Sony basically confirmed the PlayStation 5 last week, and now it’s recruiting a Senior Product Manager to help plot out the roadmap for its next generation console. The role – spotted by ResetEra on career focused website LinkedIn – is looking for someone who can effectively liaise between product management and product marketing to bring the new system to stores.
While it doesn’t outright reference the PS5, the job listing isn’t exactly subtle about what the job will entail: “You will own the roadmap for [the] next generation PlayStation campaign,” it claims. Interestingly, the platform holder’s also recruiting a Senior Software Engineer, which will involve maintaining “momentum of PS4's tremendous success worldwide going over to [the] next generation”.
Things are really gearing up now, and it’s making it harder to predict whether the console will deploy next year or in 2020 like we’d originally assumed. Watch this space because it feels like things are about to snowball, and we’re super intrigued to see what goes down over the next six months or so. Could we learn about the next PlayStation as early as the beginning of 2019?

Exciting times
They will do well to come up with a better slogan then #4theplayers such a clever marketing line that got across the console's philosophy, incorporated the number 4 and been a Twitter hash tag. So many people remember it, even ones who wanted to use as a stick to beat Sony with when they did something you didn't agree with. By comparison who remembers Xbox's launch tag line?
Suuuuurely 2020 right? We still have no idea when Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part 2 and Death Stranding are launching
@adf86 Good point. I cant recall XBox One having one at all lol which means It wasnt veru good. Since the PS4 slogan was "Greatness Awaits" in North America maybe they should go full Spiderman and take #BeGreater.
But it's looking more and more like PS5 could launch Holiday 2019
@adf86 could you fill me in on what the xbox slogan is?
idon't think i ever heard it in a xbox commercial.
edit:just looked it up.
"all in one,input one" realy?
@teatimed It could still be 2019. The Last of Us Part 1 launched on PS3 5 month before PS4 released so Part 2 could still be released next year. Ghost of Tsushima might be early 2020 and honestly I think there is no Timetable for Kojima, he'll release Death Stranding whenever
@NintendoFan4Lyf
my guess awell.
reveal at next e3(specs,price,features ect) then a game showcase at psx 2019,release date early 2020.
I still rekon it's comming in 2020 but get announced late 2019
Please God let it be 2020 cause I just bought the PS4 Pro
@NintendoFan4Lyf it's almost a given that it will.
Don't worry Sony, I'm here to help, and I'm bringing 90s boyband 5ive with me.
@adf86 #5ivewillmakeyougetdown
Oh god I reeaaally hope Ghost of Tsushima does actually release on ps4
I love my PS4 and all the experiences it has available, but the recent trickle of next generation news, from both Xbox and PlayStation (but mostly PlayStation) has got me rather excited for the next few years.
I still think Nov 2019 is the latest realistic release window for a PS5. Its 6yrs after PS4 and the Pro would sit directly half-way between the two releases. 6yrs is also a LONG time in a console's life cycle - at least as the top generation - as we know, Sony do support their consoles well into the life cycle of the next gen hardware.
As 'good' as the PS4 is, its still showing its age. and a year is a long time in gaming and technology in general. You can point at the sales figures of PS4, but that never stops companies like Apple or Samsung resting on their sales and not looking at bringing newer, better hardware to market. You can argue about their great line-up of exclusives coming up - but even they show some 'cracks' (limited shadow draw distances - especially in terms of quality - Ghost of Tsushima for example showed Shadows jump in quality quite close to the character, increasing use of dynamic resolution etc) and obviously the Pro, whilst decent, isn't really offering the experience befitting 4k TV's the majority of the time. I do agree that the chequerboard rendering method is superb and the PS4 Pro's built in object tracking leads to by far the best implementation of that. Its still just a half way step though and compared to the full 4k experience on a PC with high/max settings, its a LONG way short - not that I expect a console to compete but shows how far behind it is - not just visually but combined with lower frame rates too, the gap is increasing.
There are other aspects missing too, Dolby Atmos, Game VRR, 4k HDR Bluray, Dolby Vision etc. All things now offered by Xbox as well as the much higher visual settings/resolution. Some of that comes down to the extra GPU horse power, but also the extra RAM. Its no secret that both Sony and MS are using old/dated CPU technology - can't multi-thread for example and relatively slow too.
