Shadow of the Colossus comfortably sits in the Push Square Towers Hall of Fame – it’s, without a doubt, one of the greatest games ever made. So the fact that it’s being remade for the PlayStation 4 by conversion kings Bluepoint is exciting. However, the office is divided over whether this all-new version has lost some of its identity.
Fumito Ueda’s games have a very distinctive look, defined by their heavy use of fog and bloom. A lot of these effects were probably used to mask the limitations of the hardware at the time; Shadow of the Colossus pushed the PlayStation 2 far beyond its limits after all. But with the PS4 being a much more capable console, there’s no doubt that this remake has a different look to it.
Now, when considered in isolation it's clear that the game is looking stunning on Sony’s new-gen machine, but when you compare it to the PS2 version in these side-by-side videos, it is lacking an ethereal quality that made the original so memorable. We’re divided, but we’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject in the comments section below.

I'm so torn on this.
@get2sammyb I think Bluepoint are hitting the right balance, I think there would have been every temptation to over do the graphical fidelity but I didn't see that yesterday. They gave enough so game clearly looks new but is still very much SOTC.
Maybe they'll add a "PS2 filter" or something along those lines in the video options.
I feel like this remake does a perfect job of maintaining the artistic integrity while also making it feel fresh. It's not like other remasters where everything is just made shinier and given better textures. This still feels 100% like SotC in its style.
The music still give me chill even after all this year...
About the graphics, I like them both in the first video, I like the ps4 version better in the second video.
I never played it on PS2 but I’m looking forward to the PS4 version. I’ve always heard great things about it but never wanted to dig the PS2 out of the closet. I think the remake was intended for people like me. The PS2 graphics may be tough to go back to so here’s a more polished version
It’s an improvement, but I’d rather have a sequel...or an enhanced re-imagining, not the same game I’ve already played on PS2 and PS3. Or at least add in some new features, like 2 player...
why would you compare it to the PS2 version when there's already an HD PS3 versIon?
As someone who never played it, the latter version looks tons better, I think that’s just nostalgia ... “fogging” your perspective. Ba dum ccshh
