While the PlayStation 4 initially came with a 500GB hard drive upon its launch back in 2013 and the PS4 Pro doubled that to 1TB, the PlayStation 5 will sit in between the two. The next-gen console will have a custom 825GB solid-state hard drive.
What's important to note here is that SSDs are known to be far better than the standard hard drives of old. You might not be able to store quite as many games on your PS5 when compared to the current generation, but SSDs enhance elements such as load times. It remains to be seen whether or not the 825GB in question will actually be space available to the player to make use of or not.

8 games worth of hard drive- YES!!!
Ok, this is the first thing that's given me pause. 1TB should really be the bare minimum standard now.
@Deadhunter yeah I was expecting bigger tbh
@Deadhunter Absolutely, I've never understood why the designers skimp on hdd. It's a real block for gamers who buy lots of games, take a look at the store realise you have a full hdd and sack it off and focus on your backlog.
The larger “custom” SSD prices will be eye watering I reckon
“For the payers”
What a joke, should be 1TB at least.
I don’t like the sound of trying to work out which commercial NVME will fit into the slot internally. I preferred the Xbox is external slot.
Horrible, a couple games and the OS will fill that up in 15 minutes.
guessing MS did not add the OS to there drive Sony has so MS 1TB will not be available I'm guessing.
I think people should manage better what will be installed on their console. The PS4 hard drive was more than enough for me. I always installed what I was planning to play in a short term and deleted the games as soon as I was done with them. Playing less games simultaneously helps a lot.
That's terrible. I can't believe how small that is..... I hope games are smaller with that instant seek time and non-existent loading.
Didn't he say you can transfer the games about between an external and what's inside? It's all bit technical for me but I got the impression I could swap the data about. Having a 3TB external in my ps4 gives me hope I can seamlessly move them around. I'm no tech person though 🤔
That number is weird, but at least we can install our own m2 ssd rather than buying (likely more expensive) proprietary ssd like other console. The one thing I want to know is if using ssd on ps4 games on ps5 will gave us less loading time compared to using ssd on ps4.
@General_Spiller yeah they did say that best to keep all the PS4 games on there & transfer them over if you wanted or keep the SSD just for PS5 games up to you.
@Amusei it is the OS has taken some of it I'm guessing MS will be the same.
It's a bit sad that in this aspect it means I would be going backwards from this generation.
A 2tb hard drive for a PS4 at this point goes for about 65 Canadian dollars. Why Sony can't just eat a tiny cost to give people a little more storage and thus, more reason to buy digital games and fill it up, is beyond me. It's like a grocery store giving out baskets but refusing to give you a cart.
@themcnoisy Sony has a long, storied history of dicking around players for storage. Remember when they thought we would spend multiple hundreds of dollars on PS Vita cards, instead of just not buying games for it and letting it die?
For me both consoles are not great when you consider the size of games now and they will be even bigger with these new consoles being 4k
btw so am I right in thinking if you plug in a usb externall drive to store PS5 games on there will a performance difference between them and ones on the SSD
I'll be getting the add-on ssd
@Ryall Cerny already said they will test and recommend particular drives to get so this won’t even happen.
@Angelus3K He also said that because of the different way PC drives were configured they would need to be significantly faster than the PS5 is internal memory to work.
If someone could build a drive in the same way as the PS5 internal memory it might be slightly cheaper then using a PC drive that includes features not used.
You will absolutely have to check that list of approved drives before upgrading as if you just buy the cheapest without checking it almost certainly won’t work.
That seems rather low, it won't take me long to fill it up. And it's only going to get worse as games get bigger.
@Ryall that’s what I said! You won’t have to worry about which drive will fit and which will be compatible because Sony will issue a list of approved drives...
I dont even know what to do with 1TB anymore, I have 6TB on Pro now and it's just about right...
I will use my external 4 TB drive for storage and internal for current games I'm actually playing. And will transfer them between when needed. Simples 😅
Before you guys get upset with the 825 GB drive you have to remember that most storage on a disk rather than a solid state is programmed in layers, so you'll have the same mailbox object (like in the presentation) stored on the hard drive multiple times since it's easier to access when it's closer together for the level you're in.
With the capabilities of this SSD 825 GB is more than 1 TB HDD because they can store only one mail box one time... thus taking up less space.
Or at least that's how Sony is hoping developers will now program their games, in which it can pull resources from one place on the SSD rather than having to place that same object multiple times on an HDD to make sure it loads fast.