I wouldn't be disappointed if it doesn't release in 2019 but I ould be surprised if Sony doesn't make a console for the next generation for another 2yrs. They made the best for the HD era and now need one for the 4k era. I know some may not be 4k ready but HD displays are disappearing from retailers and more and more people are buying 4k TV's. It makes sense for Sony to be at the forefront of console gaming for the 4k generation.
I just hope they will make a skyrim remaster for ps5
@3Above @Jdv95 Xbox's slogan was Drum roll "Get In"
Hook it up with a PSVR 2.0 & I'd be a day one buyer.
I'm on team 2019, $200 ps4 and $400 ps5 is the perfect price. And maybe $300 ps4 portable when the tech is ready
@3Above Ghost is definitely 2019. Probably April/May, like Uncharted, HZD and GOW. At TGS Kojima said Death Stranding is still on track for a 2019 release, whatever that means.
still really can't see it happening next year. it would be selling itself short on specs, would likely have to launch without backwards compatibility, and sony's got no first party teams who could launch new titles along with a new console (at least not ones that are exclusive PS5). i'm also expecting it to be fairly pricey in the UK, and i think game prices might rise by £5-10, which is why i think cross-platform games will not be such a huge draw. for me personally, i think games design has to really improve first before we move to new hardware.. that has not really improved from the PS3 era, it's just prettier versions of the same old tired franchises/sequels and formulae.
How about VIP of product Marketing Kevin Butler lol for the adverts as least I'm sorry but it would be good to bring a little fun to the next gen console and Kevin did that. Some say it's done under the table but I think Sony needs to brush whatever happened under the carpet with the actor and bring him back maybe even Jack Tretton as well
I'm here Sony - my marketing is top notch. Reveal trailer. Lights go out, a single spotlight reveals Shawn Leyden. He's wearing a Shenmue 4 tshirt. He starts to rap, slowly at first then faster about how PS4 is the place to play. At the end of it, he pulls out a pistol and fires randomly into the backdrop that, wait for it, spells out PS5 with bullet holes.
Boom.
I see an announcement at e3 or psx 2019 with a late 2020 release. Im not ready for a jump yet and i think Sony should ride the wave of acclaim from this gen for a little longer. It won't be so easy next time around. That would mean releases of days gone next spring, dreams in the early summer, Ghost of Tsushima or Deaths stranding in the september and november slot and the last of us in spring 2020.
But Sony need to nail the launch line up. No deep downs or other vapourware. Games that will be there day and then a clear roadmap for the months ahead to ensure a steady stream of new content. And wrestle back the indies that are seeing switch as the new home for indie titles.
Im torn on PSVR 2. I see it as absolutely a must, but i wonder if sony should hang on for that one to launch later (with PSVR 1 compatible with PS4 backwards compatibile titles on ps5). Would be great to see remote play with vita and other devices, but assume that wont happen
Final fantasy 7 remake as a launch title??
@NintendoFan4Lyf I am sure the next gen consoles will work on HD TV's too so you will get super-sampling and Atmos (assuming you have a receiver capable of delivering Atmos).
I would expect Sony to stop making the Base PS4 in the next year and the Pro to be the only PS4 available. As with every other Playstation generation, the existing one will continue to be made and supported for years after the new generation arrives.
As for Microsoft, their devs are already making games with the X as the lead console and then just scaling these down to what ever degree they need to to run on the base XB1. They are not making them on base XB1 and scaling up. You have to remember though that the X still has the same CPU architecture and its not significantly boosted - not compared to the 4.2x boost in GPU performance and the massive boost in RAM and RAM speed. A 4k image takes 4x as long to render as a 1080p image or to put it another way, if you only have a quarter of the GPU power, it takes as long for that to render at 1080p as it does for the more powerful GPU to render a 4k image. That's a basic look although there are other factors that come into play that affect GPU render anyway. The point is though, that if MS devs are targetting native 4k, then that should scale down well to 900-1080p on a base console.
Games though also have frame rates. What this means is that the time taken to calculate and render a frame, as well as all the physics, AI etc has to be done within 33ms (for 30fps) or 16.7ms (for 60fps). Its this that determines whether a game runs smoothly or not. In busy scenes, the time taken to do all the calculations and draw the frame exceeds either 33 or 16.7ms and so you get dropped frames. The reason we see some games like FH4 offer 60fps modes on X is because they reduce the time taken to render the frame by reducing the resolution significantly - it now takes around a quarter of the time - thus meaning that they can then hit the 16.7ms frame target for 60fps.
