The PlayStation 4's on a little bit of a roll in Japan right now, as the current-gen console has outsold the Nintendo Switch for the second week in a row. Combining the numbers of both the standard model and the PS4 Pro, Sony's system breaks 50,000 units, which is a solid amount.
Over on the software charts, things aren't quite as eventful, but new PS4 and Vita release Gintama Rumble managed to enter the top ten on both platforms. On PS4, it shifted around 40,000 copies, and on Vita, it managed around 23,000. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition also charted, but with only 8000 sales, it's barely worth mentioning.

Monster Hunter is coming soon, the series is huge in Japan and will help PS4 a lot.
MONSTER HUNTER BABY!!!!!!! Xbox sales are up 1000% too!
We got dat Monster Hunter coming up son.
@NintendoFan4Lyf @JoeBlogs possible but then again it could have just been on sale, perhaps there was a special edition or perhaps some kind of special offer
there can be many reason as to why it had such a large increase in sales
@NinjaWaddleDee oh yeah monster Hunter will be huge for ps4 word up son
@NintendoFan4Lyf Could be just about anything — price drop, sales, maybe some sort of retailer package?
Switch will prob be irrelevant in Japan til either Bayonetta 1 + 2 or March when Kirby comes out... like more relevant than Xbox but not as relevant as Monster Hunter PS4... So these Japanese lists will be pretty PlayStation dominant.
Btw you might be wondering what do I mean? Monster Hunter has lots of power as it can keep a platform on top of Japanese sales charts for weeks - possibly months!
Personally I’m cool w this... makes the Japanese Charts interesting at least until Nintendo takes back the top spot w the pink puffball
@Derpie1 Portable monster hunter? Maybe. But home console mh? I doubt it. Hope you're right, though.
I guarantee it has everything to do with Monster Hunter World.
I don't understand why MHXX didn't release in the west, I still would have bought that alongside MHW, but I guess I'm stuck with only one Monster Hunter game.
I'm gonna miss smacking around the Hellblade Glavenus and playing as the Palicoes, playing as a Palico was the best part tbh:D
@naruball I think it’s the brand name that will sell it... plus it’s still Monster Hunter & not a spin off like that Monster Hunter Pokemon Clone
Oh no - the Switch has reached its Zenith and now going to drop like a Stone Its been beaten by PS4 in Japan - its the WiiU all over again - strong start but faded quickly LOL
Of course there are many factors that may determine interest in a console. PS4 as we know has Monster Hunter coming up - a very big title in Japan - as well as Dragonball Z, Dissidia FF NT, SotC, Dynasty Warriors 9, MGSurvive, Fist of the North Star (Hakuto Ga Gotoku), Attack on Titan 2, Ni no Kuni 2, God of War etc all coming up in the next few months. Some of these (like MH, MGS, AoT2) are on Xbox X too which may account for a massive jump in sales statistically.
The biggest Switch release is probably the two old Bayonetta games - maybe the Kirby game and DK Country adding to that. Most of the releases are not 'new' as such although it is getting AoT2 so maybe its not as enticing a proposition to buy right now compared to PS4 with a lot of games that you would think would be very popular in Japan.
Incidentally, the first Paragraph is a joke btw - I don't need Switch fanboys commenting on it....
Almost half of the software chart is Switch titles. I wonder if MS will be using MH to promote their system.
@Derpie1 Hm. Can you think of any non Ninty home console games with legs? Because I can't, but I may be forgetting something.
The only thing that comes to mind is GTA. Even Dragon Quest stopped selling after a few great weeks.
@BAMozzy I think they particularly care for MH World & DBFZ... cus the others are a bit off & such... Japan is very... reactive
Need an example: When DQXI came to PS4 & 3DS... yup both platforms boomed. That’s one game but people were willing to shell out the yen for both DQXI & a 3DS/PS4/PS4 Pro.
@naruball here’s the reason other games can stop another game’s momentum of sales...
Now in terms of non Nintendo games... Easy: Shin Megami Tensei is a rather popular franchise in Japan heck when SMT V comes out welp Nintendo better have stock or else Chaos will ensue
@Derpie1 I don't follow.