It's alright, not many people understand the technical jargon, but I'm excited as a PC gamer because it means I might finally see games programmed with the SSD in mind, and hopefully save some space on the hard drive.
Just wanted to add an edit: It's also why Nintendo can still make pretty big games on their small cartridges for the Switch since a lot of the data is solid state.
Yeah this is a big miss Sony. Here is a new SSD capable of rendering bigger more immersive worlds. Also its smaller.
I think its safe to assume game file sizes aren't going to shrink next gen...
Have Microsoft said how much memory is on their new console yet?
Unfortunately my experience from local game shop (where I have brigades during holidays) a huge majority of customers comes to buy Fifa game with words "It will be inside my console for whole year". It's just a drop in the sea, but if it is similar elsewere, than it is logical to put smaller/cheaper drive because it's enough for majority.
Is that 825GB the usable amount like the 861GB usable with my 1TB internal on my Pro? If not will the usable then only be about 675GB?
As a Nintendo Switch fan, I find it laughable as I say this but... THAT'S ALL?!
Even many high end current gen PS4 Pro titles push 80-100 GB or more! Next gen titles with extremely detailed graphics are going to be even bigger!
It's like they are pushing us to digital but keeping storage insufficient in order to start pushing us toward the steaming that none of us actually want.
825GB is such an odd number. Why not 1TB? With "AAA" game file sizes being so big nowadays 1TB should be the bare minimum.
@jess3a3 Actually seven games since pre-installed softwares and apps might already take up 100GB worth of space.lol
@NoCode23
Probably. I don't know any storage device that lets people use every bit of space.
Quite disappointed with this reveal. 1TB should be the standard in this day and age and even then, games on PS4 are easily pushing 100+gigs now.
PS5 games will likely push 100-150GB at launch and around 200-250 as time progresses. Thats less than 5 games at a time.
Sony needs to impress at the reveal event and charge a lower price than the XsX.
Hard to justify a higher price for weaker specs.
@vhsodre How do people get familiar with different games controller layouts, you can only play one game a time if you have normal muscle memory.
I just don't get why people latch onto one piece of information and then start ranting about it without looking at the whole picture.
The size of the SSD will have more comparable space due to the technology used within the system as a whole. Mark mentioned that due to some techniques used, an asset (in the example was a mailbox) was duplicated 400 times to speed up loading.
Couple this with the new Kraken compression tool, which gives on average 10% extra compression, if using a current PS4 title weighing in at 100Gb as an example, the compression tech alone would drop that to 90Gb.
Add in that fact that asset duplication is no longer required as it can be grabbed instantaneously as many times as required, only space for 1 copy of the asset is required, not 400.
So, straight away, if current games were built using this tech, the file sizes would be vastly different. What was also mentioned was that to mask from the player, the slow loading from a HDD, things like windy corridors or transition screens/effects were added, which will also be additional assets and these again, are no longer required.
Sometimes people fixating on one number (SSD size or T-Flops, for example) are blinkered to other details that have an influencing factor.
@ShaiHulud You're advancing from HDD to SSD, don't worry game size will not be as big a jump as compared to PS3-->PS4 at least initially.
@FTPinkRabbit Sony's using SSD which is costly.
@Pipsqweek Words from my mouth. Hear hear!
really not sure why this is an issue since it's an upgrade and a custom NVME M.2 SSD. Obviously games are gling to be managed differently and you still have the option to partition game elements, say, if you want the multiplayer you can chose to just download that, etc. Regardless of the wildly mismanaged expectations, this is still an upgrade over the ps4's 500GB HDD where the PS4 Pro later double that. Assuming Sony continue this trend, we could be looking at a potential 1,650 GB drive if they decide to release a iterative system that's definitely an improvement on the original. I mean, you might not even have to wait for that, depending on whether Sony let you upgrade the physical intwrnal drive (even upgrading to SSD) and/ or add external drive support, you could bump that to whatever you want theoretically, just like PS4 supoorted those two options. Sony clearly have the incentive to offer flexibility and options unlike xbox which is pretty much external or no access without voiding warranty by delving inside. Regardless, just delete and redownload games as an when you want them or once you're done. It's really quite simple and painless, especially if you have physical games. Besides, I remember the days of when you could only have one game at a time occupying the system memory aside from storage cards. People really just need to get over it and delete games they aren't playing. Gamers are so damn whiney this days! Grow some damn balls and get some common sense.
