Too often we forget that there are real people behind the games we play, and whether the title turns out to be brilliant or a bust, passion and hard work goes into every single project. This video uploaded by God of War director Cory Barlog, as he looks at the release’s reviews for the first time, shows just how much energy is invested into these projects.
In short, he breaks down into uncontrollable tears when he sees the Metacritic rating. According to Barlog he debated whether to upload the video in the first place, but he explains in the YouTube description: “So, I thought a lot about whether or not to upload but then I thought of what my son, Helo, is going through right now. He doesn't want us to be around when he is sad, opting to run in another room and yell at us if we try to come in. It has been important to us to let him know that it is okay to be sad, it is okay to cry. There is nothing to hide.”
The video quality is potato cam tier, but it’s unusual to see such raw passion from a creator in the games industry like this. Whether you like God of War or not, it’s a reminder that very passionate people pour their heart and soul into making the games that we play. And it’s perhaps worth keeping in mind the next time you begin to rant on your favourite forum.

I seriously love this man!
Guys that will play at midnight (3 min to go) ENJOY I can only play tomorrow since I have a physical copy!
One of my most anticipated games ever is here! Can't tell you how happy I am!
Edit: also, you're right! Sure some games are garbage and the games themselves deserve to be treated badly...but not the developers!!! There are so many things that can go wrong
...and we're all human, we make mistakes!
You will never see love and pride in someone's collaborative creation like this with those crap-hole companies like EA. People like THIS guy and his team need to have the freedoms and budgets to make their games come to fruition rather than the churned out garbage that Ubisoft and EA cram together. It's a shame that the real people who love games in THOSE companies don't work for an organization like the one Cory and company are allowed to be part of.
@Party_Cannon That's not fair. There are tons of passionate and creative people at EA; it's not really their fault the suits try to undo their efforts.
Good for him and his team, i'm glad all of their hard work has paid off. The world of gaming needs more of this type of dedication and less false promises and backpedaling like we've seen from the likes of.....well I'm not going to name them, but we all know who they are.
It's hard not to cry along while watching the video. Congrats to him and his entire team
Cory seems like such a cool guy. I have tons of respect for him.
Man that was such an awesome video I’m so happy for him and the team at Santa Monica. It’s now at 95 so he’s probably even happier:)
It's amazing and beautiful how Cory is passionate about games, it's demonstrations like this that still makes me proud and happy to be a gamer, because there is so much negativity and toxic behavior among the gaming community.
I can't wait anymore for my copy to arrive tomorrow and finally play this masterpiece, God of War is one of my favorite series ever. Thanks Cory, you're a legend.
This is outstanding! The fact that he poured his everything into making this game his way and that Sony stuck by his side and patiently waited for it to come together seems like it’s becoming less common lately. Hopefully more developers will be encourage to turn their dream games into reality and also hopefully big publishers will look at this and see that taking risks and having faith can deliver great results.
Perhaps my point didn't come across properly Sammy. I was pointing at the corporate money-churning machines (driven by suits and bean counters who see us as cash-cattle) as the problem. I tried to say that the people at those companies who love games - or love what they do - do not have the opportunity to work for a company like Cory works for, so they can release a great product they can feel proud of.. and that their leaders in the company can be proud of them for producing.
HMM I wonder what that last sentence was POKING AT
@Party_Cannon Gotcha!
Fantastic video, nice to see that kind of emotion. Heck i teared up a bit. Is it midnight yet?
Does anyone know if this game has a day/night cycle?
My stone mason edition is waiting for me!
This weekend is gonna be f ing awesome!!!
@bbauer36 No it doesn’t, it’s not that “kind” of open world.
I'm not crying you're crying SHUDDUP
Good for him, can't wait for his next game
Update: One of the video that youtube recommended to me is "god of war all boss" and "god of war end boss", welp, no more browsing youtube app from smartphone until I finish gow now, only from pc with unspoiler extension .
Fortunately I'm not using my glasses so I didn't see the yt thumbnails clearly.
I'm happy for him. He's been there with the series from its infancy and you can tell he really wanted to deliver something special for us with this new game. It's awesome that it's turned out as well as it has especially when there was the added pressure of Santa Monica being a troubled studio when this started. He had a lot to work through but hit a home run with this one.
I knew after the Mario & Rabbids crying it was gonna be the new thing. Just wait until E3 😭😭😭
95 (94) now!
Cory Barlog is very likeable. I’m happy for him & SSM.
