Minecraft’s final update – which includes support for the Nightmare Before Christmas mash-up pack – has been released on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, effectively ending support for those versions of the game. Joining the ageing Sony systems are the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii U, which have also been binned by developer 4J Studios.
“The older generation of consoles now make up less than five per cent of our active players,” said series owner Microsoft earlier in the year, “so we've made the difficult decision to focus our efforts to support players where they play Minecraft the most.” This, of course, includes the PlayStation 4, although by dragging its heels on cross-play, even that version is now lagging behind its peers.

Makes sense especially with rumors of PS5 and NextBox floating around.
5% of an enormous number of players is still a Hugh amount of active gamers. I guess if they're still playing on an old system, they'll love playing Minecraft as it is and that's still going to be the same game they know and love.
I always find it sad knowing that the previous system is going to die off, I wouldn't be surprised if the online for PS3 will gone totally soon. But you can just across the store for your previous purchases but online gaming will be dead.
So PS5 comes it frees up the network for 4 and 5
makes sense really BUT one thing i have noticed that PS4 version is still receiving updates that add new things like new animals and such but the XB1 version isn't instead they are just concentrating on the realms version (yes the XB1 has 2 version)
and the thing is the realms version (that's the one that hjas cross play) is actually WORSE than the XB1 and PS4 version, it may have infinite size worlds but it's slow, the texture packs don't work half the time and it's a floaty as hell (the character moves far to fast and feels like it's "floating" over the ground instead of walking)
yeah the PS4 version might not have cross play (at least for now and probably never will while MS insist it uses XBOX Live for it's online no matter what system you are on) BUT it's become the best version to play on consoles
