I really do get it, y’know? No, not Death Stranding’s storyline – I’m as confuddled as the rest of you by its pseudo-philosophical mumbo-jumbo. I’m talking about the scepticism. You’re bored of Hideo Kojima being, well, Hideo Kojima, and you want the auteur to be put back on a leash. Maybe not a Konami-branded leash, but a leash all the same.
No, look, I do understand the concerns because deep-down I’m beginning to question whether the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive is going to be for me as well. It appears to be some kind of courier simulation, where you’re delivering packages like a backpacked Postman Pat who just so happens to have a small child strapped to his chest.
But I’m not 100 per cent sure that’s what the game is going to be, and here’s an idea I want to propose to you: isn’t it refreshing not knowing? Allow me to present to you another hotly anticipated 2019 title: Borderlands 3. Gearbox has shown a lot of this game since its announcement, and do you know what it looks like: Borderlands bloody 3.
Now, there are a lot of Borderlands fans out there, and I’m not throwing shade in Randy Pitchford’s direction at all – he gets enough of that from Jim Sterling and ResetEra. The point is that I knew exactly what to expect from Borderlands 3 the second it was announced, and hours of gameplay footage since has done little to change my mind. It’s Borderlands 3.
And that’s great if you wanted more Borderlands, but aren’t most AAA titles like that these days? I’m one of the few fans of Days Gone, but it’s a design-by-numbers open world game that just so happens to have a handful of ideas it can claim to be its own. The forthcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may be going in a darker direction, but I’ve still played it before.
Death Stranding, then, is a rare example of a tentpole title that I’m still second-guessing three months before its release. It may very well be rubbish, but don’t we criticise this industry enough for shoving the same ideas down our gullets every 12 months? Shouldn’t we be celebrating something that’s a little out of the ordinary – a game that appears to be bucking every trend in the book?
I understand that you want Sony and Kojima Productions to sell the game to you, but no one is forcing you to buy it at launch. You’ll find all of the information you need online the moment the title releases, and I promise you that the mystery will evaporate eventually; there’ll be game guides, livestreams, and YouTube videos – the title will be blown wide open within days.
But for now, shouldn’t we just embrace the unknown? It’s so, so rare for a release of this calibre to try something genuinely different, and to maintain a degree of secrecy right through until it debuts. Look, it might be awful – a pretentious and polished turd that will earn its 3/10. So be it: you can’t complain about a lack of creativity in this industry while simultaneously criticising something for daring to be different.
Are you frustrated by the air of secrecy surrounding Death Stranding, or are you also a fan of its haphazard marketing cycle? Scratch your head in the comments section below.

I don’t have problem with it since I usually wait for the reviews before buying games.
I don’t understand why people worry about this game though, kojima previous games is mgsv that received great metacritic score and sold great, I don’t think he has ever made a bad games. Oh well, maybe that’s part of being sony exclusives games.
Yea... i'm pretty befuddled by Death Stranding, but will still buy on Day 1
There was a generation of gamers that were told that Halo, Gears and Forza (sprinkle in some Fable) were all you should care about. Dude, bros still exist, unfortunately.
I’m looking forward to this. I don’t know if it will hit my Thomas Was Alone or Edith Finch story highs, but I hope so.
People need to stop putting Kojima on a pedestal and then getting all angry when people don't like something he does. A lot of Nintendo fans do the same sort of thing with Sakurai.
There is always a backlash to something popular. The more popular it is, the bigger the backlash. If you don't want to deal with the hate, don't put someone on the pedestal in the first place.
If you give Metal Gear Survive a 8/10 everything goes. 😆
Stories that come from Hideo Kojima have always been weird.
Preach!
Agree wholeheartedly!
AAA games are pretty safe right now. They've always been like that whenever a new trend happens now yeah, but as time goes on and franchises are made and lasting, it's easy to predict what to expect for the most part. Heck, I remember when most games were kept under wraps until it was close to release, only getting snippets of info and gameplay from trailers. This really isn't the first time Kojima himself has done this- Remember how he hid Raiden prior to MGS2's release?
