Sony’s finally put God of War in front of press, and to say the response has been positive would be an understatement. Twitter is currently abuzz with industry folk waxing lyrical about Kratos’ latest, and judging by this 15 minute gameplay video, it’s easy to see why – it looks extraordinary. Many of you will have seen this B-roll when it leaked over the weekend, but it’s worth another look – with commentary from the PlayStation Blog team no less.
We’re absolutely loving the way that the axe operates. Throwing it into enemies looks like it’s going to become one of the most satisfying mechanics of the generation, as you’re free to use your fists before beaming it back in and setting up a screen-rattling finisher. The word is that the title’s two hour demo is not only brutal, but it’s also surprisingly emotional. And yes, the entire campaign is framed using a single camera shot. Wow!

I love the bit about pulling back the axe and grabbbing it mid air. Reminds me of the Thor movies (which, you know, Norse mythology and all).
Frickin awesome, that’s great to hear.
It just looks SO fun.
This looks amazing. I was worried about this game based on previous trailers, but seeing it in action I'm not worried anymore. This will be great!
Stunning.
Cannot wait. I'm torn between getting this and Nino no kuni ii...
Kojima also didn't do any cuts in mgs 5 and I found it rather gimmicky and a downgrade cinematically. Especially the cut scene that does a spectacular close-up of a diamond dogs coffee cup for approx 30 sec... WTF!
Might work better in GoW4 though since it doesn't have a mission based structure.
Each attack looks incredibly physical now. The previous games always felt like you weren't hitting them because the camera was either too far away or the didn't give enough visual feedback.
@Miles_Edgeworth Why not both?
I have never played a God of War game but based on gameplay I have seen I think I prefer the combat in this game compared to the older entries, at least based on purely footage. I like slower but harder hitting combat.
I personally never played any of GoW but I am seriously thinking of buying this I have the trilogy from PS+ so I may consider playing them just to see the story unfold
@zazzy I mean, I'm 99.9% certain they'll layer in other stuff as you progress.
My hype for this game has gone through the roof after seeing this new combat preview, I think it's my most anticipated game now, spiderman is my number 2
And the finishing move on the revenant is just brutal lol
need this game man day one buy!
@Miles_Edgeworth get both.2 great games.and 2 of the best looking games ever word up son
@wiiware of course its your number one game right now.god of war is the best.word up son
@b1ackjack_ps oh yes.kratos vs gerad of riveira.god of war is playstation best franchises ever word up son
The God of War games have completely passed me by for some reason, but after watching this video I am now hyped for this!
@get2sammyb It certainly does look excellent. Do you think this GoW will be the only one on the PS4 (remasters notwithstanding) or do you think we'll see another one before the PS4 is retired?
@Turismo4GT Doubt there'll be another one.
But but no more weapons? D:
How will they add variety to the gameplay I wonder...
@get2sammyb Fair enough. I kinda think the CG graphics from the new ad is maybe what we should be expecting when the PS5 rolls around.
Nice. We've come a long way since those Tomb Raider 1 controls!
Wow, it really does look stunning!
The only thing that bugs me though is those button prompts that suggest they’ve gone Dark Souls with the controls. Having to melee attack with the shoulder buttons really rubs me the wrong way for some reason. I could stand it in Skyrim when playing in first person mode as I constantly had to keep my thumbs on the sticks, but “3rd person perspective + melee attacks with the shoulder buttons” is a terrible combination for me, I just can’t get used to it 😅
@clvr in the video they said you can change the button layout ^^
The wait is killing me !!! Lol jk . I got the Leviathan Axe toy from BestBuy it's so awesome . April 20th can't come soon enough.
@Sanquine woah thank you for the info, really! Unfortunately I’m low on gigabytes so I couldn’t watch the whole thing, thanks for pointing it out! 😄
That single camera looks to work really well and that combat looks meaty.
@clvr that kind of control scheme worked well in Horizon
As a child, I saw a movie called South Park: bigger, longer, and uncut. I was disappointed to see many cuts to the camera shots and gave it 0/10. Perhaps god of war will finally give me an uncut experience.
That gameplay looks terrific. Looking forward to this game!
Just finished GoW on my Vita to prepare for this. Gameplay looks fantastic.
@clvr Just remap the controls to a button layout you prefer, if the game doesn't have that option then remap them in the accessibility menu on your PS4. Job done!
I'm going to miss the combo stringing of, I guess we can now call it classic God of War, but this new direction looks like a lot of fun too. My pre-order is in, looking forward to it. Long time coming but we're now just one month away from Kratos' return.
This looks like a lot of fun, I don't have any love for the franchise not because I don't like the games but because I never played them when they came out. I played the remastered one on PS4 and the big boss fights were fun but I got bored with the general combat. I pressed buttons, he spun things round and enemies died and none of it ever really felt connected to one another.
This though looks right up my street and I'm excited to see more
Fave series... this looks like a Resi 4 style change of direction/reinvention (no bad thang) for the series. Cant wait.
@Shigurui woah, I didn’t know it was possible! You see, I haven’t had access to my PS4 for some months and I’ve only used it regularly for 4/5 or so months last year due to university, work and life in general, so I’ve never really paid too much attention to that kind of stuff.
Thank you for the info!
@clvr No worries mate, I'm a fussy sod when it comes to controls so it's a function I use all the time, just note that it maps the buttons globally so those changes will affect the console UI etc until you reset them back to the default settings.
