We like the idea behind Code Vein, but we're yet to see any footage that really makes us excited to play it. Unfortunately, this latest boss fight gameplay does nothing for us either. When the project was first revealed, it was described as anime Dark Souls, and as much as we hate to compare anything to From Software's series these days, it's near impossible not to do that here. Going by this new video, this is Dark Souls with bland environments, combat that appears to lack punch, and a worse art style.
We're hoping that Code Vein proves our early impressions wrong and ends up being a great action role-playing release, but again, we're just not sold based on what we've seen so far.
Do you agree, or are you about to tell us how horribly wrong we are? Please don't spill any blood in the comments section below.

Looks boring.
I'm as big a souls geek as anyone, but this just lacks something. I'm not sure if it's the art style or the fact that it looks like a knock off, but my hype train has derailed. All of the hype has spilled out, and has run into the gutter, contaminating the land.
I'm in trouble with the hype rail authority now, and expect a hefty fine.
What I mean is, it looks gash.
boooooooooooooooooo
I'm not a Dark Souls fan anyway but this just looks dull.
Souls games aren't just combat, they have awesome environments, strong level design, and most of all deep world building lore. Code Vein seems to be lacking all three. The combat, and by extension difficulty, in Souls games are not the sole factors that make them great, yet so many souls-alikes seem to miss that.
I still have fate since there are worse copypaste clones out there (Akiba's Beat for example being a low budget Tales knock-off), but I agree that the game lacks of what made the souls games special. Like what Nox said, the Souls games are not just about the combat, but also the atmosphere, level design, tone and lore.
As of now, we still don't know much about the lore but the atmosphere and level design in the game so far is nothing breath-taking. Especially, when the gameplay is literally Dark Souls' but with the addition of vampiric abilities. Of course there are people going to defend the game probably because either: 1) they are hardcore Souls lovers and will defend any Souls like game (just as long it is on PC), 2)anime fans who defends any games' faults just with the excuse of "cute waifus", or 3)Bandai Namco fanboys who probably likes anime games like SAO or God Eater (seriously guys, Gun Gale online is NOTHING like God Eater).
Honestly, the only great Souls like game so far is Nioh, since atleast it gave some fresh new additions to prevent it from being just another "average Souls-like gameplay".
Admidettly, there's something...off about the fight. I guess my complaints are the following:
1)The boss theme, although it's good, just sounds unfitting for the boss in my opinion. Maybe because it would have sound better if it was used for when exploring a fantasy world or when fighting a boss in a turn-based RPG.
2)The AI of your ally is pretty...dumb. I have read that Louis (i think that's his name?) doesn't really fight much, which is dumb in games like these.
3)The animations when you get hit doesn't look too good, since it just stands still while moving the head a bit.
4)The combat, although isn't too bad compared the early trailer, it still doesn't have much impact compared to Dark Souls' combat or heck, even MHW's.
Even though I still have high hopes for it, I too hope for one thing that can actually impress me more.
@NoxAeturnus Pretty much spot on I think.
For me, Nioh has been the only game to carve out its own take on the formula with a lot of success, and I'd say a lot of that is down to it having an interesting setting/tone.
@ShogunRok Shamefully I still haven't tried Nioh, but I have heard a lot of good things. When I get to that back catalog one day...
@NoxAeturnus That's not too far back. lol Some of my back catalog are from the 80s.
Ugghh, well hopefully we get some better footage and they work on the animations, and have some more varied environments that we've yet to see...
It does look like it could get boring after awhile of seeing the same drab environments and experiencing the same things... I'll probably still buy it. I tend to at least like even the mediocre souls-likes.
@doctommaso Me too, but more games get added to it every year.
@NoxAeturnus Me too — try every week. lol