Sony better nail this guy down!
Well deserved.best franchises ever.best looking game ever.not only is this game.game of the year 2018.but its easily top 10 games ever.word up son .word
@playstation1995 wordd up son! GoW is the best! I can't wait to play it!
What a baby
I'm currently reading Blood Sweat and Pixels (which is great btw), and seeing the ridiculous conditions and pressures that these guys have to sometimes work in, the tears don't surprise me in the slightest. If anyone is a fan of gaming, I'd recommend you read it just to see how much of a feat it is just to get a game made... and to also give you perspective.
On topic though job well done, fella. We salute you.
"And it’s perhaps worth keeping in mind the next time you begin to rant on your favourite forum"
Well said, Sammy. Whenever I read a post about how a game is "garbage", I find myself feeling bad for the team behind it. "Not my cup of tea", "not for me", "didn't like x and x" sound better alternatives to me.
@partycannon I'm sorry but you can't say it's the Devs faults when it's the suits who are there for one thing to please the shareholders, the Devs are the grunts who wants to make passionate art and it's the suits that say "but if we take that out will it increase revenue" and the Devs have to do it because they get paid by the suits. Unlike Bungie who couldn't give 2 tosses about gamers and it's about making money period
I skipped sleep in order to keep playing, work sux if you're tired as hell xD
@YeYa word up playa
He is the one who wanted the game since the beginning, Sony was not even sure about it, I can't even imagine how hemust feel now. It must be beyond exciting!
@wiiware same for me wtf!!!! I only saw the title of the video but I have a vague idea of what the boss will be (if I saw correctly)! F**king youtube!
Stayed up until about 4 in the morning playing now heading to work off of 3 hours of sleep. Totally worth it though, very special game so far can't wait to get back home!
don't like god of war, but i really like this guy
I hate seeing people crying because I am emotionally stunted but he deserves the reviews and acclaim. I'd cry if I was him.
@AFCC Just search "Unspoiler", install the chrome extension, and input "god of war", and never open open youtube on smartphone until we finished the game. Sometimes I hate youtube
@wiiware damn, I'm not even going on my pc or phone until I finish the game after I start playing x)
Well, glad I didn't see the full thumbnail!
@AFCC Same for me. I watched the 'Dog of War' trailer, an official trailer from Sony, and it final boss fight was the first recommended video...
Why..? I hate that about YouTube.
@Octane yap, it's ridiculous! Maybe we can flag a thumbnail for spoilers? That would be a good way to avoid it
I will be getting my copy tonight and watching this tomorrow!
Just wanted to add that this video of Barlog crying made me buy the game day one. Just to be clear : I was already convinced that this game would be ACE, and I was about to buy it anyway, but maybe later. My backlog is so huge, and I have so little time to play, trying to be reasonable, etc...
And then I saw this. Proof that this game is not a souless product manufactured by robots from a giga corporation who just want you to buy the newest version of their star IP. This video show that this game was made by people who CARED, who really tried to not f... up, who devoted themselves to give us the best experience possible. God of War is not Call of Duty, nor it's Fifa.
So I bought it, on launch day. And I'm about to play it on a straight line, focusing on it, like I rarely do. Until I've finished it, I'm off the internet, in order to not be spoiled in any way.
Some people say this video is pure communication. Sure it is. The story about the son doesn't justify an upload online (he could have just showed it on its computer). But it is good communication, and in this case, an honnest one.
I've got the game right now, but I'll only be able to play it in a full week (cause I want to play it under the right conditions, first of it is time). But I don't even need to launch it to know that these guys can be proud of their work.
Thanks, M. barlog, for all the joy, and fear, and rage, all the emotions that I'm about to live throught your amazing, fantastic work. Thanks a lot.
Just avoid YouTube guys if now getting flooded with videos where they are now putting serious spoilers in the titles of the game. Like anywhere though i sometimes hate this generation because back in PS2 era you couldn't hardly get spoilers like you do now.
@Party_Cannon True, there's a big difference between a publisher like Sony, who respects the developers and their vision, and a publisher like EA or Ubisoft, where executives seemingly impose their will on the developers work. I can't imagine a developer at EA or Ubi go 'Yes, finally! let's have lootboxes and lots of microtransactions in our interactive work of art, and let's make our single-player game focus on multiplayer somehow'.
You know EA are going to jump on this article and try to put humans in front of their business. I won't give them the time of day, but Corey and his team deserve the accolades.