I wouldn't be surprised if MS do move the goalposts in essence. In other words, make a new console that becomes the 'enhanced' Xbox and the X becomes the base whilst phasing out the base. In some ways, they can't make a 'revolutionary' jump in visuals - they already offer 1800p+ with the option of High res textures, Atmos audio, Game VRR etc and the jump up from 1800p-4k with high visual settings to more consistent 4k with high visual settings isn't going to be that significant. The biggest jump for them will be in frame rates and next gen visual features like ray tracing. With Sony, looking at the Pro where most games are around the 1440p, the jump up to native 4k with high res textures and higher visual settings, as well as Atmos and a 4k HDR Bluray player is a much more significant visual jump - let alone performance.
You can argue that console gamers shouldn't have any advantage - especially in frame rates - but with cross-play with PC (particularly in MS exclusives), even PS4 vs Pro (look at Battlefield which can have a big difference in frame rates - let alone visual clarity over distance), the likelihood of this becoming more relaxed or accepted is high. The BC on Xbox also allows for more disparity in frame rates - depending on whether you are playing on your 360, base XB1 or X so I can see MS bringing out a new Xbox that isn't necessarily locked to XB1 gen in that it could get its own software if the XB1X's CPU isn't up to the task, but also be an enhanced XB1 too in that it will play all the XB1 games at 'enhanced' levels - all those dynamically scaling titles with unlocked frame rates running much better, new games having higher visual quality and higher frame rate caps.
Of course it does depend on whether gamers are ready and will accept that - otherwise MS could market it as a 'new' generation and classify the XB1 releases as BC to get around that. It seems its more accepted for their to be a disparity in frame rate with BC than with new releases - unless you market the game as a 60fps game and have one run at 60fps whilst the other barely scrapes over 40fps when it would feel better capped at 30fps. Again though Game VRR would be of great benefit here too as that would improve the way 40fps feels and plays.
Talking of VRR, Iwouldn't be surprised if some games exceed 60fps too - even up to 120fps. Fifa 17 ran at a native 4k/60 on a Pro so a much more powerful system could run the game at higher frame rates.
@BAMozzy you seem to know a lot about this suff
do you think that sony devs or even multiplatform devs will ever make games with pro as the lead system,or will they keep it as it is now and just go all out with the ps5?
@leucocyte Part of the reason that games haven't evolved too much and may feel like prettier versions of PS3 era is down to this generations consoles. In 2013, certainly in the year or two preceding the launch of the current gen hardware, the world was in an economic crises and analysts were predicting that consoles were dead. Both Sony and MS had to build new consoles due to the extended life of the previous gen, the games coming out and the gap between them and PC. They both opted to go big on GPU to make games look 'next gen' but weren't prepared to go big on CPU and thus price their consoles too high considering the economic state of the world and the risk that they wouldn't sell.
That is why we really haven't seen much in innovation and why games are more like prettier versions of last gen. Of course there are areas that couldn't work on old gen systems - due to RAM limitations - so you couldn't have big open areas with no loading sections (whether obvious loading screens or less obvious narrow, empty sections that hid loading of the next area). Batman: Arkham Knight for example wouldn't have worked as well - buildings would have required loading to enter and it was the streaming that games like the Witcher 3 employed so that the world felt big and open rather than having big open areas joined by narrow pathways.
There have been indications that devs have tried to push games in some directions - AC Unity tried to have a massive number of NPC's with complex AI and a lot of variety - too much for console CPU's to cope with so bottlenecked. Just Cause 3 tried to be too complex with its physics and destruction and so that caused issues with consoles too.
PlayStation 5
5 for players.
You can have that one Sony.
For some reason I feel like this generation was the shortest and weakest and I think the next one it's gonna get worse thanks to prices of 4K we might get even less games and even more ports, remasters and remakes
I'm hoping for a Xmas launch next year 😁😁😁
@teatimed now it's basically a PC type architecture surely backwards compatibility will be a big thing for PS5 and these ganes would likely work on it anyway with Xbox one X type bonuses.
@jdv95 the difference with the Pro is that its very close to the PS4 in its design. It is literally a PS4 with an extra GPU bolted in that only engages with Pro enhanced titles. I know the Pro had a few extra features built in - like FP16 support and Object tracking to enhance the Chequerboard rendering technique. As such, it really doesn't matter which system is the 'lead'. Both have the same RAM essentially - albeit a bit faster, both have the same CPU - albeit a bit faster. It makes more sense to build for the base though and see what the extra GPU can do to boost resolution.