As for Kojima himself, I don't mean to sound like some elitist, but I dunno if I can say that his games are really for everyone. I don't like saying that, but even MGS can be an acquired taste, since they aspired to be more than a typical action game. I don't expect Death Stranding to be any different.
Worth noting while I am a fan of Kojima and have a lot of respect for him, I know he isn't perfect. I was one of those who felt disappointed by MGSV, enough that I didn't want to finish it. And even before that, Peace Walker was a game that I had mixed feelings for.
I respect Kojima's creativity as I have been playing games he has created since 1988. He is out there and he keeps his cards close to his vest. He never reveals too much too soon which keeps peoples interest building. Today's footage was only a small aspect of the game and was a swerve to the adventure, new concepts, and escapism that I'm sure this experience will provide the many people who buy it to play and enjoy.
I dont think its Postman Pat. Hes called Sam anyway and I didn't see the cat
Play the game and find out. That's how it used to be and should be. No one knew what SoTC and Zelda were when they were announced or FF and RE.
What happened to actually being surprised? I did not know what Portal 2 or Okami were about and loved both games when I played them. Never knew what FF was but bought FF7 and at the time it was my favorite game.
No dis but anyone jumping to conclusion looks ignorant when they say they don't understand what's going on (why would you since you have not played the game?) and then make claims about it.
I look forward to playing and finding out. If I don't like the game then I will simply trade it in. I knew more about RDR2 and hated it, so having more understanding of a game does not mean you will like it.
Gamers should always remain open minded and play as many games as they can, which is the point.
@thebakerswife What do you know about Cyberpunk or Ghost of Tsushima? Death Stranding is not suppose to tell you all of its secrets, just like Ico.
How Do you know unless you actually play it? Is it really that difficult to play and find out? The first game you played I doubt you knew anything about. All I knew of Mario when I played it at age 6 was that he jumped down pipes and all I knew of Sonic was that he was a blue hedgehog.
People complain about games being too similar then complain because they don't know more about a new game.
@DerMeister No game is for everyone though. I don't lkke RDR2, GTA5, Fortnite, PUBG, AC, FC, Fifa, COD or Apex but Death Stranding is fay one for me.
Like I said in another comment section: I will gladly (and I stress, GLADLY) take a smorgasbord of mad Kojima nonsense with a mediocre gameplay over most "AAA" games these days. At least Kojima won't psychologically batter me with live service monetization.
@RBMango The funny thing is the gameplay looks like evolved MGS5 (only interesting thing about MGS5) but people are confused lol. Its a TPS game with stealth but the world and concept are different.
@GodGamer The minute-to-minute gameplay in TPP was very good. If DS takes that gameplay and marries it to a much more cohesive and better paced story than TPP's mess of a main story, then I'll be happy.
There is nothing to defend yet. Likewise there is nothing to complain about. The game has not been released yet. Day one there will be so many game play videos and talk about the game on Twitch and Youtube. No one will have to purchase it blind as to what it is! Feel free to watch them all day and still buy it on launch day that night if you wish.
Are we heading for another No Man's Sky situation?
"I’m one of the few fans of Days Gone"
😂 yes those are very few and far between 🤔
I have no problem with the secrecy and the fact that we're still not really sure what type of game this is. For me its when they come out with statements like Kojima doesn't make "games", well that's funny because I've played a lot of games made by him. Or saying things like this game will be a statement and will push the industry forward, whilst showing us a clip of the main character climbing a ladder and some basic combat against some guys in hazmat suits with Horizon Zero Dawn's framework clearly in place.
Now I'm still curious about the game and looking forward to seeing more and it may well be everything they say it will be, but it's not for the makers to judge its impact on gaming and certainly not before it even comes out. Just let the game do the talking and from what I've seen I'll be buying it long before I even consider the new COD, Need for Speed and that Star Wars game
Sold my PS4 a while ago to focus on RL, but this article was so well worded, it speaks from my soul. The reason (mainly) I even COULD get rid of my PS4 was exactly that: The predictability and "sameness" of all the triple A titles!
The problem I have with it, is the gameplay we saw just didn’t look very good at all. But that can all change, I can only base it on what I saw.
