If you're anything like this particular author, then you love your Japanese games. For as long as we dare to remember, the Tokyo Game Show -- essentially Japan's version of E3 -- has been a good indicator of how the nation's video game industry is doing. From Sony to Koei Tecmo and Square Enix to Bandi Namco, all the big players usually have something to share.
This year, the Tokyo Game Show starts in around a week from now, on the 21st September, and lasts until the 24th September. You can expect plenty of announcements, trailers, and gameplay videos -- but what are your thoughts on TGS? Is it one of your favourite gaming events, or do you struggle to care? Let us know if you're looking forward to the show in our polls, and then feel free to rant about Japanese culture in the comments section below.

Bring Monster Hunter and surprises!!!
P5 Enhanced would be awesome too.
The gameplay is sometimes ok, but I just can't get past the artwork style used in these titles. They look like they're aimed at 10 year olds.
Personally, I am. The show's obviously a lot more muted than it once was in its current guise, but I still suspect we'll see some cool games.
I've generally no interest in anything Eastern other than their video games. When I consider my top ten list of video games only one or two are Western.
But, the Eastern games I like the most tend to have at least some Western influence.
Best of both world, perhaps!
If sony is smart, they announce the new move controllers (with all analog control sticks) and sell them before or at the skyrim VR release.
Japanese games this year has seen such a great revival this year, can't wait to see what is announced.
Is it ok if I answer this after it's over?
I'm torn b/c JRPG are my favorite genre, but Squenix is killing me w/ it's silence on FF7R and KH3. And we still don't have a western date for DQ11. At least Level 5 gave us a date when they delayed NNK2. Which is good it got delayed b/c XC2 is Dec 1 and that will take me 2 months at least.
So I'm curious what will come out of it, but not caring enough to pay close attention. Have I mentioned Squenix is killing me?
I'm waiting for dragon crown pro
@Bread-Not-Toast Yup, early 2017 is insanely good for japanese game fan, from persona to yakuza 0 to nioh and gravity rush 2
@Sanctanox I think thats for ps5 and ps vr2.
Funnily enough, I actually enjoy the Japanese films, anime etc and a lot have inspired many western films too - I do like some of those set in more historic Japan than the more modern era. I don't have an issue with Japanese artstyle in games - some can be very western and lets not forget that games like Resident Evil were made by Japanese based developers. Nintendo also have a lot of Japanese games that are also very popular in western gaming too.
It really depends on the game, the story, the mechanics etc. I can't stand 'turn based' combat for example so I tend to avoid these - inc those 'western' games that may employ this - like Child of Light for example. Its not just 1 thing though and in general I would have to say that Japanese games aren't my 'thing'. Nioh for example looks more like something I would play but Yakuza and Monster Hunter are not.
Having seen the line-up of games expected at TGS, I can honestly say that not a lot appeals. VR seems to occupy around a third of the titles but not having a VR headset immediately rules out a third of the games. I can't say that what I have seen of VR so far would be enough to justify a purchase either. Detroit is obviously a more western title but its not on my list. The only game I am likely to purchase is CoD:WW2 and mostly for Zombies as the MP looks very dated - story might be ok too. I know that may sound poor, to only want CoD etc, but of the 7-10 games I want from Sept-Dec this year, CoD is my least anticipated title.
If a Japanese developer made a Japanese 'Witcher 3' set in a fantasy historic Japan with say shoguns replacing the different factions but had the grit, the side quests, Contracts, the action and combat, the impacting decisions etc etc I would almost certainly buy. A massive open world historic 'Japan' would look stunning and its not like feudal Japan wouldn't have a similar political landscape to the Witcher either.
Anyway I digress. Point is that many 'typically Japanese' games don't appeal but I can't say 'ALL' Japanese games don't and I am sure that a few people could easily forget the big selling franchises that are 'Japanese' like Resident Evil for example.
Is TGS all about Nintendo and Sony? I expect that Microsoft doesn't need to bother.
@legalstep I mean, they sold 63 (sixty-three) Xbox Ones in Japan last week, so...
Japanese games are what consoles have always been about ! I know things changed a lot but I still feel that way...and I hey, if 2017 served to remind us something, it's that there is nothing quite like a God-tier Japanese videogame:)
I had my fair share of jrpgs in my PS2 days and play a lot more western games nowadays. I am looking forward to Ni No Kuni 2 and Dark Arisen Remaster, though.
@legalstep More like all about Sony. I can't recall the last time Nintendo had a press conference at TGS, I don't think they ever had.
Not a jrpg fan though I do try (I struggle with turn based combat) but I think eastern games help give the gaming scene some flavour and some awesome devs. Bring it on...
@rjejr what do you mean silence on kh3? I thought they've actually brought a lot of news on it already this year. I'm kind of at the point where I just want a release date and launch trailer and I'm good.
For those saying Persona 5 Enhanced, what exactly would that mean? The only dlc is costume related - so I don't get what an enhanced version would offer.
@ztpayne7 release date
Yes I am looking forward to it and just give me a good game I don't care if its Japanese or whatever.
Not really interested. I don't do Japanese games, and there's little else reported to be shown that I'm interested in. Detroit is on my list, but I'll look up the new stuff afterwards.
Japanese video games have been my bread and butter for over 38 years now, so yeah, you could say I'm excited about TGS.
I'm sort of. It's another gaming conference so there's always the prospect of something exciting, however last year's was very uneventful.
@Tsurii Watch the language please!
Can't wait to hear about all things JRPG! Bring it on
@kyleforrester87 They make really good cars to and i love their electronics.
But a little more ontopic i just love their games the style gameplay i actually wanna see some turnbased stuff.
@Octane Yeah they typically do their own separate event Spaceworld or something. I don't know if they still do it.
@legalstep The last one was in 2001...
