Shadow of the Tomb Raider is finished. Wait, what?! That’s freakin’ early, isn’t it? The game’s due out on 14th September, so Square Enix has almost two months to press Blu-ray discs and print cover art. We can’t help but wonder, given the density of the release schedule, whether the launch date may be moved forwards – but there’s no indication of that as of yet.
Anyway, the game’s done. Finito. Always believe in your soul. You can catch some gameplay footage of the franchise’s largest ever hub area through here, which we’re now assuming was shot using near-complete code given the game is, y’know, complete. This feels weirdly early, everyone – are we just reading too much into things?

They need to start with the DLC at some point right? Might as well do it now :/ Sigh
Thought TR was one of the more likely candidates to be delayed, but I guess it's all good to go. Quite surprised by how early it is.
Release it in the end of august or be crushed by other games? 🤔
Nice one. Bet we still don't get a solid 30fps in the open world areas with "4K" option on. Not the end of the world like but if you got 2 months, would you mind working on that SE?
Wait, has a big AAA game ever have it's release date moved forward because of going gold so soon?
That just seems so weird. Guess I'm so used to delays that the possibility of a game being released early is bizarre.
Eidos Montreal are a great developer. Thank you for not following the lame gaming trends of today. Can't wait for SotTR!
@AFCC I feel like summer (August included) is a really bad time to release something, which is why we aren't getting any big titles until September. Summer vacations and people enjoying the outdoors and whatnot...games are gonna take a hit on those important launch sales and surrounding hype (see: LawBreakers last year).
September's not so crowded anyway...what is there? SNK Heroines is all I can think of.
Well done Eidos Montreal, now if you can get back to Deus Ex please.
@smelly_jr Uh .... lol. Surely you jest 😂... yeah, nothing in Sept or Oct — Spider-Man, Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest, Life is Strange 2, Spyro remake, Valkyria Chronicles, Soul Calibur, Assassins Creed, COD, Battlefield, NBA and FIFA, Lego DC game, Fist of the North Star, .... along with SNK. Oh yeah, and that little game called Red Dead Redemption.
Yeah, I’d like SotTR to move up a couple weeks. Put some distance between that onslaught.
I hope this game doesn't require you to have played Rise since I never have and have no interest now.
@get2sammyb And by the way, thanks a lot for enticing me to click that link 😒. Bizarro song. That’s 3 minutes of my life I’ll never get back.
@Th3solution Everyone likes Spandau Ballet.
@likeyeahwhatever Well when I was interested in it and had the time to play it it was only available on Xbox One. They waited too long to bring it out on PS4 and I have other games now to play.
@Th3solution Oops, I forgot Spider Man releases in September. Otherwise, yeah...I know October is stacked! Personally I wouldn’t mind the game getting pushed forward, but I know summer is traditionally a no-go zone for AAA publishers!
@Tasuki Yea stay away from Rise of Tomb Raider it was an incredibly boring game not worth the money. Horribly written, pretentious and filled with assumed empathy. Worst of all Lara Croft's personality has been reduced to nil. She's dull, over serious and over dramatic. All she was in game was being a psychopath mass murderer, going around crying and whinging over literal nothing which we are 'suppose' to be able to relate to. The first reboot was ok though, just not Rise.
@get2sammyb The only Spandau Ballet song I like is True.lol
It would make a nice change to have a game release brought forward rather than put back. It's current release date of just 1 week after Spider-Man may harm sales so it would make sense.
I remember back in 1997 when Tomb Raider news was super exciting news. Loved those games. I haven't even looked at this one.. or the last one. :/
@WanderingBullet
Well, that mention ruined my "that much is true" response!
2 months to finalize the day 1 patch - it's gonna be a biggie!
@LieutenantFatman in fairness, me too. Tomb Raider games are fun enough these days but back in the mid to late 90s it was a hugeee deal. I remember buying so many magazines just for a few new TR3 screenshots lol.
If Resident Evil got good again, you can do it too, Lara...
@kyleforrester87
Should be easy enough for them to do. Understand what it was that made the games popular in the first place and stop trying to copy current trends.
Sounds like it's going to have a big day one patch if they've got roughly 2 months to continue working on bugs and stuff.
@RPE83
@smelly_jr are you for real? That's gotta be sarcasm 😂
@smelly_jr I think game developers forget that people don't spend 2 months away from home most of the time! People have tons of free time in the summer and if the game is indeed good people will buy it I guess...
But yeah I sad that cause in September Spiderman releases and I think people will want that over another Tomb Raider game, imo
I was going to get this game but to cut a long story short I changed my mind
Found the reboot a bit of a let-down and haven't even played the last one yet, so not overly interested in this. Their "fake" dig at ND didn't exactly elevate them in my eyes, either.
Seeing as Rise was complete trash I think I'll be skipping this.
To be honest, I don't think there's any such thing as "going gold" anymore. Almost every game needs fixing after launch, and some of them change massively. Just look at No Man's Sky and Final Fantasy XV, for example.
Maybe they set the date realising they would need a good 4-6 weeks to iron out the kinks for launch day?
I'd love to see it moved forward a couple of weeks, strange they haven't kept working on it for a week or two more must be pretty confident it's bug free (though I didn't really experience any on the last 2 TR games)
@Paranoimia what dig at ND?
