tonight, I don't know who I want to win. It will be interesting to see if one of the toughest defences to breach can withstand one of best attacking threats.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi What wonderful insight on the topic.
I'm hoping Juve win for Buffon after the career he's had.
@adf86 Please accept my sincere apology for expressing my opinion on the lack of support outside of Germany.
YouTube appears to show VR support here in UK, doesn't state that it's compatible with PSVR though.
Watching it on the BT box, hilariously the live stream from BT on YouTube has been buffering for 2 hours, good luck trying to watch in VR. Like I said, fairly pathetic.
Why Germany only? Neither of the playing teams is German.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Apology accepted but maybe next time try making a comment that doesn't come across as someone making a dickish comment for the sake of it.
@sinalefa Well in the UK, BT paid for the 'rights' to show the Champions League. They may get advertising money based on viewers. Maybe even use the viewing figures to get more money from advertisers in the future - reach 'x' million people etc. Regardless, BT own the rights anyway in the UK
@adf86 it was a straight forward opinion and had nothing to do with reproductive organs, you should probably just refrain from personal attacks, it comes across as dickish
@ApostateMage Ronaldo for the win. 😀
As I've said multiple times. Sony 100% have to do this for E3. Even if it's too much to live stream it, they should at least record it in 4K and let us download it.
@SoulChimera even though PSVR supports 3D movies they still don't sell 3D movies on PSN store, they don't have a clue.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi It's infuriating to think of the amount of cool opportunities they have to provide content for the PSVR, but choose not to.
