The beta for PlayStation 4 firmware update v6.0 has rolled out for some lucky fans, but it’s a bit of an unusual one. In an email message accompanying the beta invites, Sony’s told recipients not to expect any major consumer-facing features in the stress test. “You will find smaller quality of life and performance fixes,” it said. “However, we would still love the help from the community to help us test the overall performance and stability.”
What does this mean, then? Well it could be that PS4 firmware update v6.0 is merely a major performance update, which is being used to seriously shore up the stability of the system. Alternatively, the manufacturer is secretly testing a major new feature and waiting to roll it out – something like PlayStation Network name changes, for example, would presumably need a lot of analysis on the backend.
As much as we do think the system software could do with tightening up – our PS4 has started to run rather slowly of late – we’d be surprised if the Japanese giant released a major milestone firmware update without any meaningful new features. With the manufacturer keeping those close to its chest, though, it’s really hard to speculate on what the update could bring. Did you get invited to the beta? Have you noticed any improvements?

@get2sammyb there have been rumors in some circles that Sony is getting rid of the PS4's Playroom feature. I dunno how feasible that would be, especially at this stage in the console's life cycle, but I would certainly welcome an uptick in the system's OS performance. If that could translate to more freed-up resources for the games, that would be great.
Any speed increase to the OS would be welcome. It was so fast when I got my PS4 but it is rather sluggish now and things take ages to load. The store is in particular need of a performance boost.
@Turismo4GT What do you mean by "Playroom feature"? That's just an app, isn't it? Why would it improve performance?
@KratosMD Yeah mine runs slower these days, too. PS4 Pro from 2016 and similar issues.
for me the 'Share' button takes ages to load-up after i press it on PS-Pro
if they can fix that i'd be happy
The xmb and the PS store have become considerably more sluggish on my original PS4. Download speeds tend to vary for me from game to game. Sometimes a patch will take longer to download than a sizeable demo.
@Kidfried It's just little things for me. I'm not sure whether it's an issue with the network (i.e. it's trying to pull data through the Internet and struggling to do it quickly enough) or just a system issue. My hard drive is practically full though so it could be that.
I have half my original 1TB hard drive full and have been noticing the OS is not as fast as it used to be, although it never were as speedy as I would hope. I have the PS4 hooked via ethernet with a very stable fast internet. I guess we'll never see a console from Sony without loading time on the UI.
My launch PS4 was chugging along like a tractor for a while. Until did a database rebuild a few weeks ago. The difference is night and day in terms of front end performance.
Can't say it's at launch levels of speed, can't remember - but it's certain swift enough in use.
I'm not sure what else they can ad to the PS4? FW seem to get pretty small.
My pro runs fine but as of late my Slim has been running horribly. Frequent game crashers, apps taking forever to load, just shoddy overall. Just started happening couple months and so hopefully this can solve it.
@get2sammyb yes it's an app, but currently a non-optional one (seems to be built into the OS as you can't delete it) so it may be using more system resources to have it running than other, downloadable apps.
Just signed up to fix your sluggish PS4's ;D
I have 2 PS4s and only one has been extremely sluggish. The sluggish UI after visiting the store or going to home and keeping game running was just awful.
However. I noticed that this only happens on the one PS4 that has primary access. Hmmm.
After some messing around I figured out that its doing with Auto game save feature. Once I disabled that the machines not as laggy as before. Still room for improvement mind.
Hope it helps someone.

@Turismo4GT Seems unlikely to me.
The email says for me "At this Beta stage, the 6.00 update does not include any new major consumer-facing features" so i assume that we will get more features soon
I honestly think that cleaning the fan often helps a bit with performance! Also my original hdd has like 50gb of space left don't know if that helps...
This firmware is useless then? Ok thanks xD
I’d be up for a defrag app/tool of some sort.
@jgrangervikings1 I believe that's what database rebuild is, but I could be wrong.
I always assumed the lag and janky-ness came for the PlayStation Network not being responsive enough.
Between the store, what's new, friends crap, trophy stuff, auto saves, Plus verification checks...PSN needs to be more responsive.
@KratosMD maybe its full of dust and running hot? That can affect performance in a big way. Just putting a vacuumcleaner on it should help
oh is not going be name change dont give people hope .
@KratosMD i have a year two vanilla ps4 and it runs like a dream... the problem could be you have too many games installed on your device? i am not using the stock 500gb hd, but rather an upgraded 2tb drive with 75% storage free. it could also be that there is not enough free space left on your drive.
Over the last year the updates have made the console seriously sluggish, they need to really look into the system usage and trim off anything that doesn't need to be loaded. And maybe look at removing useless stuff like The Playroom etc which I don't and never will use
@KratosMD fair enough. i'm just not seeing the performance problems you and others are experiencing. i wonder if it is related to the stock hard drive or not... maybe it is many different factors... to be fair i game far less than some of the power users on this site so my drive likely isn't half as fragmented
I have the Beta, but not sure how it's affecting anything yet. Will keep you posted when I go back on!
More lag...
Because, if they don’t, most will be content with a huge catalogue of PS4 games well into PS5’s release.
They can’t have that! They want a big hit of purchases on day one. They NEED us all to be sick and tired of “sluggish” PS4s.
I do hope they rectify it a short while after PS5 because I love my PS4 and have to do the updates if I want to keep playing online.
All I want is OS speed improvement. My HDD is 25% full and it's slow as hell when trying to access the PS Store.
All i want from update 6.O is a fast lag free operating system and ui. Maybe a completely new OS is needed instead of tweaks.
@Turismo4GT I really hope they don't remove the Playroom. My 3 year old absolutely loves it.
Can someone please offer me some help.
I've just done a database rebuild on my PS4 Pro and now I'm being bugged by the "discover" notification. I can't for the life of me remember how I stopped it before, and can't find owt on the internet.
Can someone pleeeeeaaassssse help.
Mine has been a bit laggy and stuttering a bit on the main menu page :-/ Not sure why. Maybe it was playing COD:BO3 but I have stopped playing it now and a seems a bit better but not perfect. Hopefully they can make it work more smoothly. Apart from that can't think of much I want really in the next update.
@Turismo4GT PlayRoom "feature"? It's not a feature...It's a built in game. The most it would do would free up the hdd space a minor amount (like 2 gb-ish).
It wouldn't improve performance to the OS, cause it has nothing to do with that.
@Turismo4GT That makes no sense.
@CD456 Try this out it may work if you're still having the issue.
Go to the "Discover" notifications and click on each one and back out. After clicking and backing out of each one, put the PS4 in rest mode. Turn it back on and restart.
@MrFixIt54 Thanks for the reply. I actually tried this but nothing changed. The notifications eventually started to calm down, less and less, each time I turn the PS4 on. Now, there's virtually zero.