I think, MHW is ps4 exclusive in Japan? Have I dreamt this?
@naruball never mind
I think the only thing I can say is let’s wait & see a few weeks go by... how long will MH World & DBFZ stay on the Top 2 Of those charts.
Took 2 SKUs, MHWorld, and DBFZ
@Feena yes. You can import it for Xbox One & it does support Japanese on that platform but it is a PS4 exclusive in Japan only but outside of Japan it is multiplatform with PC coming in Autumn & no Nintendo version in sight
I really hope MH does well. I know it’s been pretty big on the Nintendo systems so I’m hoping it will sell well. Speaking of Gintama, I think that series is ending soon.
Xbox One X – 1,285 (6)
Whoa
Omg there's a gintama game? How did I not know this?? I bet it's jp only
@starman292 It is right now but Bandai Namco has brought more niche Japanese games West before... Could still be announced.
@starman292 I'm pretty sure it's going to make its way over here. They've released English trailers & the Asian version of the game has English subtitles. Just a matter of time I think.
Nice to see Rabbids @ No1. Awesome game!
To be fair, Nintendo are probably wise to not release anything around now, MH is going to smash everything in Japan soon.
@NintendoFan4Lyf McDonald's was giving free Xboxes with Happy Meals.
I don't care about the PS4 outselling Switch, it's just a matter of time before Nintendo catches up over there (and it will catch up, Switch is still a handheld machine at its core and Nintendo handhelds sell well, especially in Japan). I would love to see PS4 consistently in the 50K-60K range though and eventually get over the 10 mil mark in Japan. I know a lot of people love to scream how Japan is irrelevant but we just had easily the best year this gen in 2017 and it's no coincidence that 2017 also saw Japanese developers stepping up big time. Japan has always been a key part of the PlayStation brand and it needs to remain that way.
@eltomo Well Mario + Rabbids released...
@Derpie1 I think because it feels like its been out here for ages I kind of glanced over that.
@Derpie1 thanks!
I’m shocked, honestly. This is year five and PS4 is still selling this great? Then again, I shouldn’t be shocked, as Monster Hunter World is under their thumb right now.
Neither machine is outselling the Switch another healthy dose of using statistics to prove whatever you feel like proving.
If we’re goign all Sony’s consoles against Nintendo’s then just outsold Sony by over 10,000 units yeat again.
“But m m m m PS4 and PS4 pro are the same machine and play he same games!?”
What’s actually No.1 in that list?
“But But.... But Sony!”
What’s No.1 in that list?
Truth of the matter is Monster Hunter is due.
In Japan Monster Hunter is HUGE!
You’ll get a momentary surge in hardware sales because of that particular game and then it’ll die down to the standard level till the next HUGE game for that territory.... which is a slew of Switch games.
Is the Switch still hard to find in Japan? If so, that would explain why so little of them are being sold still.
Wow look at the slow burn of the Vita. Very consistent. The Vita’s relative success in Japan as compared to the West is a testament to the Land of the Rising Sun’s love for handhelds. Which makes it even more impressive that the PS4’s are going toe to toe with Switch’s sales.
@SilentS easy not much interesting games are being released at this moment + Monster Hunter World hype kinda has people like they need to get a PS4 NOW...
I’ll tell ya when Switch will sell again... 1 of 2 games: Bayonetta 1 & 2, Or Kirby Star Allies...
@starman292 https://sea.play-asia.com/gintama-rumble-english-subs/13/70bcbl
@Gamer83 Thats why we get so many odd Japanese games with English subs and i love it.
@KingSandyRavage Calm down dont get mad.
Why does Xenoblade Chronicles 2 sell so little or is it not so big in Japan?
@Flaming_Kaiser hahaha.
@Flaming_Kaiser
It looks fun! Is it made by koei techno?
@Flaming_Kaiser
I was a bit surprised by that too. I think Xenoblade 2 sales in North America have actually already outpaced Japanese sales. Surprising because you'd think if anything its homeland would be the market where sales explode. There are some Switch games that easily overshadow it though.
@starman292 I think NamcoBandai here are more Japanese games with subs. https://www.play-asia.com/games/asia_english_games/14/712bl