As for Multi-platform devs, I wouldn't be surprised if they build their games with one eye on the limitations of base hardware but also build their games with an eye to the future. By that I mean that most games require a very hefty PC rig to run at the highest quality visuals the devs built. Everything is then scaled down to run on consoles. This is evident in the fact that games utilise dynamic scaling on consoles. I am sure if they built the game with say XB1 as the lead console, they would build the game to run at a constant 1080p for example, have overhead on a PS4 and PC's would easily run games at crazy frame rates and ultra visual settings. I am sure that they may have 1 eye on the current consoles - assuming they are targetting those for releases. In other words, they wouldn't make something that they know the current hardware has no chance - maybe even going so far as to tweak their game when it comes to porting because it won't work. These devs are experienced enough to know the limitations of the hardware but I doubt they are building their games to be optimal on a 'lead' console and then scaling up/down for other platforms. If that were the case, then these games would be optimal on that console - no need for dynamic resolutions, unlocked frame rates, less than 'high' visual settings etc. They would be made to work within the limitations of the hardware and with consistency. I know that some devs maybe a bit more ambitious and therefore may have to compromise in some areas - reduce the visual settings here or there to ensure more consistent gaming experience but in general, they seem to be making games for 4k PC's that even the best can't run at ultra settings and a minimum 60fps then scaling down to whatever hardware they are releasing on.
i said it before but PS5 announcement next year with a 2020 release, it just feels the right time
@adf86 Lol wow really? I dont think I've ever heard or seen that anywhere 🤣 They didnt do a good job of marketing that slogan.
Well crap. I better start working up a reason for why this will be a necessary family purchase...
I think it would have been hilarious if Sony came out and just said that the PS4 was their last console and they're getting out of the games industry. Let's just say it isn't a massive surprise that the PS5 is a thing.
Would probably be an advantage to have the same initials as PlayStation. Something like Phil S... Wait
@AFCC. hahaha when did you buy your ps4 pro.i bought mine lat year before thanksgiving on ebay.brand new for 360$.im still playing my ps3 also .i got ps1 and ps2 on my ps3.too many games.but i think ps5 is coming in 2020 .and ps5 will be 12 teraflops.word up son
I reckon November 2019 as well....Just before Christmas where sales levels fly through the roof. I'm saving up
@Nakatomi_Uk. i agree butler ps3 commercials was the best.i do miss jack tretton .he was the best.jack should come back as jack nickolson on the movie the shining.heres jackkkkkk.😱😂👍.word up son .Halloween is coming.word
I don't want it coming out anytime soon. There's still many games I'd like to pick up for the PS4, but judging on how the Playstation Store is slowing down on games being added (not as many as there were last year), it seems like it's getting ready. Other than that, I'll wait for a while before getting the next one, basically to have the first few games drop in price and probably wait until a nice bundle of the system (or going down in price altogether) happens, and this time, just start getting games first, then have the system with a good library of titles to play...plus, there's no telling what Microsoft has up their sleeves, and after the PS3 and 360 era, there's no telling what system will get more games and be the most popular (granted I'll still get the PS5 first for their great IP's). Other than that, I always hate it when the popular console gets all of the sequels and games and the others get left in the dust...seriously, Wipeout 2 and 3 came out on PS3, so why didn't Wipeout Create and Crash...and what ever happened to some of the other family-oriented games like most of the Spongebob's, Scooby Doo's and others that came out on 360 and Wii. Even if some didn't sell well, it's nice to have them for kids that are just getting into gaming. My kids just started to get into gaming during that generation, and I hated having a Wii with a bunch of family games, instead of a better system that seemed to lack in them. Other than that, I'll be ready to see what Sony has up their sleeves to dominate the next generation, and laugh at how far behind Nintendo will then be, granted the Switch is selling, imagine the fact that the indie developers will want to up their games and prices on the next Sony and Microsoft consoles, leaving nintendo to really have to up their feet for their next console too. It'll be interesting for 2020 if that's when all of this goes down!
Time to bring back Kevin Butler. This was my favorite marketing time for Playstation. Could show him down on his luck (PS3 days) and then his resurgence (PS4 days) and his return to the top for PS5.
