THQ Nordic has just uploaded a new teaser for the unique BioMutant. Still scheduled for release this year, we've not heard too much about the title as yet, but this new video gives us a little sneak peek.
It's not long at 90 seconds, but we get a decent look at some different player characters, the combat, and the diverse environments. There's certainly a lot of personality on show; there aren't many games where you can pilot a giant mechanical hand, for example.
Give the trailer above a watch and let us know what you think. Are you interested in BioMutant? Meditate in the comments below.

Really interesting looking game, this one.
I like what was shown in the video. Looks like a lot of fun.
This is definitely on my radar. Hope it doesn't disappoint.
Oh right. This game's a thing.
@Nightcrawler71 I love your Seinfeld avatar I'm watching the face painter episode right now
Are those Porgs?
I hope it's good. I like the artstyle.
Not entirely convinced by this. It has 'humour' but not entirely sure its going to appeal to me. I doin't like the 'boing' or 'Pow' (60's Batman style) but I can overlook it if the game is 'good'.
It has an 'indie' vibe to me - not that that alone is reason to dismiss this but there is something that just doesn't connect right now so it will be a case of wait and see how it reviews, what others think etc before I make a final decision...
What did I just watch?
I thought about getting Kingdom Come, but I think this will be my ''I have no idea what I'm getting myself into'' purchase of this year.
@BAMozzy Looks better than any indie I've ever seen, from a graphical perspective at least. I think you mean B-tier game. It's definitely not a $100+ million budget game, it's just a smaller budget game.
COLOR ME INTERESTED. If I hadn't clicked on this article, I woulda never been interested in this game from the seemingly mis-leading name of the game and the promo materials I've seen so far that do little to convey what this game is about.
This game looks great, I will probably buy it on the release date.
@Octane Then you haven't seen many indies. Games like What remains of Edith Finch, Everybody's gone to the Rapture for example show that indies don't have to be just pixel or cel shaded visuals. These both blow the graphics of this game away but that wasn't quite what I meant.
I said it had an Indie vibe, like Elex did too but this more so. That wasn't to say that it looks like the equivalent to a pixel art/cel shaded game that so many indies seem to go for but that the 'vibe' feels like its an indie game. It doesn't strike me as a big budget game with the weight of expectation that comes with that.
Incidentally as far as the visuals go, it looks OK but it certainly wouldn't win any awards. The visuals are not the worst either - and I am referring to AAA games here. However, and to reiterate, I was referring more to the overall 'vibe' I get from the game rather than the graphics - hence I said 'vibe'.
Even for a 'mid' budget game - games like R&C, Uncharted:LL, Hellblade etc blow this away visually too.....
Good stuff, the more they show the more interested I am.
@BAMozzy I get what you're saying. Though, What Remains of Edith Finch was quite a small game, and very linear. I think this game has the scope of a big 'AAA' game, but not the visuals. Even games like Lost Legacy were mostly re-used assets of Uncharted 4, so an unfair comparison IMO. I'd put this on the same scale as R&C and Hellblade, but this seems to be a big open world, so naturally I'd expect the game to look not as good in the visual department.
Looking at the trailer for a third time, it feels a bit like Monster Hunter World. Not in terms of gameplay, but visuals. It big, but doesn't look like an Uncharted or Horizon Zero Dawn. The visuals aren't bad, the the textures don't seem to be the highest quality, and the animations are a bit wonky as well.
What I'm trying to say is that I have yet to see an 'indie' game that looks this good and is on the same scope. I don't think there are many. It's just one of the good old B-tier games. And those aren't as common as they used to be. Of course, none of this really matter... It's just a game after all!
have been interested in this since the first trailer looks great.
THQ is on a roll lately. I'm very interested in a few of their games.
This looks really fun. Lots of variety in the game play.
@Octane I was very careful not to say the visuals were at an 'indie' standard. I chose the word 'Vibe; on purpose. It doesn't feel to me like this game is a AAA game but like an 'indie' developer making a AAA Clone - like say The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and Diablo 3. Van Helsing is an Indie game in the same vein (no pun intended) as Diablo 3 so its not unreasonable to think that an indie dev could create a big open world RPG - not that we know how big the world is and it doesn't seem too open either with some quite 'linear' sections - especially if you watched the opening game-play where you follow a linear path that opens up into a 'small' clearing before going into the building section with more small rooms. Of course there are parts of this trailer that are more open but it doesn't seem as open world as some RPG's.
Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that this really doesn't give me the feeling that this is a big AAA or even the mid budget title. I watch the trailers etc and it gives off an 'indie' vibe to me. I don't know how else to explain it. Its not the graphics as they aren't bad and better than some AAA games. Its not the animations or textures which aren't the best (neither were Elex, Technomancer, ME:A etc either) but there is something about the game that gives off an Indie vibe - the whole package inc humour, setting etc
@dark_knightmare2 Yeah I love Seinfeld. Seen them all so many times!
