There’s a laundry list of franchises that fans would like Sony to bring back, but SOCOM probably sits somewhere near to the top. As it’s a New Year, then, we may as well pick up where we left 2018: with rubbish rumours. Our good friend Tidux is back, telling his followers that a new instalment in the multiplayer military series is in production.
Of course, as we’ve come to expect from the rumour monger these days, there’s no source or evidence to corroborate the story. Some people think that this may be why Guerrilla Games recruited Rainbow Six: Siege director Simon Larouche, but that’s obviously just speculation – there’s really no reason to believe it could be SOCOM related at all.
The platform holder has said that it wants to do better with multiplayer titles, and there probably is room in the market for a tactical shooter like SOCOM. We reckon this type of title would do well at the start of a generation, perhaps as a relatively cheap download on the PlayStation 5 that could be expanded over time.
As for this rumour, though? Don’t read too much into it.

Ahhh....but it is the perfect time to bring socom back. Would sell a lot if it had regular pvp, co op, and battle royal.... would be a huge exclusive.
@Cutmastavictory Wouldn't it be too similar to PUBG, though? The Battle Royale especially.
@get2sammyb all right royal modes are similar, but it would just be a mode. Add in the other stuff I mentioned and you get an excellent game, that fans of the series will love.
If it ain't gonna be on PSVR, I really couldn't care any less @get2sammyb .
I'm not sure why your reporting it if you think Tidux is irrelevant though.
@JJ2 Because unfortunately people believe these rumours. They spread very quickly, very strongly, and people expect the games to be announced.
I don't like the idea of Sony releasing live service multiplayer games, but a SOCOM revival made by Guerrilla would be neat.
I think it will be great if sony make new socom games since we rarely get "slow" fps/shooter like rainbow six/old ghost recon.
Boy, it's only the second of January and we're already getting Socom rumors.
@get2sammyb
I always believe rumour are rumours.
I'd argue only his followers are supposed to know but if the press reports them then who's to blame?
I got the idea though. Thanks for reply.
Finally, someone with brains.
@get2sammyb @Cutmastavictory I never played Socom so much, just a little bit the first game on PS2, but isn’t the series more tactical than the likes of pubg and fortnite?
It should come back, there are many fans of the series but it looks like that Sony is not interested in Socom anymore.
What I would really love is a sequel of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time on PS4.
Also Jak and Daxter back.
@PS_Nation It's pretty tactical. Probably more so than PUBG, but in that sort of category.
@get2sammyb I think a Sci fi based Socom game would be pretty cool
i hope not, socom special forces was terrible. sony's got much better shooter franchises it could resurrect. even MAG (which was also made by zipper) would be a much better prospect.. it had 256 player battles long before it became popular to have big player counts.
I think it's more likely that the next Killzone will be more multiplayer focused then Guerrilla making a new Socom
@PS_Nation yes it is more tactical, which makes it different than the popular shooters.
@get2sammyb Im one of those... Socom 1 & 2 changed my life. I have friends today I hang out with because of that game, I became a Locomotive Engineer because of that game. I cant give up hope it will be released again. I didnt stop hoping for Shenmue. I checked News and Gaf everyday for like 15 years waiting on new Shenmue News and First Contact with Alien life news. I got Shenmue 3!! Socom has to come back... The rumors that I heard yesterday was that Bluepoint and a new Studio in CA. were working on a Re-Release of Socom 2. Do you as an insider have a clue as to what Bluepoint is working on? they have been driving me crazy for 2 years with their silence...