Great article @get2sammyb . I have my doubts about this game, I personally don’t know if Kojima is a mark of quality - he is operating on his own for the first time after all. However the entire marketing for this game is mystery and not knowing what to expect. The only way we will know if the hype was worth it is to play it. Which we can in a few months. Judge a game by the finished product.
Death Stranding - Sponsored by Amazon?
The game could be wonderful, but for now it's still so mysterious and unknown. So until we know more, I'm going to wait and see before considering getting this.
People complain about walking simulators but then praise Home, Edith Finch and things like that.
Anyway this won't be a 3/10, what Kojima game was a 3/10?
This is one of the most fascinating games coming out this generation, what is it? It surely has some kind of weapon combat, is it a stealth/horror/open world? Is it indeed a cargo delivery simulator? Who knows? I want to know when I play the game.
Imagine, things so simple like having new enemies to shoot will be actually surprising.
Amen Sammy!
@Neolit Unfortunately there are lots of people that don't like new or different experiences. Just looking at Reddit says a lot about what a lot of gamers want, they seem disgusted with the very existence of this game and the fact that it doesn't focus on big endless blockbuster action.
Red Dead Redemption 2 got a very similar response by the gaming community because it wasn't fast paced and forced players to immerse themselves in the world and treat it with a pinch of realism.
It's unfortunate but it does seem like a significant portion of gamers want the same style of action/adventure games that we get every couple of months, and any game that doesn't fit the mold gets met with scepticism.
The positive that I'm taking from the response to Death Stranding is that God of War had a similar negative atmosphere surrounding it before release and we all know how wrong people were about that.
@carlos82 I wish more gamers took that approach and just waited until they saw more of the game to make a fair judgement but seeing the amount of negativity on places like Reddit after the latest trailer is just disheartening.
I think some people don't understand that not every game will follow the same formula and that just because it doesn't appeal to them it doesn't mean the game isn't good. I think quite a few gamers live in a bubble when it comes to different tastes and opinions.
i'll be honest, i don't think it's going to be a game for me, and part of me thinks that kojima is being deliberately obtuse for the sake of being obtuse.. but i very much doubt the entire game is going to be walking from one side of the USA to the other simply delivering packages. a lot of industry guys that have seen more of it in private seem to think it's doing new things, and stuff we haven't seen a lot of before, so i'm kinda hoping the mundane gameplay shown so far has been chosen so as reveal as little as possible about it. i agree, it's somewhat refreshing to have a bit of mystery about a title in an era where previews and extended gameplay footage are all over the web long before the game is out.
i'll probably still not buy death stranding either way.. but the same is true for borderlands 3. it's just more borderlands to me, and i've already had more than my fill of that with the first two. i've only bought 3 games in two years.. and one of those was a remake, and one was a reboot. it's largely why i don't really feel any hype or anticipation for PS5.. 4K, ray-traced god-rays, and 3D-audio won't change the same old franchises that are churned out.
Not really sure what there is to defend, all I've seen is praise and excitement. Hopefully this cross of BotW and MGSV will be a perfect marriage (and fingers crossed for an Ultra Ultra HHDD PS5 re-master!)
I think the Deadman cut scene actually did quite a lot to de-mystify things. It essentially answers most of the fundamental questions about the game's background, explaining the baby mechanic and the life/death connection Kojima's talked about (if elliptically). I'm surprised I haven't read more comments, etc to this effect to be honest.
Yep no. Not interested.
It’s the most excitingly different game in years. I’ve been increasingly jaded with gaming after finishing RDR2 and realising that not a lot of what I own stands even close to it. Ps Plus ran out and I saw all those padlocks on the games and I thought, ‘Nah’. I haven’t played my PS4 since it ran out and hopefully once I buy Death Stranding, it’ll be the game to get me to love gaming again.
Don't know why, but Sony relationship with Death Stranding reminds me of the relationship Sony had with No Man Sky. While Sony has put money and resources into the game, they seem to be distant from the game.
2019 is year of complaining over everything and nothing, I'll be getting DS for sure i love weird and new IP's. I'm big on Anime and Manga yet i don't know anyone else who does they're usually ignorant and brush it off as kids cartoons same goes for games if it's not COD, GTA or Fifa then it's weird and they won't try it. They are losing out big time but what can i do!