@Nightcrawler71 same here def one of the greatest sitcoms ever
After watching that trailer Iām so confused. ... Not Death Stranding level confused, but confused nonetheless.
Is this the game that had a gameplay video awhile back that had a narrator talking the entire time? I remember a lot of people not liking that part of it. Wonder if they changed that at all. Still looks interesting and I look forward to hearing more about it.
@BAMozzy Well, fair point! To me it looks a game that has a pretty big team behind it. It's definitely unique. I'm not sure if it's something I'll like, but I'm willing to give it a fair shot once it comes out. At least it's something different than another sequel or remaster!
also a 20 min video with a dev on youtube search pcgamer, vid was awesome I cannot wait for this
I'm totally hyped for this game, it looks so interesting and just... different style wise. Hope the game actually lives up to my hype.
This game looks kinda awsome. š
@BAMozzy I guess you are in detox from all the standard stuff you just cant believe you are seeing something original. š
@Octane The thing is, that's how this game 'feels' to ME. I couldn't care less if people feel like this is the best game ever, most original or unique title in years, big, mid or little budget title - to me I see this and it has an 'indie' vibe to it. That's not a criticism either - unless they were aiming to create a game that was meant to convey what is expected from a AAA game. Maybe its that they are trying something different within a recognised format - after all most RPG's tend to go for a more serious vibe with more 'realism' - at least within the realms of its setting. Aliens in a sci-fi aren't 'realistic' but within the setting they are portrayed in a realistic manner. Every time I watch a video of the game, I forget this is a AAA game. That doesn't mean it can't be fun or perfectly playable but I struggle to place it alongside games like Red Dead 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Assassin's Creed, Horizon:ZD, Witcher 3, etc - other open world action RPG's.
'Original' is a difficult one as very few (if any) are original. We have seen many games with very similar game-play, similar 'basic' concept (like shooting enemies, levelling up, crafting new weapons which can be 'original' to that game but its not like we haven't seen some 'fun' weapons - the Disco gun in R&C for example). Changing 'humans' for anthropomorphic design - whether more cartoon or realistic isn't original either. Its been done in hundreds of games. Having a 'tank' in a game isn't original either - whether that's a traditional tank design, a sci-fi take or some 'comedic' design that looks like a hand with a finger. There is an element of R&C about it...
Originality now comes from the story - although again, if you break it down to the basic concept - destroy enemies to rescue a loved one, save your home world, fight back against oppression/invaders etc has all been done before too. Karma systems etc have also been done before so its not as if this is truly original in a lot of ways.
Again not a criticism as its virtually impossible to come up with something truly unique now. Its a game though that I forget is a AAA game and the video's also don't help either.
@BAMozzy Fair points, and I wasn't trying to argue with how you should feel about the game.
If we're talking about ''AAA'' games as in big budget games, I don't think this game is a big budget game to be honest. Like I said, it feels more like a ''B-tier'' game. I don't think this has a $50-100 million budget behind it. That's why I find it difficult to compare it with Horizon or TW3. It's definitely a smaller budget game, I personally don't think it's on the scale of an indie game either (from what I've seen at least). Somewhere in between.
@Octane Again, its not about the actual budget - its about the vibe it gives off. Hellblade gives off a AAA budget vibe even if its a mid-budget game where as this, to me at least, gives of that 'indie' vibe - whether its a Indie with a mid or even AAA budget it still has a distinctly 'indie' vibe to me. Maybe its the 'humour', the setting or just the fact that its not overly 'mainstream' in the way its gone about making an open world action RPG game. Maybe its the fact that the game doesn't seem 'typical' of the AAA games that would be green-lit for production by most publishers - what-ever it is about this game, to me it has a distinctly 'indie' vibe about it.
As I have stated, you can have 'indie' games with AAA quality visuals - not just pixel or cel shading art styles. Strange Brigade (Rebellion) has a 'B-tier' vibe about it - maybe because of the 'B-movie' type setting - as well as a game like Agents of Mayhem and even the upcoming Vampyre to me feels more B-tier as you put it rather than 'AAA'
There is no other way to put it. Its NOT about the actual budget or the visuals but the 'vibe' of the game. Its not even about the scale as a game like the Order was very short on scale with the average length you may expect an Indie game to offer but still had a AAA vibe in its video's. I know other AAA games have short campaigns but back that up with an extensive MP, co-op and potential replayability in that campaign too. Anyway the point is that the game's 'vibe' is indie regardless of the budget, the scale, the artstyle etc - at least to me.
Looks great, tbh ā much better than expected from earlier reveals.
