Insomniac Games has moved on to much bigger and better things since developing the Resistance trilogy for the PlayStation 3, but I’m still rather fond of the alternate history exclusives. Launching its infamously expensive next-gen console alongside a game set in Grimsby was a bold move, but the Ratchet & Clank developer made the dreary England backdrop work, thanks in part to Fall of Man’s fantastic gameplay loop.
While I don’t remember much about the narrative outside of an alien invasion, the studio’s penchant for exciting gameplay gauntlets has stuck with me until this very day. Fall of Man in particular was defined by its old-school weapon wheel, and it really stood out in an era when Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare spearheaded the shift to more realistic loadouts consisting of just two or three firearms at a time.
Admittedly, the divisive Resistance 2 did fall into this trap, but the first and third games both possessed their own very unique identity. I was always impressed by the way in which the developer managed to replicate Ratchet & Clank’s gadgetry in such a different setting; firearms in Resistance allowed you to shoot through walls and bend bullets around corners – it was immensely entertaining, and the weapon wheel ensured that you always had a multitude of options in any encounter.
This approach to combat can be felt in the developer’s most recent releases; Marvel’s Spider-Man, for example, provides plenty of creativity once you unlock all of the superhero’s gizmos. But I think the Resistance series had some of the studio’s very best combat concepts: the Mutator in Resistance 3, for example, could be used to turn foes against each other in a bizarre biological twist. And the V7 Splicer from Resistance 2 could be used to cut through alien flesh with ease.
While the original game was defined by its dismal visual style, I think Resistance 3 had a very interesting look to it; Insomniac Games tried to capture the feel of grindhouse movies, with chromatic aberration and copious film grain. The problem is that the PS3 wasn’t really powerful enough to run it properly, resulting in a sub-standard resolution that looked like Vaseline had been smeared all over the screen.
Obviously porting to the much more powerful PS4 would allow the games to realise their full potential, and while they’re going to look dated by modern standards, there’s nothing quite like them on the console right now. It’s not unfathomable to imagine all three games running at 60 frames-per-second in checkerboard 4K on the PS4 Pro, and like other PlayStation exclusive remasters such as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, set-piece moments such as the Chimeran ship invasion should still shine.
Whether or not the platform holder would be interested in porting the multiplayer modes as well is up for debate, but I have extremely fond memories of Resistance 2’s co-op mode, which served as its own standalone campaign and was wonderfully designed. The second game also obviously offered competitive deathmatches for up to 60-players – a precursor to the Battle Royale craze, and a record playercount prior to the launch of Zipper Interactive’s underappreciated MAG.
Look, there’s no question that Insomniac Games has moved on since creating the Resistance series, but the trilogy still has some incredible highs – especially during combat encounters. The developer’s future may remain with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank, but let’s not forget its origins either. Activision lovingly recreated the studio’s Spyro the Dragon titles, and so surely Resistance deserves a place on Sony’s current console, too.
Would you play some kind of Resistance remaster on the PS4? What was your favourite game in the franchise? Did you somehow skip these sci-fi third-person shooters first time around? See through walls in the comments section below.

Sure, if only to replay the Grimsby level in the original.
Call up Bluepoint games and make it happen. Their remasters are typically amazing.
sure for next gen
Absolutely yes!
@WillMerfi Better than collecting all those NFL games?
I’ve been thinking for awhile how nice it’d be to have a Resistance remaster collection. Even throw in the psp version too if possible, that’d be a fun collection to replay in 4K w/ 60 FPS
Resistance 3 was pretty decent from what I remember. Never played the previous two though. I wouldn't say no to a remaster collection
Agree, I want 4k & 60 fps remaster/remake on ps4
And R&Cs would love to play A Crack in Time again on PS4. More then Sony's other studios this is one where it justifies such a collection.
I played R2 for so, so long. Managed to platinum it
resistance 3 is still one of sony's best exclusive games, imo. different tone from the first two, which had a greater impact on the narrative imo, and all the weaponry had such a great feel in combat.
sure we will get this & Infamous collections on both systems but won't hear about it until the PS5 hits next year loved both series a lot.
best fps games ever made.and top 5 franchises ever.word up son
@playstation1995 Seems like another one made the top 5 list! Noice.
I've never played the Resistance games, so I'll happily take remasters for them.
Remaster SOCOM first
@naruball definitely.word ☝ up son
@naruball @playstation1995 yeah! What’s that? 20 in the top 5 I think? Nice!
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy Loved the first One the second not so much Platinumed the 3rd.😁
@d_philly33 Upscaled PS Vita version would be nice.