I like bizarre, mysterious games that do things a little different and try not to show too much in its reveals but all the gameplay videos I've seen of Death Stranding just aren't selling it for me.
I remember not really feeling the very first reveal trailer of Horizon Zero Dawn but when they dropped the combat gameplay video, I was immediately sold. Nothing shown of Death Stranding has done that yet.
@get2sammyb Yup, I'd rather have games that try something new even if I end up not actually wanting to play half of them because they went in direction I wasn't a fan of...that's still better than not wanting to play them purely because I've played them 10 times already.
@thebakerswife thank you. Everyone thinks I’m not into it because they haven’t shown much, but I don’t care about that. I just generally find Kojima’s work isn’t for me. There’s certainly been stuff about this that interests me, but then there’s other aspects of it that I see and think, “there’s the Kojima I’ve grown to expect,” which completely turns me away from it.
I truly hope this game is amazing, it’s always great to see a brand new IP out there. Especially, one from someone as renown as Kojima (even if I don’t agree with all of his praise). I hope this game surprises me and stands on its own merits, and not just in the name behind it.
@DerMeister Every time I read about people being confused about Death Stranding, I automatically think about MGS2 before it released and I cant help but be more excited for what's to come.
Rather play it than another indie pixel-art game - that people keep claiming is what the industry is lacking yet needs to sell at $15 to find an audience of 50K globally.
Day 1 for me... This will be the game for the MOMA/Reina Sofia crowd.
@LN78 I'm in this boat entirely. Normally I'm a patient gamer but I'm just so intrigued to play something different I've preordered. If its rubbish and different, at least I will have tried something different.
It's Kojima's. It's not battle royale: I've pre-ordered.
Simple logic.
yeah saw the stuff from gamescon.

not impressed at all honestly, i think i'm gonna give it a miss
@GodGamer When I say "not for everyone", I mean that the general gamer probably won't appreciate it as much as a more dedicated one would. That's why I said "I don't mean to sound like some elitist", because it ends up making me sound like some wannabe artistic snob going all "you won't enjoy this as much as I would, you plebeian, ho ho ho". Kinda like how From Software games aren't for everyone because of the difficulty curve, yeah?
Not to say you don't have a point, because everyone does have different tastes. I just felt I should clarify what I meant.
I mean, Hideo Kojima is an absolute genius game-designer, so I think this game will definitely be high quality. But, of course, just like the Metal Gear games this might not be everyone’s cup of tea
I disagree!! Just being 'different' in itself does not mean that the game should be lauded, should get a free pass or bought just because of a single person's involvement - regardless of their track record.
Whether Borderland 3 is just Borderlands 3 and as predictable as any sequels game mechanics are doesn't make that a 'bad' game either. It had its 'breakthrough' with the first game and built up a following from consistently delivering what the fans expected - at least in terms of the general game-play loop.
People didn't need all the information about Borderlands 3 because they know what to expect. A new game, especially one that is a new IP with perhaps some new, never before seen mechanics, that has to sell itself far more. People that blindly buy because of a single person's involvement is absolutely ridiculous.
I am not against Death Stranding at all but I am getting annoyed of all the people who are blindly excited because of Kojima's involvement. Its literally the cult of Kojima because people are blindly following him, blindly expecting some masterpiece yet have absolutely no idea on whether the game itself has a story they want to hear, game-play mechanics that feel right, do something more than wandering around a deserted landscape with an insanely large back-pack and escorting a baby to link up 'strands'.
You can be critical of Borderlands for doing some 'bland' escorting side quest despite the game-play being solid and 'exciting', getting some new insanely fun loot with a lot of humorous encounters etc, enjoying everything solo or with friends and family making it so much more fun. We know that it will be because its part of a franchise that has built up its reputation, its experiences and moment to moment fun etc because its a sequel to games that established what to expect years ago.
