Car combat was the Battle Royale of the PSone days in many ways, as publishers all searched for their own answer to Twisted Metal. Only really WipEout remains from that era on PlayStation systems, but GRIP is looking to bring back the battle-infused racing of yore. The game’s latched on to a 6th November release date, and it’s looking pretty likeable in its latest trailer above.
“GRIP will see racers hurtling their way around 22 breath-taking tracks across a variety of hostile and foreign worlds, driving one of 15 armoured cars – some swift and agile, while others are brutish and heavily armored,” the press release reads. “Players must be merciless; deploying a bristling arsenal of 9 outlandish weapons and power-ups.”
The title’s clearly been inspired by Rollcage, which is interesting given that we chatted to some veterans of that series during our Firesprite visit earlier in the year. In fact, Robert Baker – one of the original Rollcage programmers – is part of the GRIP team. What do you reckon? Are you liking the look of this throwback? I need this game, loved Rollcage 1 & 2, so good.
Love the music reminds me of hospital records and good looking records both great music publishers. Game looks fun if the price is right I’ll bite
Grip looks so good.
I'd like to get this. Release is a bit close to Team Sonic Racing though 🤔
@Kyroki @LieutenantFatman Did either of you ever play Firebugs? Essentially the spiritual 3rd Rollcage game? I didn't play it until a couple of years back. It's good, but a pretty shifted aesthetic which I didn't care for.
@KALofKRYPTON
I didn't play it, but I remember one of the big playstation magazines back in the day reviewing it. They had it on the front cover. It was pretty crazy, they had a big argument about what score it should get and then printed the argument in their review. Seems they didn't think it measured up to the previous games anyway.
@LieutenantFatman Ha!
Well, there's some stunning pre-alpha gameplay for Grip on YouTube, looks like a great Rollcage remake.
Given this and how well WipEout Omega has been doing, I'm hoping eXtremeG will make a comeback too. The first two weren't much cop, but eXtremeG 3 was great, XGRA was superb!
That looks really good, Rollcage was amazing.