They were obviously passionate (Sony and Insomniac) about the series. Make it happen. Get in the war chest and fund this!! Blue Point please!
I can put it with all the old rehash on Switch I care nothing about 🙄
Announce a new Trilogy!! Started at PS5 launch. Make it a RayTracing showcase (toss in the 1st one for free in the Season Pass like UBi did with ACIII)
Will let everyone know our PS5 investment has something amazing in the pipes from day 1.
You do not buy a AAA studio to make remasters.
@kyleforrester87 nah dog. gta.god of war.syphon filter.resistance.streets of rage.top 5.word up son
Just remaster 3. That’s the only one that would hold up anyway.
But would they release it with the servers back up for R2 and 3, I think they should because wouldn't that mean also it would work again for PS3 gamers??
I would just love it for its story because I didn't play R3
Oh the days when one could see the huge difference between PS2 and PS3. Resistance FoM was my first PS3 game, I played it so much I think I would've platinumed it if trophies existed at the time. I don't think it needs a remaster, it would be a basic shooter compared to what's out now. It was a big deal in its time because of the graphical showcase.
I'm honestly shocked by the positivity of this idea. These games were so mediocre...
@thefirst Burning Skies on Vita is OK. The story set up is good though the game lacks a bit of atmosphere. Main issues are the ridiculously easy difficulty and the graphics - though in fairness as far as I recall, Nihilistic didn't even have a dev kit or target specs for the Vita for a lot of the development time.
It's worth a play, and a pretty easy plat of that's your sort of thing.
@ILikeStake Really? I don't think they were mediocre at all. There were better games on the PS3, sure, but I found them fairly memorable.
@get2sammyb Yes, really. I mean, they really did nothing new besides look pretty (at the time), and that was just for console players, as PC players had seen those graphics for some time. The gameplay was just...boring. Though I remember kind of being ruined on other shooters for awhile back then because of Half Life 2.
I don’t know what it was but resistance multiplayer was the solidest multiplayer I ever played. I dont have the best Internet but never lagged never had connection issues nothing and I just remember that strongly about these games.
It might need a lot of re working because the game has aged worse than milk.
Only one I ever played was 3 but I remember thoroughly enjoying it. Would love to revisit the series if it does get a remaster!
@ILikeStake absolutely agree. It boggled me back in the days how much praise these were getting. I played all three of them at a friend's house and we found the story and gameplay seemed very uninspired. Then went to exchange it for Killzone 2 and 3 which was way more fun. But if fans should get a remaster I'm happy for them.
@thefirst Vita> Nephew
Of the three, I enjoyed the first one most of all. It was solid, the tone of the music, the gunplay, the colour pallete. R:FOM was the best game of the PS3 along with Uncharted.
Anyone remember Fuse?
No, i didn't think so.
That was Insomniac's Anthem
I've never played any of the Resistances, but just by going through the internet, reading the comments and reviews, the reception of the series seems to be pretty up and down. People's opinion swayed from either hating it or loving it. Were those games really that good? I ask also because like Killzone, it never seemed to have reached the status of the likes of Gears of War and Halo on Xbox as widely celebrated, staple FPS shooters.
No interest in remasters of the games but would like a new game in the franchise.
I loved playing the Fall of Men story campaign in coop with my friend. Man were we disappointed when we booted Resistance 2 for the first time only to realize, that the story campaign was not playable in coop.
I played them all but can't say I want to play them again really. They were ok games. Prefer more new R&C games really
they only need to remake resistance3, it had the best graphics, best story and you could coop it with a friend. its a stand alone story too, so very good for a restart of the series. the two first are too outdated and have not stood the test of time and is not very good games today.
RESISTANCE: Fall of Man...the first PS3 game to sell over 1 million copies WORLDWIDE! Further praised for the inception of online gaming/multiplayer. The (only) negatives it received were that the PS3's Console hardware wasn't able to run (showcase) it properly.
I vote 'YES' for RESISTANCE 4 and to incite interest in it...a limited edition 3 pack of the original games 1-3, with online access AND DLC (downloadable content) would be a bonus (not to mention get those older First Person Shooter fans) the reason to BUY a PS4 PLUS SUBSCRIPTION!
With the DOOM's franchises popularity, both gaming and the merchandise/collectibles, I would love a NECA/McFarlane 7 inch figure SGT. Hale/Chimera as well for an 'ULTIMATE EDITION' release to compliment my Game-Figure collection.
C'mon SONY, big bucks waiting there...👍😉🤑🤑🤑