There were people that doubted Guerilla Games at first - not a linear game, not a first person shooter even the female lead was questionable by some but we had a good idea of the game-play, what to expect to be doing for the majority, we had a bit of a backstory for that lead, that she was an outcast but all of that - inc the overall story of the mystery as to why the world is the way it is all fed into what we could expect from the game that we knew what it was (without spoilers) by the time it launched. We can say the same for pretty much all new IP's although some still didn't give the experience we were led to believe at launch (NMS for example) but in general, we have enough information to understand what we can expect from the game inc the basic game-play loop - which if the Game-play we have seen so far from DS, it would appear we are just ambling around realistic but deserted landscapes and some impressive visual cut scenes. It looks incredibly tedious to me to spend time wandering the world to get from cut-scene to cut-scene in a story that as yet doesn't make sense or appeal. The very fact that you yourself still has very little idea is proof that it shouldn't have the excitement and interest it does, that its effectively given a free pass just because of Kojima's involvement.
Its not that I think Kojima needs to be on a leash at all. Its that I think the information and details we have on the game is not deserving of the level of excitement the game has. I can totally understand why Last of Us 2 garners such excitement because its a sequel to a very popular game and to a degree, we know what to expect from the gun-play etc even if we know little about the actual story.
Not once have I said Death Stranding will be awful and all I have said is that its more important to sell the game, what is, what it offers etc than a sequel that has established itself from prior titles in that franchise. If Naughty Dog opted to make a new IP after LoU2, I wouldn't blindly be excited but I would be interested. The excitement (or not) would grow based on what information, what game-play we get to see to know what we will actually be doing between cut-scenes etc. If it just strolling from Cut-scene to Cut-scene, then I won't buy. If the story is that great, I will watch a youtube video of all the cut-scenes stitched together because I buy games to play and by play, I mean do more than moving from A to B.
Wasn't a fan of MGS but will buy this for sure.
@Scollurio
Dreams, Death Stranding, Concrete Genie, Shen Mue 3. Pretty creative AAA PS4 exclusives all coming within the next year. None are cookie-cutter in the slightest.
@Kidfried No, it's exactly what it means. It's this sense of "it's him he can do no wrong!" And I don't care if you think your partner is the hottest person in the world, people are perfectly allowed to say and think otherwise. This "How dare you not agree with me, this person is flawless!" attitude is unhealthy.
@iamtylerdurden1 True, but that doesn't make them automatically good and opposing those are a million cookie-cutter titles by the likes of ubisoft, ea and activision. There are certainly "creative" and "fresh" triple AAA games, but really they're not as common as they used to be.
@get2sammyb
"one of the few Days Gone fans"
Days Gone has 4 million players and it's expected to eventually hit 5 million units sold (lifetime). This is without artificially ehanced numbers via Game Pass and with generally bull**** reviews from critics who played on a pre-day one patch and never were able to factor the new modes.
Critics rated Days Gone in the low 70's, but gamers generally loved it. There was a huge disconnect between the two parties. Even user reviews on Metacritic are significantly higher than the critic score. The user average is a full point higher and has sat in the 80's since launch.
Days Gone was also the number one game for i believe 3 or 4 straight weeks. The platinum percentage is over 5% and it's not a cakewalk. Days Gone is a game that ppl just loved playing. There are millions of Days Gone fans out there, not a few.
Who tf actually wants Kojima to be "leashed" and controlled? Are gamers really so boring? The entire point of going to Sony was to see Kojima no limits. It's why we are excited.
The trailers actually helped to understand some of the confusing elements such as still-mothers having a connection to the other side thus using Bridge Babies as conduits.
And that's all i have to say about that...
@Kidfried Sorry but no, hate is fine, so long as it never crosses the line to threats or actual slander. If people want to say Kojima is a talentless shmuck with overblown and unjustified popularity and they hate everything he has ever worked on - then they can say that sort of thing. And the more popular something is, the more likely someone like that is gonna pop up.
The only line people mustn't cross is threatening people or outright slander. Like people spreading lies claiming her beats his wife or is a pervert or something. That's going to far because it's actually dangerous.
15 to 30 minutes of uninterpreted gameplay, all of this talk is redundant. Cyberpunk has plenty of footage ( more is coming) & that game is coming out in April..