@GKO900 Really i have 70 plus games i think that is more then enough. Not counting the indies. 😁
https://youtu.be/ukgISn3P2nQ Kevin Butler. 😁
@DMG361132 70 plus not enough? Or some people b***h to much. 😁 👍
@leucocyte
'would be selling itself short on specs,'
May I ask why you think so?
I mean they worked it out with AMD long ago I guess so whether the hardware is ready one year earlier or one year later might be just a matter of timing and component availability?
@JJ2 - the current AMD APUs with zen CPUs and vega GPUs are only just coming on the market, and even if they doubled the CUDA cores etc. on the GPU, it wouldn't be significantly better than the XB1X in that regard, though does have a much better CPU than the jaguar. if sony wants to make standard 4K/60fps with very high levels of detail and some of the latest gfx features (and for example, OpenGL doesn't have any native API features for ray-tracing), they'll want more than a boosted xbx1, and making enhancements to the general design and its SDK will take time. personally, i don't think PS5 will come out til Q4 2020, given i think it will need at least 12 T/fps of GPU, and 16gb of much higher bandwidth memory, at cheaper consumer prices.
@leucocyte
I apologise for my ignorance but there's been strong rumours of AMD prepping Navi for Sony and supposedly shipping next year. Its different from the GPU you mention isn't it?
I'll do it!!
@adf86 I believe xboxs tag line was, "For the viewers."
@Flaming_Kaiser Well I didn't say it didn't have games I just think that if you compare it with previous generations it's the weakest so far, less exclusives, new third parties games or small projects (no indies) and all of this thanks to cost and time development and we are not even at full 4K
And I just got the console last year because I was still playing on my PS3, hell my last game on PS3 was Persona 5 because I didn't see the huge difference from PS3 to PS4
New slogan:
#5aDay
I’m supposed to be getting a Pro in a few weeks time but now I’m not sure if it’s just best to wait. If it’s announced that the PS5 has backward compatibility for PS4 games then I’d seriously consider getting it, though I’m expecting it to be about £500 when it launches. On the other hand if it does not offer BC then I’d probably get a Pro but only if it was reduced to £250, just knocking £50 off the current £350 when there is a next gen PS console isn’t good enough to me, hopefully we will know more sometime next year like specs, if it offers BC, price etc.
@BAMozzy PS5 November 2019 I can not wait, look at the past comparison.
https://www.cinemablend.com/games/Next-Gen-Call-Duty-Development-Infinity-Ward-42964.html
https://segmentnext.com/2018/10/09/call-of-duty-2019-cross-gen/
@JJ2 - Vega is AMD's 5th generation of graphics cores (GCN) - (by comparison both PS4 and XB1 used GCN2 and PS4 pro and XB1X use GCN4) and Navi is supposedly the 6th generation, but the last i saw on AMD's roadmap was that had been moved from 2018 to "2019 or later". it may be that sony is in collaboration with AMD for a custom designed APU using Navi architecture, but the indication seems to be that it's a while off.
@leucocyte
Tbh I don't really know the tech but I try to keep informed. This Summer there was this interview from AMD (I don't want to butcher her name but I think you'd know the person). She officially announced AMD is working with the both Ms and Sony but they seem to have different products. She said the consoles have each their own 'special sauce'. I saw Navi is definitely set for 2019 but possibly not PC.
I'm still hoping and praying for a 2021 or Late 2020 release, but it probably will be closer to spring or Summer 2020 at this rate, if not Fall 2019.
@Octane That's all possible. I would guess Sony would stagger these releases because why not. I suppose Death Stranding could get a Cyberpunk 2077-esque reveal at E3 2019 so we might actually know what the heck the game is.
@3Above There's already like 30-40 minutes of Death Stranding footage
@Octane But I still dont know what type of game it is 🤣 or did I miss Something?
@3Above Open world, stealth, third-person shooter, etc. In ways similar to MSGV I think, shouldn't be too hard to imagine
@Octane Ahhh ok, just became less interested in it then 😐
@playstation1995 I hope PS5 comes 2020 it would be perfect
I bought the special edition Pro from Spider-Man like 2 weeks ago or so
Wow.i got my ps4 pro last November.before Thanksgiving.im not ready for ps5 .I still got ps3.ps4.ps2 and ps1 games to finish.yeah 2020 or 2021 don't care I'm chilling like a villain with my ps4 .word up son
