@JohnnyShoulder as far as his work on DS9 & BSG goes, his main strength is operating in the shades of grey between good and evil… which could be perfect for God of War the more I think about it.
Dunno if anyone has mentioned this already, but the season 2 trailer for Severance dropped the other day...
I'm one of the few people that didn't gel with Season 1, and I don't currently have Apple TV+. I do have either 3 or 6 months free waiting to use, so will have it soonish.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
@JohnnyShoulder As not watching season 2 has never been an option after season 1, which I loved, I'm steering clear of trailers this time. Love the show! Exactly my kind of quirky and weird
Watched the first three episodes of the new Yakuza show. I'm enjoying it so far, but it's hard not to be disappointed by certain aspects. My main gripe is the characters as some of them are really different from the games. I feel a lack of respect for the source material by the show makers. Also, jumping between time periods is rather annoying. I get that they have to tell the backstory of the characters while maintaining a focus on the "main" story. But the Yakuza series is known for telling long stories, so trying to narrow down entire games into six episodes is not a good idea at all.
I'm still going to watch it as I just love Yakuza and Japanese TV shows in general. But it could've been so much better handled.
@LtSarge I was going to check it out this weekend, but the review on this very site has me hesitant. Question is, if you divorce it from the games, would it be worth watching in its own right? From the PushSquare review, it seems the answer is "no", but what would you say?
Interview with the Vampire is just so good. One of the best examples of an adaptation changing certain things while remaining totally true to the spirit of the book. Really loving season 2 now it’s finally dropped in the UK.
@FuriousMachine Considering my gripes are about the differences between the show and the games and that I'm enjoying it overall, I'd say that it's worth watching on its own right. It's not a terrible show by any means, it's just different.
@LtSarge Sounds good; then I'll still give it a try. I've played the games up until (and including) "Yakuza 3" and love them, but I am perfectly fine with the show not managing to channel the games properly as long as it is entertaining in and of itself
Just started For All Mankind. We tried it a couple of years back and stopped after the first episode as it didn’t grip us. We enjoyed it a bit more this time and are ploughing on… between the cast and Ronald D Moore as showrunner, I have high hopes.
Watching Jean-Claude Van Johnson on Freevee.
Pretty funny and he is quite willing to stand himself up.
One occasion had several goons waiting to gank him, the leader then says “let’s go in one by one as we don’t want to trip over each other”. Just like Assassins Creed.
So we’re now 4 eps deep on For All Mankind and it’s very good. Didn’t really feel much draw to the alt-history space-race plot, nor the period setting but the show is just so well done.
@colonelkilgore The first season is excellent (I threw around some hearty recommendations on here when it first aired) but by the time I had access to Apple TV again it had completely slipped my mind. I'll have to pick it back up again. I was so glad to read that you're a "DS9" fan - the back half of that run is the best that "Star Trek" has ever been.
I started watching "11.22.63" which is an adaptation of Stephen King's extremely entertaining time travel/Kennedy assassination conspiracy novel but gave up after 3 episodes. It was complete pants.
Just finished watching Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix. Pretty decent horror series for the spooky season. I would t say it's particularly scary, creepy definitely.
@LN78 yeah I agree, DS9 is my favourite Star Trek by some margin. It’s a tough one to get into as the first season is pretty poor but it really picks up in season 2.
@LN78 yeah good point. I’d actually like to watch the whole thing again… the last time I did so was around 15 years ago but I don’t think there is any chance that the missus would be up for it unfortunately.
@colonelkilgore I've had the whole series on DVD in the awesome blue clam shell cases since the day they came out. I really wish they'd do a "TNG" style HD upgrade but apparently because a ton of the (very primitive) digital effects were mastered in 480P it's very unlikely to happen, shy of an AI algorhythmic washover which would probably be disastrous. Damn shame.
@LN78 I think they’re on one of the various streaming services I have (either Netflix or Paramount+ I think) but like you say, the image quality is poor and it’s in 4:3 too, which I just can’t do anymore.
@colonelkilgore I would imagine Paramount +. I don't mind 4:3 pillarboxed video - as long as it isn't pan and scanned. Much better than artificially widescreened images, anyway. They did such a spectacular job on the "TOS" and "TNG" remasters that it's a shame they don't have the resources to do the rest - especially after wasting so.much money on dreck like "Discovery".