@RedMan33 Yeah, apparently the director for Shadow of the Tomb Raider tweeted out (now reportedly deleted) after The Last of Us Part II E3 demo that it looked to have “fake animations” or something like that. I didn’t see the tweet or hear much about it until the recent gameplay video has now been shared for SofTR and he’s getting a lot of grief for those comments. Honestly, TLOU2’s character animations are in a league of their own and so well done I figure the teeet was being sarcastic rather than salty, but I don’t know. And perhaps that’s why he deleted the tweet because sometimes the internet has a hard time taking a joke. And if it wasn’t a joke, then he needs to have his eyes checked. Regardless, personally I will try to give the benefit of the doubt and I am properly hyped for Shadow and despite it possibly not being on the level of TLoU2 as far as general animation and story telling level of polish, the gameplay I think has the potential to be every bit as fun, if not more so.
@Th3solution to be fair Naughty Dog are miles in front of most developers (Uncharted 4 still looks better visually than the new Tomb Raider and it's a couple years) I have absolutely no reason to think anything they've shown about The Last Of Us Part II is fake, I think it's more the fact that they showed similar game play at E3 and ND did a much better job than they did
@Th3solution Yes, as @RedMan33 has said, the studio head of Eidos Montreal made a very childish and bitter tweet about TLOU2 during E3. Seems he did actually mean it, as he apologised and deleted the tweet soon after.
I don't know if the guys at PushSquare covered it (I did a very quick search but couldn't see anything), but you can read about it here:
https://www.gamepur.com/news/29238-last-us-part-ii-gameplay-fake-tomb-raider-dev.html
He may have apologised and removed the tweet, but it was an extremely silly and unprofessional thing to do in the first place. Probably felt everyone was going to be crowing about the animation in Shadow and didn't like being upstaged so dramatically.
@RedMan33 @Paranoimia
I agree and as a fan of both TR and Uncharted (and UC’s little sister TLoU) I think they each scratch a different itch. I also feel like the ND animations are best in class, which really helps with the immersion with a story driven game. But as I stated on another thread in response to @RogerRoger ‘s recent observations during replay of UC4, although the accuracy of facial animations in ND’s products is so incredibly impressive (ex. “the kiss”), unfortunately their attempt at realism in their character movement results in a sluggishness or a “sponginess” (as he described it) of movement which actually decreases some of the fun of traversal. ND seemed to improve upon that with Chloe’s movement in Lost Legacy, and Ellie appears to move with the dexterity and accuracy of a ninja in the recent demo, but time will tell.
Either way, whether defensible or not (and I’m not defending them), the remarks about “fake” animations didn’t do TR any favors amongst ND fans and are yet another in the long list of ever growing world of people who tweet before thinking about the ramifications of their comments.
I dunno why some of you are viewing this as a bad thing. I'm happy the game is finished and won't have anymore delays.
@smelly_jr September has Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Spider-Man PS4, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and Dragon Quest XI.
@adf86
Yes because I want another game that has 15 special editions and crowd sources preorders to unlock content
@steventonysmith yes that was a dumb move but it didn't take away from the game's quality. Plus there was going to be another one since Mankind Divided had an abrupt ending so I'm hoping that they can go back to it.
@adf86
The controversy surrounding the global pre-order items unlock system was so strong that it did ultimately sour the game in many gamers minds. It ultimately sold worse than its predecessor, Human Revolution. Usually developers, and especially publishers don't like to keep a series going if it sold worse than the previous one, ask Red Faction about that.
@adf86
Just to further drive my point home:
(Sales numbers are Worldwide)
Mankind Divided (PS4 sales) - 710k
Mankind Divided (Xbox One sales) - 380k
Mankind Divided (PC sales) - 70k
Total - 1.16 Million Sold
Human Revolution (Xbox 360 sales) - 1.38 million
Human Revolution (PS3 sales) - 1.38 million
Human Revolution (PC sales) - 580k
Total - 3.34 million sold
So do you honestly think that anytime soon they have any plans to make yet another entry in this series when the most recent entry sold basically a third of the total sales of its predecessor?
@RedMan33
I personally wasn't very impressed by Uncharted 4, but loved the hell out of the new Tomb Raider series so far. The tech is really good but the game design goes to Tomb Raider for keeping my interest better
@steventonysmith I would like to think so, not every game needs to be multi million seller to justify its existence
@adf86
For a business they don't want to keep making sequels if the market has spoken that they are a third less interested than the last release. It makes no sense to keep dumping money into something for it to give you diminished returns.
@steventonysmith Well they said "they aren't finished with Deus Ex yet" so I've got every reason to believe they will do another one. Besides it should be less expensive to produce since they already have the ground work done through the Dawn engine and the story seemed like it was planned out already.
@steventonysmith to me it just seems like an Uncharted game, it plays a little better but in terms of story telling and character development Uncharted is miles in front of Tomb Raider (and I really enjoy TR)
@adf86
When corporate suits say they are not done with a franchise that doesn't mean they are going to make another big budget AAA title, it can mean they are going to make a Deus Ex Slot Machine, or a Microtractions heavy free to play Mobile game.
@RedMan33
I felt that Nathan Drake has always been more pompous than Indiana Jones and he was already pretty pompous
@3MonthBeef at the moment its every two to 3 years? how is that as bad as a rehashed CODY every year?
@steventonysmith HOnestly, Nathan feels a bit sluggish, wheras Lara seriously got game and can interact without every ounce of her environment. UC has good graphics, but TR is by far more immersive for me
