Sony has acquired Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games and added the famous studio to its portfolio of first-party teams. This will, unquestionably, strengthen the exclusive library of software on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, but speaking with Bloomberg, boss Shawn Layden has hinted that we may see more multiformat releases from the Japanese giant moving forwards.
“We must support the PlayStation platform – that is non-negotiable,” he said. “That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”
The executive was speaking largely about multiplayer titles, which is something that the platform holder has admitted it wants to make more of. The insinuation here, we assume, is that in order to compete with juggernauts like Fortnite, you need to release your titles everywhere. Are we tiptoeing towards a future without hardware borders?

Think they mean PC more than anything tbh.
So what, mirror Xbox and put your games on PC, Mobile and Switch?
Multiplayer games from Sony are always welcome. They have so great i.p. that are great multiplayer games.
"Are we tiptoeing towards a future without hardware borders?"
Reaching much?
What a stupid article.
This is not a surprise tbh. I think this hints that Dreams might be released elsewhere too (PC). It fits the description. And it’s the type of game that needs a wider audience for sure. I can see Sony launching a PS Store app on PC.
You just got to look at the very bleak gen the Xbox console has had to know that's a bad idea. It literally devalues your platform.
Why do you think the Switch is beating Xbox? It's not from power or sharing their games. Too many are now entering the multiplatform race and with companies like Google and Amazon now entering the fray the market will become oversaturated.
Stick to what works, don't follow the herd.
I don't think he multiplatform, at least not yet but more multiplayer games. Also he could be talking as in the far future where consoles may not be needed anymore so I don't think people should jump to conclusions.
This is good news. Multiplatform means more people get to enjoy those games.
If Mutiplayer Games is what he is Talking About Then They Should Reboot MAG And Socom
“Are we tiptoeing towards a future without hardware borders?"
Like it or loathe it, let’s face it - we are...
Just look at recent moves in the industry like cross platform play, Microsoft slowly going multi-platform and morphing into a software services company. I could imagine the next Xbox being their last. Just today they announced Ori on Switch after releasing Cuphead on Nintendo’s console not long ago.
Not to mention many previous “exclusive” titles ending up being released on other platforms. This seems the first step in Sony making very small steps in the same direction to me.
So what? Releasing multiplayer first party games on pc, when people there don't even have to pay for online play and have the other advantages?? This is like spitting your fanbase in the face, someone needs to fire this freaking idiot.
EDIT. sorry @Tasuki
I'm not sure that this will mean we'll see less total exclusives, but after mulling it over I can see this happening a bit more often. I think it can be a good thing for a multiplayer game because of how much a big and active playerbase means for titles like that. I'm sticking to my belief that there's still gonna be plenty of exclusives for a while yet. I'm not sure if that was ever in doubt.
@crimsontadpoles Playstation cannot exist without exclusive library, especially in the era of streaming. That's a matter of fact, because unlike Nintendo they are THE third party middleman and on pc third parties won't pay them a dime of their sales. Same with ps plus online tax.
So basicly what Xbox is doing putting all exclusives on PC guess theres no reason to buy a Ps5 then...
Please no. Don't go down the live service road further. It's not in your DNA, guys.
@KnightWolf Not All Games Mostly Mutiplayer Only Titles like They are Not Putting Games like God of War or Uncharted on PC
'The insinuation here, we assume, is that in order to compete with juggernauts like Fortnite, you need to release your titles everywhere.'
Not at all. I think he was talking about multiplayer games you find on PC
'Multiplayer titles DESIGNED to be played on PC'
@KnightWolf Seem like a classic Embrace, Extend and Extinguish Microsoft's play. Very sad the current Sony execs are so stupid to get baited with it.
@Areus So why we, they loyal comsumers who are buying their hardware, have to pay for playing online while pc people who didn't support their platform won't have to? This is wrong.

As usual people are jumping the gun before anything has been announced. If people seriously think Sony are going to stop doing exclusives, then sorry then your an idiot for thinking that. They've just bought Insomniac for goodness sakes!
Besides if they did start releasing games on PC it'll probably be on Epic to which the PC community won't like anyway.
@AdamNovice
I think pushsquare is misreporting here.
'Exclusive titles will still be a part of the company’s strategy, but that some games — particularly multiplayer titles designed to be played on personal computers — may see broader distribution.”
Actually suggest they maybe thinking of buying studios which develop games designed to be on PC.
Why can't Sony buy Kojima production ? Kojima love playstation more than Xbox
I think he meant genre, not multi-platform — that's not what multiformat means.
@KingSimba There are no hints at that at all. Stop spreading rumors.
@Callmegil Exactly.
@JJ2 They did that already with S.OE. Layden mentioned multiplayer games so it has nothing to do with putting their PS games on PC. Sony already has a mobile department which makes mobile games.
@snakemake Don't jump to conclusions. He said nothing about putting PS games on PC at all but S.O.E did exist at once. They could bring back a department like that, but I think it would be a waste of time.
@Dodoo That is M$ and has nothing to do with Sony. You will never see games like GOW or TLoU on other platforms, especially Nintendo or Xbox lol.
@KnightWolf Did he say that? No.
@AdamNovice Consoles will always be needed. People are reading into what he said too much and turning it into what they want. Shawn may retire next year so far off in the future has nothing to do with his comments.
A lot of people are just making stuff up and running with it lol. They just bought Insomniac and people are talking about them rekeasing their games on other platforms rofl. Multifotmat means genres.
"That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”
Keyword "wider install base", meaning multiplayer to be as popular as Fortnite on PS consoles.
Fortnite and other similar games bring in a ton of revenue through the PS store and they want more of it. Nothing about PC or ...ROFL...Switch and Xbox.
Context is everything.
Multiplayer games future is cross-play and available in everything (like fortnite) so I think it’s a good strategy to make the games for ps platform and pc. Single player games is always to be exclusive though since it will just be pirated on pc, or pc gamer will wait until it’s discounted at $5 at steam.
@ArmyofOne that is complete rubbish still spouting the weak online stuff in 2019 tell what you are about already.
I think Sony should keep its games on Playstation as well.
@GodGamer I’m not. Layden stated in the article that they must support the PlayStation platform, then he went on and said “but” some titles may need to go to a wider audience. They’ll continue supporting the PlayStation platform no doubt, but some titles may need to broaden up to a wider audience. I think it’s clear.
Subscription services make more money and are sustained revenue. If Sony sold their subs on PC and Xbox or even Stadia they will make more money. Everyone wants a piece of the pie.
